Chapter 66
Chapter 66
Huang Yuanrui cried out, “What is that?!”
He Qian said softly, “My hand… I just held your hand.”
Huang Yuanrui forced her fingers against her eyelids and finally managed to pry her eyes open.
He Qian’s hand was hard and ice-cold, like stone. Huang Yuanrui had thought He Qian had stuffed a chilled glass into her hand. It hadn’t even occurred to her that it could be a woman’s hand.
All at once, something He Qian had said flashed through Huang Yuanrui’s mind.
Just now, when Huang Yuanrui had complained that she was cold, what had He Qian said?
She seemed to have said… she would find something to cover Huang Yuanrui with. At the time, Huang Yuanrui had even thought she was being kind.
But she hadn’t said she would find a blanket. Or some clothes. Or a quilt…
What had she said she would find?
Oh. She had said a bedsheet.
What kind of person gets covered with a bedsheet?
Only the dead in a morgue get covered with bedsheets.
Huang Yuanrui suddenly sensed the malice He Qian had been hiding.
Of course. A mistress had swaggered right into the wife-to-be’s home to provoke her. How could she not be malicious?
Huang Yuanrui turned her head and looked. He Qian was sitting right beside her, so close they were practically face-to-face.
He Qian’s entire face was shrouded in a gray pallor. Even her pupils were gray.
Her eyes did not blink once. She simply stared at Huang Yuanrui in silence.
Huang Yuanrui finally realized something was wrong. She abruptly lifted her head and looked around Qin Song’s home, and her whole body went rigid.
This place, this setup… how was this a home? This was a mortuary!
Huang Yuanrui smacked herself on the forehead. Why hadn’t she looked around when she first came in? She had just followed He Qian into this mortuary and sat straight down on this sofa.
She felt as though she had stupidly walked right into He Qian’s enormous trap.
Aside from a sofa, a table, and a huge air conditioner, there was nothing else here. The only thing in the very center of the room was an iron-framed bed.
There was no body on the bed, only a bedsheet that had been lifted aside.
Where had the body gone…? Huang Yuanrui thought with difficulty.
Right. She knew now…
The body was sitting right beside her, holding her hand.
Huang Yuanrui could almost see it: everything in this room had originally been still. Then, when she rang the doorbell, the corpse on the iron-framed bed shifted. With a strange smile, it gently lifted the bedsheet, sat up stiffly, climbed down from the bed, and walked stiffly to the door to open it for Huang Yuanrui…
Huang Yuanrui thought of the time she had spent leaning back on the sofa with her eyes closed because they felt uncomfortable. On the surface, He Qian had been speaking in a small, humble voice. But if Huang Yuanrui had opened her eyes then, perhaps she would have seen He Qian staring at her with a sinister gaze. Or perhaps He Qian had been covering her mouth with those rigid, ice-cold fingers, secretly laughing…
Suddenly, everything made sense to Huang Yuanrui.
Why wasn’t He Qian afraid of the cold?
Because He Qian was already dead.
Why was the air conditioner in He Qian’s home set so low?
Because it was the cold air of a mortuary.
Why had He Qian said, “You and I aren’t the same”?
Because one of them was in the world of the living, and the other was in the world of the dead.
Why didn’t He Qian mind Qin Song marrying Huang Yuanrui?
Because Huang Yuanrui was Qin Song’s bride in the living world, while she was Qin Song’s bride in the underworld. Huang Yuanrui and Qin Song were getting married; He Qian and Qin Song had a ghost marriage…
Huang Yuanrui finally understood why He Qian had said she wanted Qin Song to bring her clothes and money.
Because what she meant wasn’t bring at all.
She meant burn.
