Chapter 64
Chapter 64
They went to hospital after hospital, and every doctor told them the same thing: the fetus’s heart condition would be extremely difficult to cure through surgery.
After discussing it and weighing their options, He Qian and Qin Song finally decided to give up the baby.
He Qian asked Qin Song, “Are we being too selfish, deciding its life and death just like this?”
Qin Song said, “Knowing it has a defect and still making it come into the world to suffer would be even more selfish. It can go back to heaven, save up enough stars, and come find us again with a healthy body.”
A few days later, He Qian was admitted to the hospital. After a series of examinations, she took the two pills the nurse gave her and received an injection to induce labor.
He Qian did not feel that the injection hurt very much.
One fact kept repeating itself in her mind: Once this shot goes in, will the baby die?
She felt the whole process was too fast. So fast it was almost absurd.
This child’s tiny heart had been beating strongly inside her body for months, yet in just a few hours, that heart would stop forever.
The injection was truly that powerful. She could feel the baby’s movements growing weaker, little by little.
He Qian gently stroked her belly, tears streaming down her face.
“Baby, are you in pain right now?”
“Baby, how am I supposed to explain to someone as tiny as you what we’re going through together right now?”
At last, the faint fetal movements disappeared completely.
The next day, He Qian began having contractions. She was sent to the delivery room and “gave birth” to the baby.
She did not have the courage to look at the baby. She only asked about the sex, and was told it had indeed been a girl.
Her family all comforted her, saying she was still young and would have another, healthier baby in the future.
But none of them knew then that this was He Qian’s first and last time entering a delivery room.
Perhaps that child really had gone back to heaven to collect stars, but she never returned to He Qian’s side.
After they went home, Qin Song held He Qian’s hand, tears pouring down his face.
He said, “Qianqian, for all the sadness and hurt you’ve suffered today, I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you twice over.”
Qin Song’s parents did not dare blame He Qian openly, but they scattered their resentment into every little detail of daily life.
They stubbornly believed that a large part of the fetus’s heart problem must have come from things like the stretch mark massage oils, and the so-called prenatal yoga that was supposed to be good for the mother’s body.
Qin Song explained to them many times that a fetal heart problem could be caused by many different factors. Even the doctors could not give a definite conclusion, so they could not simply place all the blame on He Qian.
But Qin Song’s parents were obstinate and refused to listen.
He Qian merely had a steady temperament. That did not mean she was careless or oblivious.
She was very intelligent, and she possessed all the sensitivity any ordinary woman would have.
And so, an irreparable rift formed between her and her in-laws.
Now that her in-laws were going to Qin Song’s younger brother’s home, He Qian felt incredibly relieved.
That joy was more than enough to offset the pointed remarks, both overt and implied, that they made when they announced they were leaving.
After He Qian returned home, she went straight into the kitchen and got busy: stewing beef, boiling chestnuts, blanching ribs, steaming fish…
By the time Qin Song came home at noon, a table full of steaming hot dishes had already been laid out.
After lunch, He Qian carried the bowls and chopsticks to the sink, washed her hands, and saw her in-laws downstairs.
Qin Song packed a car full of things for his parents and his younger brother’s family. He arranged for a driver to take them to his brother’s place, then got into his own car and went back to the company for work.
He Qian returned home alone, stretched luxuriously, and planned to take a nap first, then ask one of her girlfriends to go out for a beauty treatment in the afternoon.
“Ding-dong~” The doorbell rang. He Qian walked over and opened the door.
The door opened, and Huang Yuanrui stood there in a camisole and jeans, smiling sweetly at He Qian.
He Qian’s expression turned puzzled.
Huang Yuanrui flattened her palm and gestured toward He Qian, saying politely yet playfully, “I’m here for you, big sister.”
He Qian nodded, indicating for Huang Yuanrui to come in.
Huang Yuanrui smiled and followed He Qian inside.
He Qian led her into the living room and pointed at the sofa. Huang Yuanrui sat down without the slightest hesitation.
He Qian poured two cups of tea and set them on the table. Then she looked into Huang Yuanrui’s eyes and quietly waited for her to speak.
