“I want to go to the Back Hill! I want to go to the Back Hill!”
Xia Huiqing’s voice was usually crisp and clear, but her shrieks were now unbearably piercing. It hardly even sounded like the voice was coming from her.
“Damn, did your cousin study dance or something? How the hell can she twist herself into something straight out of Parasyte?” Lu Changxue couldn’t help but quip.
Yun Jianyue was still reeling from how fast her cousin could scuttle around like some creature lurking in the shadows. In the blink of an eye, Xia Huiqing had already crawled out of the house.
The next instant, screams erupted from her aunt and the others in the courtyard.
Shit! Yun Jianyue cursed inwardly and hurriedly leaped out of the house.
Xia Huiqing was scuttling wildly around the courtyard, twisting and contorting as she shrieked like an alien invader from outer space.
Yun Luhua had never witnessed anything so horrifying. In the end, her maternal love overcame her fear, and she reached out with trembling hands to grab her daughter.
But Xia Huiqing had completely lost her senses. The moment she saw Yun Luhua approaching, she opened her mouth and tried to bite her!
“Watch out, Auntie!”
Yun Jianyue reacted quickly and yanked Yun Luhua back, narrowly saving her from Xia Huiqing’s iron jaws.
Before Yun Luhua could recover from the shock, Yun Jianyue kicked the crawling Xia Huiqing.
She was so strong that the kick sent Xia Huiqing rolling across the ground several times, covering her in dirt.
“You’re a little filthy, but I don’t mind. Cousin, your big sister is here to save you!”
Before Xia Huiqing could get back up, Yun Jianyue slammed another vicious kick into her.
Soon, she was pummeling Xia Huiqing with both fists and feet. Xia Huiqing curled up on the ground like a cooked shrimp under the assault, and a black hand slowly began to emerge from her body.
The instant the black hand appeared, Yun Jianyue stomped on it with flawless precision and brutal force. Trembling in pain, the hand immediately retreated inside.
“You still dare to hide? Get the hell out here!” Yun Jianyue beat her even harder.
“Motherfucker, stop hitting me!”
Black Shadow burst out of Xia Huiqing’s body in a fury. Floating in midair, it screamed itself hoarse.
Still curled up on the ground, Xia Huiqing slowly raised a hand and stared resentfully at Yun Jianyue. “Cousin, I don’t remember doing anything to you.”
“She doesn’t have a grudge against you! She was hitting me!” Black Shadow raged helplessly.
Xia Huiqing’s gaze slowly shifted toward Black Shadow. Her mouth fell open, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted.
She wasn’t the only one. The middle-aged and elderly women present all passed out in unison at the sight, as if they had planned it beforehand.
Fortunately, each of them had her own husband there. Only poor Xia Huiqing lay forgotten on the ground, with no one paying her any attention.
Ghostly energy radiated from Black Shadow. Its features were impossible to make out, and it looked like nothing more than a humanoid silhouette. One glance was enough to tell that it wasn’t very powerful.
“You’re not even as strong as my Darling, yet you dare come out and hurt people? You really have no idea how dangerous the world is, do you?”
Yun Jianyue reached into her bag and pulled out her chainsaw. With practiced ease, she revved it to life, flicked her tongue with a savage expression, and charged at Black Shadow with a roar.
You goddamn lunatic! Do you have any idea which one of us looks more like a ghost?!
Sensing danger, Black Shadow immediately tried to burrow back into Xia Huiqing’s body.
Unfortunately for it, Yun Jianyue was faster. She grabbed it by the back of the neck.
Before Black Shadow could react to being grabbed by the scruff, the world spun around it. Yun Jianyue slammed it to the ground and began slicing it to ribbons.
Yun Jianyue’s chainsaw technique was exquisite. Every pass shaved off a paper-thin layer of ghostly energy, making Black Shadow howl in agony.
“You dared possess my cousin? I’ve never seen a ghost so eager to die!” Yun Jianyue cursed as she continued carving Black Shadow apart with wild abandon.
In just ten short minutes, all that remained of Black Shadow was its head.
Imitating Si Wuming’s pretentious flair, Yun Jianyue planted one foot on Black Shadow’s head.
It dissolved into smoke and vanished.
“Woohoo! I’m amazing!” Yun Jianyue cheered herself on.
That was the scene that greeted the Paranormal Bureau agents when they arrived.
They turned complicated looks on the medium. “This is the malicious ghost you told us about? How did it end up getting its head blown off?”
The medium, who had rushed off to call for backup, stared at Yun Jianyue’s handiwork, her expression twisting.
That was a malicious ghost! A malicious ghost! A C-rank malicious ghost! How could anyone subdue it barehanded… Well, no. She had done it entirely with a chainsaw and one foot!
Yun Jianyue spotted the Paranormal Bureau badges on them and guessed who they were. She waved her chainsaw at them in a friendly manner and smiled. “Hi! Need me to cooperate with an interrogation? I’m very familiar with the process.”
Xu Tiangang, captain of the county branch of the Paranormal Bureau, darted forward and grabbed the hand that wasn’t holding the chainsaw. “Hello, I’m Xu Tiangang, captain of the county branch. Would you be interested in joining our team? It comes with an established government post, five social insurances, and a housing fund!”
Since his team had been assigned to a county, their overall strength was decidedly mediocre.
If they could recruit an expert capable of subduing a C-rank vengeful ghost barehanded… or rather, with just a chainsaw, their efficiency would skyrocket!
“An established government post, five social insurances, and a housing fund?!” Yun Jianyue immediately tossed the chainsaw aside and clasped Xu Tiangang’s hand in both of hers. “Could you tell me more about the compensation package?”
Xu Tiangang was just about to launch into an excited explanation when Yun Jianyue’s phone rang. She picked it up and checked the caller. Well, speak of the devil. It was Du Minghao.
She answered without hesitation, and she and Du Minghao spoke at the same time.
“How far have you gotten with your self-study?”
“The Paranormal Bureau offers established government posts?”
Alarm bells immediately went off in Du Minghao’s head. “How did you find out about that?”
Yun Jianyue put him on speaker. “Xu Tiangang told me. He invited me to join his team.”
“Old Du?” Hearing Du Minghao’s voice, Xu Tiangang finally realized Yun Jianyue knew someone from the City A Paranormal Bureau.
“Xu Tiangang, you bastard! How dare you poach someone from our city bureau?!” Du Minghao immediately started cursing when he heard Xu Tiangang.
“That’s right! And they’re offering me an amazing package!” Yun Jianyue fanned the flames with all her might.
Xu Tiangang was baffled. Hadn’t Du Minghao’s call interrupted him before he could even make an offer?
Du Minghao’s roar erupted from the other end of the line. “Don’t sign anything with Xu Tiangang! Come back to City A and sign with us! Our city bureau will definitely give you a better package than their county branch!”
Yun Jianyue replied, “Okay! It’s a deal, then.”
After hanging up, Du Minghao stared blankly ahead. Had he just been played?
Xu Tiangang, who had been used as a prop through the entire exchange, belatedly realized that Yun Jianyue had taken advantage of him. Overcome with grief and fury, he roared, “You’re coming back with me to give a statement!”
Yun Jianyue pointed at her family. “What about them?”
“They’re all coming too! Every last one of you has to sign a nondisclosure agreement!” Xu Tiangang’s attitude had taken a drastic turn for the worse, and he practically snarled every word.
Lu Changxue slowly poked half her ghostly head out of the jade pendant. “Do I have to sign a nondisclosure agreement too?”
The overwhelming aura of a vengeful ghost instantly flooded the entire courtyard. Xu Tiangang stared fixedly at Lu Changxue before letting out a shriek that tore through the sky.
“A-rank vengeful ghost! Lock down the area! Lock down the area!”
