Chapter 99

After she and her daughter had been rescued, Wang Xianyin had been drowning in the agony of her husband’s death and his supposed betrayal. She had never asked the police about the details of the case. Her parents had handled all the follow-up matters, and she had not even attended her husband’s burial. Because of that, she had no idea how her husband had actually died.

The phone rang for more than ten seconds before the call connected.

As soon as it did, Wang Xianyin hurriedly said, “Officer Tan, this is Wang Xianyin, the victim from the kidnapping case in the west of the city three months ago.

“Is this a good time? I want to ask you something about my husband.”

“It is,” came the voice of a middle-aged officer from the other end. “Go ahead and ask whatever you want.”

“I want to know… how did my husband die back then?”

On the other end of the line, the middle-aged officer sighed and said with deep regret, “That day, he died protecting your mother from a knife.

“When he heard that something had happened to you and your daughter, he was frantic. He nearly broke down crying right there, but he still forced himself to stay calm and cooperate with the police rescue.

“We were already about to get you out. But then, at the very last step, something still went wrong…”

After listening to the officer finish, Wang Xianyin’s mind went blank for an instant. The phone slipped from her hand and fell to the floor.

Her eyes widened in disbelief. Tears streamed down her face, and she covered her mouth, sobbing so hard she could not speak.

She had never imagined that her own mother would lie to her.

So her husband had not abandoned her and their child.

So her husband had died saving her mother.

Her husband had given his life for her family, yet in the end, she had not even gone to his funeral. For the past few months, she had hated him all this time.

If her husband really had been staying by her and their child’s side in the form of a soul, how heartbroken must he have been when he saw her hatred for him?

The people he had protected with his life had ended up hating him so much.

Seeing her mother suddenly burst into tears for reasons she did not understand, Nannan hugged her tightly again, trying to comfort her.

Wang Xianyin cried for a long while before she finally managed to pull herself together. She looked up at Xia Sheng.

“Little Celestial Master, can you let me see my husband again? I miss him so much…”

Xia Sheng nodded and opened the heavenly eye for both mother and daughter.

Wang Xianyin only felt a cool sensation between her brows. Then she noticed a familiar figure standing beside her.

She turned her head tentatively. The moment she saw her husband’s paper-pale face, her tears fell again despite herself.

“Ah Huai…”

Jiang Huai had been following beside the mother and daughter all along, so naturally, he had heard everything Xia Sheng said.

Now that his wife could finally see him, Jiang Huai’s eyes also reddened slightly at the corners. “Yinyin…”

Hearing that familiar voice, Wang Xianyin cried even harder. She reached out, wanting to hold him, only for her hand to pass straight through his body. She could not touch him at all.

“I’m sorry, Ah Huai. I’m sorry. I misunderstood you…” Wang Xianyin sobbed until she could barely breathe. Nannan’s eyes reddened too, and she clung to her mother’s leg, crying.

Watching the family weep bitterly, Xia Sheng sighed. She cast a spell on Jiang Huai and said, “I’ve helped him take on a physical form, but he can only maintain this state for two days.

“After two days, I’ll send him on to reincarnate. Use these two days to say a proper goodbye.”

Hearing this, Wang Xianyin was overwhelmed with gratitude. She nodded through her tears. “All right. Thank you, Little Celestial Master.”
With that, Wang Xianyin threw her arms around her husband, overcome with emotion, and poured out all the guilt she had been carrying all this time.

Auntie Wang and Fang Rong stood off to the side, watching the family of three reunite, and couldn’t help shedding tears as well.

Auntie Wang asked Xia Sheng, “Little Celestial Master, do you know why Xianyin’s mother lied to her?

“Jiang Huai saved her life, and this is how she repaid him-by deceiving her own daughter. She’s worse than a beast!”

By the end, Auntie Wang was so worked up that her voice had risen.

Xia Sheng explained, “She was probably afraid that once Wang Xianyin found out Jiang Huai died saving her, Xianyin would cut ties with her as a mother. That’s why she chose to lie.”

After all, if Wang Xianyin’s mother hadn’t acted on impulse, taking the money to meet the kidnappers and disrupting the rescue plan, Jiang Huai would not have lost his life.

“Even so, she had no right to tell a lie like that!” Auntie Wang fumed. “I have to get justice for Jiang Huai. I can’t let everyone else think he was some scumbag who abandoned his wife and daughter!”

Xia Sheng did not stop Auntie Wang.

She believed that with Auntie Wang’s combat power, she would absolutely make life difficult for Wang Xianyin’s parents.

With the matter temporarily settled, Xia Sheng did not linger. She left the villa together with Fang Rong.

Thinking back on everything that had just happened, Fang Rong could not help sighing. “If Wang Xianyin’s mother hadn’t made that impulsive mistake, this family wouldn’t have been separated between life and death.

“But Wang Xianyin’s mother only acted that way because she was worried about her daughter. Who could have imagined her good intentions would end up causing such a terrible outcome?

“I really don’t even know who to blame for this.”

Xia Sheng said, “The affairs of this world are never simply black and white. Some knots can’t be cut apart, and the more you try to untangle them, the more tangled they become.”

Wang Xianyin’s mother was still her mother, after all. In the future, Wang Xianyin would cut off contact with the Wang family, but she surely would not be able to bring herself to avenge her husband by killing her own mother.

This matter could only end here.

It was Jiang Huai who was truly pitiful. He had been so young, yet was forever separated from his wife and daughter.

If Auntie Wang went over and made a scene at Wang Xianyin’s mother’s place, it could at least help Jiang Huai vent some of his resentment.

Wang Xianyin was currently with her husband, and in the moment, she had forgotten to send Xia Sheng and the others home.

Xia Sheng took out her phone and called a ride online.

Just as she finished booking it, a pair of headlights lit up not far away.

The light shone straight into their eyes, making it impossible to see the license plate clearly.

Fang Rong vaguely felt that the car looked familiar.

It was not until the black BMW stopped in front of them that Fang Rong’s face went pale. She recognized it as Xia Yanzhi’s car.

Having wasted so many years of the first half of her life in the Xia Family, Fang Rong’s instinctive reaction upon seeing this car was to step back.

But then she remembered that her daughter was right beside her. She steadied herself and stood firmly at Xia Sheng’s side, not retreating even half a step.

A mother grew strong for her child.

Even if only for her daughter’s sake, she could no longer be as weak as she had been before, allowing others to trample and humiliate her at will.

The BMW’s window rolled down, revealing Yu He’s arrogant face.

“Well, well. If it isn’t Xia Sheng. What are you doing out here in the middle of the night? Stealing money, or stealing men?”

Xia Sheng ignored Yu He’s words. But Auntie Wang, with her fiery temper, could not stand to hear anyone belittle Xia Sheng, and she immediately spoke up. “Whose dog is barking from inside a car this late at night? You’re making my ears ring.”

Yu He’s expression changed slightly at Auntie Wang’s words. “You shrew! Who are you calling a dog? You’d better apologize to me right now! Otherwise, don’t blame me for calling someone to teach you a lesson!”

Auntie Wang rolled her eyes. “Oh, I’m so scared.

“Fine, it was Mommy’s fault. Mommy will apologize to you, all right?”
