Chapter 38
“Snip… snip…”
After several cuts, locks of Yun Jianyue’s ink-black hair rustled to the floor. The shoulder-length hair she had carefully grown out for more than half a year was instantly reduced to a bird’s nest.
Yun Jianyue fell silent. She stared at her severed hair for a long moment before finally asking, “Are you seriously insane?”
“An eye for an eye.” Mo Chen released Yun Jianyue, and the scissors vanished into thin air.
After speaking, he turned his gaze to Zhou Benxin. The corner of his mouth curved upward as if he had discovered something interesting.
The two humans and that low-level ghost couldn’t hear it, but he could hear it perfectly clearly.
The bones beneath the flesh of Zhou Benxin’s broken neck were slowly mending themselves!
The instant she regained her freedom, Yun Jianyue kicked at Mo Chen. Mo Chen snapped his fingers, freezing her in place.
He looked at Yun Jianyue with a slight frown. “If you keep acting up, this won’t be fun anymore.”
Yun Jianyue had just opened her mouth to speak when Mo Chen swiftly placed a Silencing Restriction on her.
Good thing he had acted quickly. Who knew what kind of abuse that deranged woman would have hurled at him otherwise?
With their strongest fighter, Yun Jianyue, subdued so effortlessly, Fang Lin’an didn’t dare make any reckless moves either.
As for Lu Changxue, she was still sprawled on the floor beneath the Evil God’s oppressive aura, on the verge of tears.
Seriously, what respectable ghost got pinned to the floor, unable to move a muscle?
Time passed little by little. Mo Chen sat on a stool like a lord presiding over his domain. He even conjured an entire tea set out of thin air and brewed himself a pot of tea.
Dawn soon broke, and the alarm Fang Lin’an had set for seven in the morning began to ring.
Mo Chen glanced at him. Fang Lin’an, as though facing a mortal enemy, hurriedly silenced the alarm before shrinking into the corner and making himself as inconspicuous as possible.
He secretly opened his chat with Si Wuming. When he saw that there was still no reply, despair washed over him.
Junior Martial Uncle, if you don’t get here soon, we’re all going to die! Fang Lin’an roared inwardly, though outwardly he didn’t dare show the slightest dissatisfaction with Mo Chen.
Just then, Daoist Chu came rushing into the courtyard in a panic. His voice reached the room before he could even knock.
“Disaster! Young friends, Young Friend Zhou’s body is gone!”
The door wasn’t locked. The moment Daoist Chu finished shouting, he shoved it open and barged inside.
For a moment, the scene was so absurd it was almost comical.
Mo Chen was leisurely sipping tea. Yun Jianyue stood perfectly still in midattack. Lu Changxue looked as if she had been glued to the floor with 502 superglue. Fang Lin’an was trembling in a corner. And Zhou Benxin lay on the bed, deathly pale and unmistakably dead.
As for Daoist Chu, he stared at the Great Evil God and A-rank malicious ghost who had suddenly appeared in the guest room, wondering if he was still asleep.
He stood frozen for a moment, then silently backed out of the room and thoughtfully closed the door behind him.
“I must’ve gotten up too quickly. I actually saw an Evil God and a malicious ghost. How could such evil entities possibly appear in my esteemed Chongguang Mountain Daoist Temple?”
Daoist Chu took a deep breath and pushed the door open again.
The exact same scene greeted him.
Mo Chen finally deigned to move his noble neck, tilting his head slightly toward Daoist Chu. “What do you want?”
Daoist Chu already had one hand on the peachwood sword at his waist, but the instant his gaze met Mo Chen’s unfathomable eyes, he froze.
Nearly sixty-year-old Daoist Chu put on an awkward smile he hadn’t worn in decades. “Might I ask what brings an esteemed immortal such as yourself here?”
Fang Lin’an looked up at the heavens in speechless despair. He had thought Martial Uncle Chu would at least fare better than him, but they were exactly the same.
“If you have no business here, get lost,” Mo Chen said coldly.
“Sure thing. I’m getting lost right now.” Daoist Chu promptly made himself scarce, sprinting away at a speed that could rival an Olympic athlete.
Silence returned to the room. Soon, more than another hour had passed.
In the quiet room, Zhou Benxin suddenly bolted upright in bed, gasping for breath.
Still shaken, he looked around at everyone in the room. The moment he saw Mo Chen, he recoiled in horror until his back hit the wall and he had nowhere left to retreat.
Fang Lin’an’s eyes widened. For the moment, he even forgot about the crushing pressure radiating from Mo Chen. “You’re alive!”
“It only took six hours this time,” Mo Chen mused.
By his calculations, Zhou Benxin’s first resurrection had taken eight hours.
Was the time required for him to resurrect getting shorter with every death? Would it eventually reach the point where Zhou Benxin could revive instantly after being killed?
As though he had discovered some fascinating new specimen, Mo Chen actually deigned to walk over to Zhou Benxin’s bedside.
“W-What are you trying to do? Senior Yun…” Zhou Benxin instinctively turned to Yun Jianyue for help, only to discover that she had been immobilized.
“If your body were completely destroyed, would you still be able to resurrect?” Mo Chen asked, seemingly to himself.
Zhou Benxin froze in confusion. The next instant, his head exploded.
A deafening blast erupted with a spray of blood. Red and white matter splattered across the walls and bed, some of it even landing on Fang Lin’an.
His scream lodged in his throat. Pale and trembling from head to toe, Fang Lin’an stared at Mo Chen.
Why did a monster like this exist in the world?!
Yun Jianyue’s eyes practically blazed with fury. She wanted nothing more than to hack Mo Chen apart until even his soul ceased to exist.
But she was too weak.
How could she be this weak?
The realization infuriated Yun Jianyue, and her desire to become stronger reached its peak at that moment.
This time, Zhou Benxin regenerated even faster.
With such an obvious injury, everyone could clearly see the entire process of his head growing back bit by bit.
When the final layer of hair had finished growing, Zhou Benxin’s eyes flew open once more. Like a fish on the verge of death, he gulped down great lungfuls of air.
This time, it had taken less than five hours.
Realizing he had come back to life again, Zhou Benxin looked at Mo Chen in terror and forced a smile uglier than a sob. “B-Brother-in-law, you’re not going to kill me again, are you?”
Every time he died, it felt as though all the vitality had been drained from his body. He might be able to resurrect, but in his current state, he was worse off than a dying patient in the ICU.
Mo Chen studied Zhou Benxin thoughtfully. “If only one finger remained, would you still be able to resurrect?”
Realizing what Mo Chen intended to do, Zhou Benxin nearly fainted. What the hell was wrong with this man?! How could any normal person come up with something so vicious?!
Mo Chen raised a hand, about to snap his fingers.
At that critical moment, Yun Jianyue somehow broke through the restraint and kicked Mo Chen squarely in the back.
The tremendous impact sent Mo Chen stumbling. The communal bed was right in front of him, and Yun Jianyue’s kick sent him sprawling inelegantly across it, his face landing less than four inches from Zhou Benxin’s feet.
“Aaaah! Senior Yun, what are you doing?!” Despite being a burly 1.8-meter-tall man, Zhou Benxin looked small, pitiful, and helpless as he frantically curled into a ball, wanting nothing to do with Mo Chen.
Yun Jianyue’s voice was slightly hoarse. “Damn. Didn’t notice.”
With that, she grabbed Mo Chen by the ankle and flung him off the bed onto the floor.
Yun Jianyue glared down at Mo Chen, planted a foot on his chest, and snarled through gritted teeth, “You stupid piece of sh*t. What else are you planning to do?”
