Chapter 94
Chapter 94
I want to tell a little story.
In the south, there was a city called Songtan. In Songtan, there was a small company. Its legal representative was Zhao Kai, and its general manager was Wen Tianxue.
Wen Tianxue had that cool-toned fair skin, her face so smooth and tender you couldn’t find a single pore.
Her eyes were huge, her lashes curled like a doll’s. Don’t ask whether she was born with them or had a little work done… In any case, she was the very picture of a Jiangnan beauty.
Zhao Kai and Wen Tianxue were husband and wife.
But both had been married before, and Zhao Kai was eleven years older than Wen Tianxue.
Zhao Kai had a son who lived with his ex-wife. Wen Tianxue also had a son, and he lived with her.
Zhao Kai was extremely wealthy. In truth, whether this small company could make much money or not didn’t matter to him at all. It was merely one of the many companies under his name.
He had opened this company specifically for Wen Tianxue.
He was against letting Wen Tianxue become a housewife. He said that whether a person was a man or a woman, they ought to have something to do out in society.
Like most women, Wen Tianxue loved all things beautiful, so Zhao Kai also opened two nail salons and an exquisite dessert shop for her.
When Wen Tianxue went to the luxury counters to buy bags and cosmetics, she would usually take one look and tell the sales assistant to wrap it up. A lot of things, she only realized she didn’t like that much after bringing them home.
The things she didn’t like, she gave to her best friend.
This best friend was a true confidante she had been close to since her teens, not one of those fake friends from some “rich wives’ circle.”
Her best friend basically didn’t need to buy clothes for herself. Just the brand-new clothes Wen Tianxue didn’t want were enough to stock a small online shop.
When Wen Tianxue traveled with Zhao Kai, they stayed at the most high-end hotels no matter where they went.
On their most extravagant trip, between flights, hotels, and duty-free shopping-before they had even officially started sightseeing-they had already spent nearly three hundred thousand.
That staggering number left her best friend so envious her jaw practically hit the floor.
However, if two people could become friends, it certainly wasn’t because one of them spent all her time envying the other. That would be too exhausting.
Wen Tianxue envied her best friend too.
Her best friend lived an ordinary, modest life. She wasn’t fabulously rich, but when she spoke at home, her words carried weight.
All the big and small decisions in her household were hers to make. Her husband and son both revolved around her too. Though they occasionally made her angry, she possessed something at home that Wen Tianxue did not-dignity.
Once, Zhao Kai and Wen Tianxue took their parents out to eat.
The waiter brought over a dish of boiled fish in chili oil. Wen Tianxue picked up a large piece of tender fish for Zhao Kai’s father and placed it on his plate. “Dad, try the fish. It’s their specialty. We used to come here all the time-”
With a loud smack, Zhao Kai slammed his palm onto the table and roared, “Did you fucking leave your brain at home today? Giving the old man something this spicy-what the hell are you trying to do?”
Wen Tianxue hurriedly picked the fish back onto her own plate, her face flushing bright red.
Another time, Wen Tianxue was at home alone at night, watching TV. Zhao Kai came back in the middle of the night, so drunk he could barely walk straight.
Wen Tianxue smelled that particular scent of a KTV on him-cigarettes and alcohol mixed with the cheap perfume worn by hostess girls.
She handed him a glass of warm water. “Drink some water. It’ll help you sober up.”
Zhao Kai took it and downed it in one go. “What’re you doing?”
Zhao Kai was always like this. Once he drank, he turned deaf and blind. It didn’t matter what Wen Tianxue was doing; as soon as he’d had alcohol, his catchphrase was always:
“What’re you doing?”
Wen Tianxue pointed at the TV. “Watching a drama.”
Zhao Kai leaned over and wrapped an arm around Wen Tianxue. “What drama?”
Wen Tianxue said, “The Untamed.”
Zhao Kai slurred thickly, “Is it… good?”
Wen Tianxue nodded, her eyes practically sparkling as she looked at the TV screen. “It’s good. Wang Yibo is so handsome.”
Zhao Kai glanced at her, then suddenly grabbed a vase from the table and smashed it hard into the TV. The screen went black at once, and the living room sank into silence.
He gripped Wen Tianxue by the throat and shoved her down into the sofa, then slapped her across the face.
This story may have something to do with this novel.
Or it may not.
Just think of it as me chatting with you.
