Chapter 86
Chapter 86
At this point, Father Wu no longer had the energy to argue with Ning Xi over any of that. He could only keep begging Xia Sheng to help him.
Xia Sheng said, “It’s not impossible to get rid of the Ghost Bridegroom.”
At that, Father Wu and Mother Wu’s eyes lit up.
Mother Wu hurriedly asked, “What method? Little Immortal, as long as you’re willing to help us, I’ll pay however much you want! Even if we have to serve you like oxen and horses, we’ll repay your kindness!”
Xia Sheng said, “Breaking the engagement is actually very simple. As long as the engagement to the Ghost Bridegroom is transferred to your son, the two of you will be free.”
The moment Xia Sheng said the engagement had to be transferred to their son, Father Wu and Mother Wu’s expressions changed.
Mother Wu cried out, “No! We only have this one son! We’re still counting on him to carry on the Wu family line. How can we let him go with that Ghost Bridegroom?!”
After shouting in agitation, she added, “Little Immortal, how about this? Since the engagement can be transferred, help us transfer it back to Wu Zhaodi.
“However much Wu Zhaodi paid you before to handle this, we’re willing to pay double-no, ten times the price! As long as you’re willing to help us, we’ll pay ten times whatever Wu Zhaodi paid you!”
Ning Xi couldn’t help spitting in disgust. “Even at a time like this, you’re still thinking of ruining your own daughter! I really don’t know how people like you can call yourselves parents!”
Mother Wu said coldly, “Daughters are money-losing goods to begin with. Only sons can support us in our old age!”
“Money-losing goods?” Ning Xi sneered. “Sheng’er is a girl too. Are you saying she’s money-losing goods as well?”
Mother Wu didn’t dare offend Xia Sheng right now, so of course she could not admit it. She quickly said, “I’m not saying all girls are money-losing goods. I’m only talking about our Zhaodi. Little Immortal, please don’t misunderstand!”
Xia Sheng ignored her words and simply said, “The engagement was transferred from Wu Zhaodi. Now there is no way to transfer it back.
“Make your own choice. Either the Ghost Bridegroom takes the two of you away, or he takes your son away.”
After she gave them the choice, before Father Wu and Mother Wu could speak, Younger Brother Wu said, “I’m only twenty-three this year. I haven’t even gotten married yet, and I haven’t enjoyed many good days. How can you let that Ghost Bridegroom take me away?
“Dad, Mom, you’re both already in your fifties. In a few more years, who knows, your bodies might be full of illnesses. Then we’ll have to spend money on doctors. You might as well just go with the Ghost Bridegroom now. That way, you won’t have to suffer while you’re alive later.”
Perhaps they had never imagined their son would say something like that. Father Wu and Mother Wu’s roles instantly changed, and they stared at him in disbelief.
Heartbroken, Father Wu said, “What did you just say? Your mother and I raised you all these years. We even traded your sister away for betrothal gifts so we could buy you a car and a house.
“Now that something has happened, never mind that you aren’t thinking of helping us-you actually want to hand our lives over to the Ghost Bridegroom?!”
“I’m considering what’s best for you too,” Younger Brother Wu said, completely self-righteous. “After all, you’re already this old. Right now it’s only high blood pressure, but in a few years, heart disease, diabetes, cancer-who knows what illnesses might come knocking?
“If I have to support both of you by myself, I probably won’t even be able to afford your medical bills then. Since you love me, why not contribute your final bit of value and trade it for a lifetime of peace and success for me? Isn’t that good?”
Hearing Younger Brother Wu’s selfish words, Mother Wu trembled with rage. “You, you, you unfilial wretch! People say you raise a son to support you in old age. We raised you all these years, and this is how you repay us?!”
Younger Brother Wu said, “What do you mean, raise me? The money I’ve been spending has always been my sister’s. She started working part-time in high school to earn money for me. You only raised me for a dozen years or so. It’s not that big a deal. What else do you want me to do to repay you?”
Father Wu and Mother Wu were so furious at his words that they nearly fainted on the spot.
Mother Wu gritted her teeth and hissed, “You unfilial wretch! How did I give birth to a bastard like you?”
“Didn’t I turn out this way because you spoiled me? How can you blame me? If you want to blame someone, blame yourselves for giving birth to me and then raising me into this.”
As Younger Brother Wu spoke, he clearly couldn’t be bothered with the old couple anymore. “My buddies asked me to play cards, so I’m leaving. You two can sort out your own problems with this woman.”
With that, he turned to Xia Sheng again. “I’ll leave these two old people to you. If there’s any trouble, just go to them. Don’t pin the Ghost Bridegroom thing on me. Arranging a Ghost Marriage wasn’t my idea.”
After saying that, he actually hailed a taxi and left, abandoning Father Wu and Mother Wu right there.
Ning Xi couldn’t help roasting him. “Arranging a Ghost Marriage may not have been his idea, but he enjoyed all the benefits in the end. Even after he found out, he didn’t return the betrothal money. How does he have the nerve to say it has nothing to do with him?”
Seeing that her son had really just left like that, Mother Wu was so angry that she fainted on the spot.
Father Wu wanted to chase after his son, but he was in a wheelchair now and couldn’t get up at all. All he could do was watch helplessly as his son disappeared into the distance.
Then he turned back to plead with Xia Sheng, wanting her help.
But Xia Sheng ignored him too. She called Ning Xi over and left.
Once they were upstairs, Ning Xi looked out the window and saw the old Wu couple being taken away by an ambulance. She couldn’t help sighing. “Pitiful people always have something hateful about them. I bet those two never imagined that what started as a business of selling their daughter would end up selling themselves instead.”
After saying that, she turned to Xia Sheng. “Sheng’er, will those two really die?”
“No,” Xia Sheng said calmly. “The Ghost Bridegroom can enter their dreams now. Even if he doesn’t kill them, he can still enjoy himself with them and cultivate into a Ghost Immortal.”
It took Ning Xi a few seconds to understand what Xia Sheng meant. “You mean those two old people are going to be slept with by the Ghost Bridegroom for the rest of their lives?”
Xia Sheng nodded.
Ning Xi clicked her tongue twice. “That is way too miserable.”
If it were her, she would rather just die and be done with it.
“Then what about their son? He leeched off Wu Zhaodi for so many years. Are you just letting him go?”
“Karma runs in cycles. The heavens will deal with evil people,” Xia Sheng said slowly. “Their son has always relied on his parents and sister to support him. Now that he can’t rely on either side anymore, he won’t be able to survive on his own for long.
“In a few months, he’ll squander all the money he has, then sell the house to pay off his gambling debts.
“After that, someone will lead him astray, and he’ll get involved in selling drugs. It won’t be long before he’s arrested.”
After hearing Xia Sheng’s words, Ning Xi felt much more at ease.
When Xia Sheng said earlier that Wu Zhaodi’s younger brother would still rack up gambling debts in the future, she had worried that Wu Zhaodi might get dragged into it.
But since he was going to end up in prison, there shouldn’t be any major problem.
