Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Xianyin Village.
Lu Changxue had never imagined that she, a ghost, could be dragged along by a human until she wanted to throw up.
“Slow down! Slow down, I’m going to puke… Ugh…” Lu Changxue clung to a large locust tree and dry-heaved repeatedly.
“How can a ghost be such a wimp?” Zhou Benxin panted lightly, beads of sweat dripping from his forehead. His soaked T-shirt clung to his body, outlining his massive muscles.
Lu Changxue’s mouth twitched. Good thing she was already a ghost. If she were still alive, one punch from Zhou Benxin would have sent her straight to her own funeral.
The villagers kneeling all over the ground watched Zhou Benxin and Lu Changxue with strange expressions.
Fifth Elder Zhou stared fixedly at Lu Changxue. He could not see the overwhelming resentment surging around her. All he saw was her long black hair hanging over her face, obscuring her features.
“Fifth Elder, didn’t we already sacrifice that young woman? Who’s this one?” A middle-aged woman in a floral shirt felt chills crawling down her spine. Had Zhou Benxin brought back two young women?
“I don’t care who this extra outsider is. Drive them both out of here!” Fifth Elder Zhou slammed his cane against the ground, his gaze shifting to the burning incense and candles on the altar.
They had only burned down by a third. The ritual was not yet complete. He could not allow anyone to disrupt it.
Lu Changxue pointed at herself. “You want to drive me away? You made my Darling disappear, and now you want to kick me out? You’re really starting to piss this ghost off.”
As she spoke, several burly middle-aged women charged at her.
Lu Changxue neither dodged nor flinched. The women lunged straight through her body and stumbled into empty air.
Their faces instantly turned deathly pale, and they screamed, “She’s not human! She’s a ghost!”
“What are you afraid of? Even if she’s a ghost, she can’t disrupt the ritual! Hold them off until it’s over, and the Twin God will kill her!” Fifth Elder Zhou had clearly encountered ghosts before. Lu Changxue’s visible form did not frighten him in the slightest.
Zhou Benxin had already reached the altar, which had been constructed out of wood.
Possessing tremendous strength, he lashed out with a kick. One of the wooden supports beneath the altar cracked, and a fracture instantly spread across it.
Seeing that, Zhou Benxin raised his foot to kick it again. Several elderly men rushed forward and grabbed him from all sides, stopping him from doing any more damage.
“Put your backs into it! This brat’s too strong! Pin him down!”
Zhou Benxin’s entire body flushed red as he struggled with all his might, but one man could not fight off so many. They still forced him to the ground and gave him a vicious beating.
A man in his fifties snarled, “You’re from our village, yet you’re helping outsiders wreck the ritual!”
“Bullshit! This is feudal superstition! I’m answering the government’s call to stamp out superstitious practices, so what am I doing wrong? You were even willing to force my senior into a ghost marriage while she was still alive!”
After cursing them out, Zhou Benxin shouted at Lu Changxue, “Could you use your ghostly advantages to help me out here? They’re going to beat me to death!”
The men pinning him down froze for an instant before unleashing another merciless barrage of punches and kicks.
“We’re practicing feudal superstition, but asking a ghost for help somehow isn’t?” the man in his fifties cursed.
Lu Changxue floated over and swiped aside one middle-aged man after another, quickly freeing Zhou Benxin.
“Keep tearing down the altar. I’m about to unleash everything I’ve got.” The scarlet light in Lu Changxue’s eyes was almost tangible. If she did not see Yun Jianyue soon, the last of her sanity would collapse.
With that, an unprecedented torrent of resentment erupted from Lu Changxue, engulfing more than a hundred villagers.
Someone screamed.
“Li Qingqing is back!”
“Ah! Get away from me! I wasn’t the one who killed you! I wasn’t the one who made you become a bride, either! All I did was tie your hands! Go after Fifth Elder Zhou! This was all his idea!”
“Wan Min! I saw Wan Min!”
“Zhang Meng, don’t kill me! Please don’t kill me…”
The villagers descended into chaos, fleeing in every direction within the area shrouded in vengeful energy.
They saw the fears buried deepest in their hearts: the girls they had once dressed in red bridal gowns and sent to the altar as sacrifices.
As Zhou Benxin tore down the altar with all his might, he gave Lu Changxue a thumbs-up and shouted, “Holy shit, that’s amazing!”
He worked with the speed and ferocity of a husky demolishing a house.
Boom!
With a deafening crash, the altar abruptly collapsed.
The two burning candles were snuffed out amid the billowing dust.
Meanwhile, in the underground palace…
Overwhelming amounts of sinister energy converged into a massive python. Opening its foul-smelling maw, it hurtled toward Yun Jianyue at a speed that seemed to defy gravity.
With nowhere to dodge, Yun Jianyue could only raise her mini chainsaw, grit her teeth, and meet it head-on.
Just as the python came within half a meter of the chainsaw, something unexpected happened!
A powerful yet familiar suction force came from above Yun Jianyue’s head. Before she could even curse, she was sucked straight into a vortex.
The python lunged at empty air.
Mo Chen stared at the now-deserted hall, then lowered his gaze to the faintly flickering Red Thread of Fate around his wrist.
After a long silence, he slammed his fist into the stone chair. It instantly shattered into pieces and crumbled to dust.
Once he had calmed himself, Mo Chen hooked his index finger around the Red Thread of Fate and infused it with a wisp of Evil God’s Power. “Tell me. What is my bride’s name?”
The Red Thread of Fate immediately began to writhe, twisting above his wrist to form three large characters: Yun Jianyue.
Then it kept going, curling into an enormous heart before twisting the other end into another name: Mo Chen.
Mo Chen’s expression instantly darkened, his freshly subdued anger flaring back to life. Just where had this shameless Red Thread of Fate come from?!
He withdrew the wisp of Evil God’s Power. As though its soul had been pulled out, the Red Thread of Fate settled back into its usual faint, flickering state.
“Cough, cough… Where did all this dust come from?”
Yun Jianyue landed butt-first in the rubble. The enormous cloud of dust stung her eyes until tears streamed down her face and left her coughing uncontrollably.
Through the thick dust, Zhou Benxin charged in like a giant baboon. “Senior, are you okay?!”
He slung Yun Jianyue over his shoulder, completely oblivious to how miserable his sack-carrying technique made her feel, and sprinted away at top speed.
The bouncing left Yun Jianyue dizzy and disoriented. Honestly, she hadn’t felt this helpless even when her bargain husband had been choking her.
“Put me down…” Yun Jianyue wailed feebly.
Hearing the weakness in her voice, Zhou Benxin ran even faster, jostling her even harder. “Don’t be scared, Senior! We’re about to break through the encirclement!”
Yun Jianyue was still clutching the chainsaw in her right hand. With great effort, she raised it beside Zhou Benxin’s head and demanded in a voice that was both feeble and vicious, “Are you putting me down or not?”
The chainsaw buzzed menacingly, and Zhou Benxin immediately lowered her to the ground.
It wasn’t that he was afraid of the chainsaw. He was simply worried his senior couldn’t handle all that jostling.
Yes. That was definitely it.
Lu Changxue, who had been using vengeful energy to create the illusions, lit up when she saw Yun Jianyue. She rushed forward and pulled her into a tight hug. “Darling, thank goodness you’re okay!”
Bzzzz-
“What’s that sound?” Lu Changxue looked down and discovered the chainsaw in Yun Jianyue’s hand.
The next instant, the female ghost’s shrill scream rang across the entire sky.
“Where! The hell! Did you get! A chainsaw?!”
