Chapter 76
Chapter 76
With that, Bai Jie pulled back the half of her body sticking out from the bunk. “I’m going to sleep. You two should turn in early after you wash up. Sleep is precious around here.”
After hearing Bai Jie out, Yun Jianyue glanced at Zhang Ni’s bunk again.
She watched for several minutes before dragging Lu Changxue away to wash up.
The toilets and sinks were all outside and communal. The sinks were open-air, with only a crude shelter built over them, probably to keep people from getting drenched when it rained.
At this hour, no one else was washing up. There was only Yun Jianyue and Lu Changxue, one human and one ghost.
“Darling, we’re supposed to start entertaining clients on livestream tomorrow. I mean, sure, I want a man, but what I want is a hot guy, you know? So, any chance you can think of a way to get us assigned to scamming people instead?”
Lu Changxue carefully pried out her teeth, rinsed them under the tap one by one, then fitted them back into place one by one.
She had to admit, the body the Show-Off King had fixed up for her was seriously convenient. She could take it apart and put it back together, and it worked just as well as the original!
Yun Jianyue spoke around her toothbrush. “I’m working on it. If I actually end up entertaining clients on livestream, the Red Thread of Fate will probably go berserk and strangle me on the spot.”
Her Nominal Husband would sense the disturbance in the Red Thread of Fate and materialize out of thin air in a flash. Mission accomplished. Then she and Si Wuming would go back and face a disciplinary hearing together.
Actually, no. Considering how much the Paranormal Bureau treasured Si Wuming, she would probably be the only one getting chewed out.
“Have you come up with anything yet?” Lu Changxue asked.
Yun Jianyue turned to her with an exceptionally sweet smile.
Lu Changxue shuddered all over. “On second thought, maybe I should just go entertain the clients. That look on your face never means anything good.”
“You’re a ghost. Bewitching people and creating illusions should be basic skills for you, shouldn’t they?” Yun Jianyue was all smiles, but her attitude was perfectly clear. If Lu Changxue said no, Yun Jianyue would give her the mother of all slaps right then and there.
Yun Jianyue had nurtured Lu Changxue’s soul in the jade pendant for so long and even had people from the Paranormal Bureau teach her the Ghost Cultivation Technique. If Lu Changxue still couldn’t manage something like this, then this best friend of hers was a lost cause. She might as well resign herself to being an idiot for the rest of her afterlife.
As if Lu Changxue would dare say she couldn’t. She nodded frantically.
“Once you get into bed, leave your body lying there and slip out as a spirit. Visit a few of the men’s dorms and bewitch them into beating up Brother Dao first thing tomorrow morning.” Yun Jianyue finished speaking just as she finished washing up.
The human and ghost returned to the dorm. Yun Jianyue happily went to sleep, while Lu Changxue miserably left her body and went off to do hard labor in spirit form.
The people here had been beaten into submission. Many had already developed a deeply ingrained servility and didn’t dare resist at all, much less attack Brother Dao.
It took Lu Changxue an enormous amount of effort. She nearly exhausted all her ghostly power before finally finishing the job.
By the time Lu Changxue returned, Yun Jianyue had already lost count of how many dreams she’d had.
At five thirty in the morning, Yun Jianyue and Lu Changxue were sleeping soundly when someone kicked their bunk. The human and ghost shot upright.
Yun Jianyue instinctively looked toward the source of the noise and found that Bai Jie and the others had already gotten up and were briskly heading out to wash.
The group jostled noisily toward the door, with Zhang Ni bringing up the rear.
Lu Changxue climbed down from the top bunk and asked in a daze, “Who kicked the bed?”
“Golden Phoenix was worried we’d be late and get beaten.” Yun Jianyue stretched, climbed out of bed, grabbed her toiletries, and followed the crowd outside to wash up.
Once the human and ghost were done, they strolled leisurely toward the little bungalow from yesterday.
Everyone else was hurrying along, terrified of being late and getting beaten or punished. The two of them alone looked completely out of place.
The minutes ticked by, and soon it was almost six. Yun Jianyue and Lu Changxue remained utterly unconcerned.
Suddenly, a commotion broke out in the distance.
Someone shouted, “Brother Dao’s getting beaten up!”
Yun Jianyue and Lu Changxue exchanged a glance, then took off running toward the disturbance.
By the time the two of them arrived, Brother Dao, Brother Wolf, and the others were trapped in the middle of several dozen frail-looking men and taking a brutal beating.
“Quick, time for the beauties to save the big lugs! Their men will be here any minute!” Lu Changxue grabbed Yun Jianyue and charged toward the fray.
But Yun Jianyue didn’t rush in. She pulled Lu Changxue to a stop outside the crowd. “Here, shout after me.”
Lu Changxue stared at her. “Shout what?”
Clearing her throat, Yun Jianyue yelled at the top of her lungs, “Help~ Somebody come quick~ Brother Dao is getting beaten up~ Please stop hitting Brother Dao~ If you have to hit someone, come hit little old me instead~”
Lu Changxue gagged. “Ugh!”
“Hurry up and shout!”
To avoid being forced to entertain clients on livestream, Lu Changxue suppressed her disgust and roared at the top of her lungs, “Someone help! Brother Dao is getting beaten up! Hurry and save Brother Dao!”
The commotion quickly caught the attention of Brother Dao’s men. Several dozen thugs with multicolored hair came charging over, steel rods in hand.
Soon, more than a hundred people were embroiled in a chaotic brawl.
Taking advantage of the confusion, Yun Jianyue and Lu Changxue pushed their way into the crowd. When they spotted Brother Dao, whose face was black and blue, they each grabbed one of his arms and helped him up.
“Brother Dao~ Are you all right? You scared me half to death~” Yun Jianyue looked deeply concerned.
Lu Changxue followed her lead. “That’s right, Brother Dao. Are you okay? You scared poor Erfang half to death~”
Brother Dao took the hands of the human and the ghost and patted them. “You two did well. I owe you both today.”
He had been asleep in his room with a girl in his arms when some bastard kicked down his door, barged in, and started beating him. They had even dragged him outside to continue the beating.
The rioting workers were soon beaten into submission and forced to squat on the ground with their hands over their heads. The thugs surrounded them on all sides.
Brother Dao spat viciously on the ground. “So you pieces of shit are the ones who beat me?”
No one answered. Every one of them remained squatting in silence.
“Goddammit, who started this?” Brother Dao snatched a steel rod from a nearby thug and paced back and forth in front of the crowd, scrutinizing them repeatedly. But no matter how hard he looked, he couldn’t figure out who had led the riot.
Still, no one spoke.
Yun Jianyue stamped her foot and put on a cloying voice that sounded like she had phlegm stuck in her throat. “Who led the attack on our Brother Dao? How awful! Hurry up and step forward. Don’t drag everyone else into this~”
“Xiao Yun is right! Hand over the ringleader, and I might go easy on the rest of you.” When no one responded, Brother Dao flew into a rage and swung the steel rod into the head of the nearest worker.
“Bang!”
The worker’s head split open instantly. His body swayed several times, but he gritted his teeth and somehow stayed on his feet.
Brother Dao said impatiently, “Drag him away and process his organs.”
Two yellow-haired thugs immediately came over and hauled the man away.
Lu Changxue looked anxiously at Yun Jianyue. She had never intended for anyone to die. What were they supposed to do now?
Yun Jianyue gave her a reassuring look, then sidled up to Brother Dao. “Brother Dao, how do you process the organs? Do you dig them out and freeze them in a refrigerator?”
“Curious?” Brother Dao had a rather favorable impression of Yun Jianyue now.
“A little… Ah! I’m late! I still have work to do! Erfang, let’s go!” Yun Jianyue grabbed Lu Changxue and turned to leave.
After a moment’s thought, Brother Dao called out to them. “There’s no need to go to Ah Hong. Since you’re curious, you can follow them and see how the organs are processed.”
These two girls were determined to make money and seemed loyal enough. If he sent them straight to Ah Hong and had them show their faces in public, they would only end up as disposable pawns sooner or later.
He might as well test their nerve. If they had the stomach for it, he could always put them in more important positions.
The higher-ups were about to send someone over. If that person was coming to hold him accountable for the matter involving the man surnamed Gao, he could push these two pawns forward as scapegoats.
