Chapter 2
Chapter 2
“I’m kidding. Obviously, I’m not going to dismember anyone. I’m a good, law-abiding citizen,” Yun Jianyue said, flashing Lu Changxue a sweet smile.
Lu Changxue shrieked like a whistling kettle. “Put down the chainsaw before you say that! Wait, no! Where did you even get a chainsaw?!”
“I keep it at home in case of burglars.” Yun Jianyue set down the chainsaw and let out an ill-timed yawn. “I’m exhausted. Let’s go get your revenge, then come back and sleep.”
With that, Yun Jianyue headed outside.
Even after twelve years of friendship, Lu Changxue still couldn’t follow Yun Jianyue’s train of thought. Her body followed along instinctively anyway.
“We can’t call the police, but we can’t break the law either. How are we supposed to get revenge?” Lu Changxue asked.
Yun Jianyue looked at her as if she were an idiot. “Aren’t you a ghost? Is it against the law for you to kill someone?”
“Oh, right. I’m a vengeful ghost.” The realization came belatedly to Lu Changxue. When she saw Yun Jianyue heading for the fire stairs instead of the elevator, she couldn’t help asking, “We’re on the eighteenth floor. You’re not taking the elevator?”
“There are security cameras in the elevator.”
They were on their way to kill someone for revenge. To avoid trouble afterward, it was best not to let any cameras catch sight of them.
The scumbag’s name was Wang Hui, and he lived only three kilometers from Yun Jianyue’s home.
Yun Jianyue carefully followed routes without surveillance cameras, finally reaching Wang Hui’s apartment complex at four in the morning.
To avoid both the cameras and the security guards, she deliberately found a low wall and climbed over it.
Once they reached Wang Hui’s door, Yun Jianyue took out her phone and handed it to Lu Changxue. “Call him.”
“To let him know I’m here to kill him?” Lu Changxue asked, baffled.
“Idiot. Haven’t you seen how they do it in movies? The dead person calls the murderer and scares him half to death first, then appears in front of him and tortures him to death. What kind of vengeful ghost are you? How can you still be this sweet and naive?” After saying that, Yun Jianyue added, “Use SIM 2. It’s an unregistered SIM.”
What normal, law-abiding person kept an unregistered SIM in their phone for no reason?! Lu Changxue decisively entered the police emergency number, then slowly deleted it and called Wang Hui instead.
Before long, Wang Hui’s drowsy voice came through the receiver.
“Who is this?”
The moment she heard his voice, Lu Changxue’s expression turned vicious. Her eyes unconsciously flooded bloodred as she let out a cold laugh. “Wang Hui, how can you still sleep at night?”
Wang Hui immediately tensed on the other end of the call, every trace of drowsiness vanishing from his voice. “Who are you? Stop trying to scare me!”
“Why, I’m the girlfriend you dumped in the sewer, of course. Didn’t you cut me into pieces with a chainsaw? My head was the first thing you cut off. Do you remember?”
Lu Changxue’s voice grew increasingly sinister as bloody tears began streaming down her face. “It hurts so much, Wang Hui. Open the door. I’m standing right outside your apartment. I’ve come back for you.”
Even through the door, Yun Jianyue heard a scream, followed by the clatter of a phone hitting the floor.
At the same time, the call disconnected.
Lu Changxue’s pale fingers tightened, instantly crushing Yun Jianyue’s phone beyond repair. Yun Jianyue winced at the sight.
The next moment, Lu Changxue struck with full force, destroying Wang Hui’s front door with a single slap.
She strolled into the apartment and made her way to Wang Hui’s bedroom with practiced familiarity. She turned the handle, but the door had been locked from the inside and wouldn’t open.
“Why won’t you open the door, Wang Hui? Didn’t you love hitting me? I’m right here. Why won’t you come out?”
Lu Changxue dug her long nails into the door, leaving several deep gouges.
The door creaked under her claws, and Wang Hui’s shrill scream erupted from inside.
“I didn’t mean to beat you to death! You brought this on yourself! All I did was make the same mistake every man in the world makes. If you hadn’t blown it out of proportion, I never would’ve lost control and killed you!”
Click.
The moment Wang Hui finished speaking, Lu Changxue forced the lock open with her nails. She turned the handle, and the bedroom door swung open with ease.
Dim light spilled into the bedroom in widening beams as the door opened. At the farthest edge of the light sat Wang Hui, trembling uncontrollably.
Lu Changxue’s face was streaked with bloody tears. When she saw Wang Hui, she flashed him a sweet smile. “Oh, look at that. I made it inside.”
“Aahhh!”
A bloodcurdling scream pierced the long night.
Meanwhile, outside the residential complex…
Fang Lin’an stumbled out of a taxi on unsteady feet. He hiccupped drunkenly and staggered toward the complex.
After taking only a few steps, he suddenly looked up at the pitch-black fourth floor of Building C.
Such a powerful ghostly aura!
Only a vengeful ghost could radiate an aura this intense!
“Oh no!” Fang Lin’an’s drunken haze vanished in an instant. Cursing under his breath, he broke into a run toward Building C.
By the time Fang Lin’an reached 404 on the fourth floor, where the ghostly aura was strongest, he was panting heavily. Crouched outside the door was a petite girl in SpongeBob pajamas.
The girl was idly tracing circles on the floor, but she had chosen her spot perfectly, blocking the entire doorway. Anyone trying to enter or leave would have to get her to move first.
The door to 404 was firmly shut. It was unnaturally quiet inside, while the vengeful ghost’s resentment poured endlessly through the cracks around the door.
“Who are you? What’s going on in there?” Fang Lin’an demanded, too alarmed to soften his tone just because she was a girl.
Yun Jianyue slowly raised her head. Once she got a clear look at Fang Lin’an, she heaved a long sigh of relief. “You scared me to death. I thought you were the police.”
That was enough for Fang Lin’an to realize she knew exactly what was happening inside. He took a sharp step forward. “Move. I’m going in!”
“No. What are you going to do about it?” Yun Jianyue remained crouched, merely tilting her small face up at him.
“Then forgive me.” Gritting his teeth, Fang Lin’an reached out to pull her aside.
At that critical moment, a female ghost’s shrill voice rang out.
“Who gave you permission to touch her?!”
Before Lu Changxue had even finished speaking, she passed straight through the door and planted herself in front of Yun Jianyue. She was perfectly clean from head to toe. If not for the overwhelming resentment radiating from her, it would have been difficult to tell she was a ghost.
Despite the female ghost’s delicate features, her dense resentment still gave Fang Lin’an a fright. He cautiously backed away several steps and shifted his gaze to Yun Jianyue, who remained crouched in place.
After staring for quite some time, Fang Lin’an finally confirmed that the crouching girl was human, not a ghost.
“Strange. A vengeful ghost that’s still lucid and even knows to protect someone?” Fang Lin’an muttered, his brows knitting tightly together.
But he had no time to dwell on it. This vengeful ghost had a terrifying presence and was clearly dangerous. He had to defend himself and determine whether the person inside was safe.
Fang Lin’an reached into his pocket and swiftly pulled out two yellow-paper talismans inscribed with cinnabar. If the female ghost so much as twitched, he would set a Ghost-Suppressing Talisman ablaze!
Just as the tension reached its breaking point, Yun Jianyue said faintly, “Give me a hand. My legs are numb.”
Lu Changxue immediately exploded. “Are you an idiot? How did you manage to make your own legs go numb just from crouching?!”
Despite her words, Lu Changxue’s actions told a different story. She reached down, grabbed Yun Jianyue, and hauled her upright.
“What are you yelling at me for? My legs only went numb because I was guarding the door for you!” Yun Jianyue shot back without missing a beat.
Lu Changxue was so furious that her hair stood on end. “You were the one who said you’d bring me here for revenge, but I still had to go in by myself!”
Yun Jianyue looked as though this should have been obvious. “I’m human. If I kill someone, I’ll go to prison. All I could do was keep watch for you.”
Fang Lin’an stood to the side, utterly dumbfounded.
Could someone please tell him what was going on?
Why had the female ghost started arguing with her accomplice?
And why had all the resentment surrounding her vanished even though she was arguing so fiercely?!
