Chapter 105
Chapter 105
Xia Sheng turned back in confusion and saw Shen Yanchen’s face dark with displeasure. “You’re not allowed to go.”
Xia Sheng was a little unhappy. “I can’t stay here, and I can’t go there. So where am I supposed to sleep tonight?”
Shen Yanchen took a deep breath and finally relented. “Stay here. I’ll have Nanny Wang prepare a guest room for you.”
With that, Shen Yanchen got up and went out to find Nanny Wang.
But Xia Sheng didn’t really want to sleep in the guest room.
If she slept there, she wouldn’t be able to stay close to Shen Yanchen, much less absorb the Baleful Qi on him.
After hesitating for a moment, Xia Sheng decided to act first and explain later. She went into the walk-in closet, found one of Shen Yanchen’s shirts, and after showering and changing into it, climbed into bed.
By the time Shen Yanchen came back after making arrangements, Xia Sheng was already fast asleep on the bed.
He couldn’t help feeling a little helpless at the sight.
His little girl seemed to understand everything, yet also nothing at all.
She clearly knew quite a lot about matters between men and women, yet she had no guard up around him whatsoever.
Did she really think that he, a normal adult man, could restrain himself from feeling any kind of impulse toward the person he liked?
She trusted him a little too much.
Shen Yanchen’s gaze fell on the pair of smooth, jade-white legs exposed beneath the hem of the shirt. His Adam’s apple bobbed. He walked over, pulled the thin summer blanket over her, and only then went into the bathroom to wash up.
When he came out of the shower, the blanket he had tucked over Xia Sheng had already been kicked aside because she found it too hot.
Shen Yanchen chuckled. He got into bed and pulled the blanket back over her.
But the moment he did, Xia Sheng kicked it off again.
Shen Yanchen was endlessly patient with her.
He reached out to pull the blanket over her once more.
But just as he turned onto his side, Xia Sheng naturally rolled over and straight into his arms, wrapping herself tightly around him.
The soft feel of the girl in his embrace made his whole body tense, and the desire he had only just suppressed surged up again.
He tried to push her away, but she clung to him stubbornly and refused to let go.
Left with no choice, Shen Yanchen could only suppress the agitation in his heart and go to sleep holding her like that.
Elsewhere.
Song Huaiming had been out entertaining late. By the time he returned home from Yudu Club, it was already eleven at night.
At this hour, plenty of people were already asleep, yet his house was still brightly lit.
Before he even stepped inside, he heard a baby’s crying coming from the second floor.
The villa district was especially quiet at night, and the crying was so loud it sounded like it might lift the roof off.
Fortunately, the villas here all had yards, and there was some distance between each house. Even if a child cried and fussed, it wouldn’t disturb the neighbors. Otherwise, with his child crying like this for nearly half a year now, the neighbors would have shown up to complain long ago.
Song Huaiming had drunk quite a bit tonight, and his head had already been aching. Now, with the child crying nonstop, he felt even more irritated.
Still, he had always been a steady-tempered man. Though displeased, he managed to keep his emotions in check.
As soon as he walked into the living room, he saw his wife sitting on the sofa, rubbing her brow with a weary expression.
He took off his suit jacket, walked behind her, and gently pressed his fingers to her temples, massaging them for her.
“Is the baby nurse upstairs with the baby?”
Mrs. Song nodded and leaned against her husband, exhaustion filling her eyes. “I spent more than an hour trying to soothe the baby, but he just kept crying on and off. I really couldn’t take it anymore, so I came downstairs.”
Who would have thought that even downstairs, the baby’s crying would still be this loud?
“You’ve worked hard,” Song Huaiming said, kissing her on the forehead.
“It’s fine. The baby is mostly being looked after by the confinement nanny anyway. I just come back to nurse him and help out once in a while,” Mrs. Song said as she stood up and took the coat Song Huaiming had taken off. “It’s getting late, and you still have work tomorrow morning. Go upstairs, wash up, and get some rest first.”
Listening to the crying from upstairs, Song Huaiming forced out a joke, trying to make light of it. “You sure you’ll be able to sleep?”
Mrs. Song gave a bitter smile. “Even if I can’t sleep, I still have to try. My sleep’s been terrible lately, and I keep zoning out at work. I’ve already been scolded by my senior several times.
“In another month, I’ll finally be able to officially take the lead on some minor surgeries. But in the state I’m in now, I’m honestly scared something will go wrong once I really do.
“But if I miss this opportunity, I’ll probably have to wait another few years. So I can only grit my teeth and push through.”
When his wife brought up officially taking the lead in surgery, Song Huaiming thought of the Little Celestial Master he had met outside Yudu Club.
That Little Celestial Master had said that if his wife stayed in her current condition, someone would die once she got onto the operating table.
He hadn’t really believed it at first. After all, his wife was still only assisting the lead surgeons at the hospital.
Who would have thought that the moment he got home, she would say she was about to officially move up?
Was it just a coincidence?
Or did that young girl really have some ability after all?
Song Huaiming was full of doubts. Then he remembered that Xia Sheng had given him an Infant Pacifying Talisman, so he took his suit jacket back from his wife and searched through it, only to find that the Talisman Paper and business card were still inside.
After taking the business card and Talisman Paper, he had originally planned to toss them away when he got the chance.
But he had been busy socializing tonight, and on top of that he had drunk a little. As time passed, he forgot all about it, so the items never got thrown out.
After hesitating for a moment, he decided to try placing it in the baby’s crib.
If it didn’t work, then he’d just treat it as having met a little fraud.
If it did work, then he’d have struck gold.
When Mrs. Song saw her husband pull a sheet of Talisman Paper from his pocket, she couldn’t help frowning. “Why did you bring something like that home?”
Mrs. Song was a top medical student from a prestigious university. She had believed in science since childhood and had always looked down on superstitious nonsense involving ghosts and spirits.
Recently, there had been some problems with the hotel her husband ran, and when he said he wanted to go ask some kind of master for help, she had already been displeased. In her eyes, he was just handing money to con artists for nothing.
Now that she saw he had even brought Talisman Paper into the house, she naturally felt even more unhappy.
Song Huaiming explained, “This is an Infant Pacifying Talisman. A…”
He paused to think about how to address Xia Sheng before continuing, “A Little Celestial Master gave it to me. She said if we put this in the baby’s crib, it would calm the child and keep him from crying or fussing.”
“How much did you pay for it?” The moment Mrs. Song heard that it had come from a fortune-teller, her first reaction was that her husband had been scammed.
Song Huaiming said, “She didn’t ask me for any money.”
Mrs. Song frowned even more deeply. “This isn’t some kind of curse, is it?”
She didn’t believe in gods or ghosts, but if someone really was cursing her child, there was no way she could feel at ease about it.
“Probably not. Let’s just try it first. There’s nothing to lose anyway.”
After thinking it over, Mrs. Song agreed and didn’t stop him. The two of them went upstairs together and placed the Talisman Paper under the cradle bedding.
To their astonishment, the moment the Talisman Paper was set down, the little one in the cradle suddenly stopped crying. He even looked at them with a cheerful grin.
