Chapter 49
Chapter 49
That day, Huang Yuanrui ordered a bunch of takeout again, disguising them as a table full of freshly cooked dishes before calling Qin Song over to eat.
She wanted to observe Qin Song and get an indirect sense of whether Zhang Qiong had told him about the things she had done. She needed to know if they had broken up and, most importantly, if the breakup was final.
The two had agreed to meet at noon, but Qin Song didn’t arrive until 12:24 PM. He was over twenty minutes late, something that had never happened before.
Huang Yuanrui suppressed her internal displeasure, a smile plastered on her face as she asked, “Why are you just getting here now? I’ve been waiting for nearly half an hour. You’ve never been late before, Hubby.”
Qin Song didn’t offer an explanation, try to coax her, or apologize as he usually did. He simply said flatly:
“Oh, something came up at the office. I got delayed.”
Huang Yuanrui stared into his eyes for a moment before turning away to get the bowls and chopsticks.
“Try some. I made all your favorites. Pork ribs with potatoes, numb-and-spicy basa fish… Oh, I’ve got some tomato and egg drop soup warming on the induction cooker. Have some soup first,” Huang Yuanrui said as she ladled a bowl for Qin Song.
Qin Song took the bowl and started drinking immediately.
Huang Yuanrui cried out, “Wait, wait, wait! Slow down! It’s hot! Let me get you a spoon!”
It was too late. By the time she spoke, Qin Song had already taken a large gulp from the bowl.
Huang Yuanrui looked at him anxiously. “Did you burn your tongue, Hubby?”
Qin Song stared blankly at the bowl in his hand. “Ah, I didn’t really feel anything. It’s fine.”
Huang Yuanrui tried a small sip of the soup in his hand, and her tongue was instantly scalded numb.
She set the soup bowl aside. “Let it cool down. Eat the main dishes first. See if today’s cooking tastes good.”
Qin Song obediently picked up his rice bowl and began eating. He ate in silence, moving like a robot.
Huang Yuanrui cleared her throat and asked with feigned casualness, “You seem a bit unhappy today. Did something happen?”
Qin Song picked up a piece of rib, not even looking up as he said, “Nothing happened. Just a bit tired from work.”
Huang Yuanrui pressed, “Just tired? I feel like you’re in a bad mood, like you’ve run into some trouble.”
Qin Song glanced at her. “No.”
Huang Yuanrui had a pretty good idea of what was going on now-Zhang Qiong must have already broken up with him.
She pulled her phone out of her apron pocket, swiped a few times, and placed it in front of Qin Song.
“Hubby, help me look at this. I picked out two necklaces today, but I can’t decide which one suits me better. Can you help me choose?”
She watched his expression closely.
If Qin Song showed impatience or flatly refused to buy it for her, she could basically conclude that he knew what she had done.
Qin Song took the phone, swiped back and forth a couple of times, and handed it back to her.
“I can’t choose; they’re both fine. If you like them, buy both.”
Huang Yuanrui breathed a sigh of relief.
She cupped her cheeks and said, “How could I bear to do that? Just looking is enough. You work so hard to earn money; I should be a virtuous wife and save money for you.”
Qin Song didn’t say anything, only giving a slight nod.
He took large bites, and his rice bowl was empty within minutes.
Huang Yuanrui stood up. “Let me get you another bowl.”
“No need, I’m full,” Qin Song said. “I want to lie down for a bit.”
With that, he briskly stripped off his outer clothes, climbed into bed, and leaned against the headboard pillows to play on his phone.
Huang Yuanrui sat alone at the table, looking at the spread of unfinished food. Suddenly, she lost her appetite as well.
