Chapter 60

By the time Qin Song led Huang Yuanrui out of the traffic police station, it was already noon.

The Volvo was sturdy, but the impact had been too severe. In the end, it still had to be sent to the 4S dealership for repairs.

As for the red Fit, it was basically totaled.

The female owner of the Fit was just over two months pregnant, and she had been so frightened that she went to the hospital for a checkup. Her husband stormed into the traffic police station and tried to grab Huang Yuanrui by the collar, but Qin Song forced himself between them and stopped him.

Qin Song drove Huang Yuanrui back to her place. She sat in the passenger seat with a long face and didn’t say a word.

Qin Song said, “I don’t get it. Why were you driving onto the elevated road so early in the morning?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “To get injections.”

Qin Song suddenly lost his temper. “Injections, injections-what injections are you getting all day long? You’ve had so many, and I don’t see how you look any different from before! Each shot costs thousands, even tens of thousands. Do you think it’s easy for me to make money out there right now?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “Why do you have so many complaints about me now? I’ve been getting them for years and you never said anything. Now that there’s been an accident, you start blaming me? I spend a little of your money now and you’re going to be this petty about it!”

Qin Song suddenly asked, “Which plastic surgery clinic are you going to for the injections?”

Annoyed, Huang Yuanrui casually gave the name of a plastic surgery clinic she often went to. “Ouya Plastic Surgery.”

Qin Song said, “They open for business a little after seven?”

Huang Yuanrui froze for a moment, then said, “I was afraid there’d be a line. What’s wrong with going early?”

When they got back to Tianfeng Hotel, Huang Yuanrui got out of the car and went upstairs without hesitation. Qin Song didn’t follow her. He turned the car around and drove off.

After taking only a couple of steps, Huang Yuanrui stopped. She had thought Qin Song would at least get out and come after her to comfort her. After all, she had been badly shaken by the chain collision too.

But when she turned around, all she smelled was the exhaust from Qin Song’s car.

Qin Song drove straight to the 4S dealership and removed the memory card from the dashcam in the Volvo.

Back at his office, he finally saw where Huang Yuanrui had been driving every day.

In the footage, the underground garage of Tianfeng Hotel appeared first, followed by shopping malls and plastic surgery clinics. Then, with alarming frequency, there were appearances of the residential compound where Zhang Qiong lived, the schools Zhang Qiong’s children attended…

Qin Song’s gaze gradually turned cold. He walked out of the office, went downstairs, got in his car, and headed straight for Tianfeng Hotel.

When he opened the door, Huang Yuanrui spoke first, displeased. “What, only now did you remember to care whether I’m alive or dead?”

Qin Song said, “Why were you following Zhang Qiong? And how did you find her address and her children’s schools?”

Huang Yuanrui fell silent.

Only after a long while did she speak. “You snooped through my dashcam footage?”

Qin Song said calmly, “That was my car to begin with. My dashcam.”

Huang Yuanrui fell silent again.

Holding back his anger, Qin Song continued, “I’m asking you a question. What was your purpose in following her?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “Where do you get the nerve to interrogate me? You’re the one who cheated on me first!”

Qin Song said, “Then you could have come and asked me! Can’t you do things openly and honestly? What are you doing sneaking around behind my back?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “Openly and honestly? Are you even qualified to use those words? Didn’t you get involved with her in secret too? Did you ever come openly and honestly to ask me whether I allowed it?”

Qin Song said, “Why would I ask you? Are you my wife?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “You accidentally said what you really think, didn’t you? You never took me seriously at all. When you cheated on He Qian, that counted as cheating, but when you cheat on me, it doesn’t? What kind of logic is that?”

Qin Song said, “Tell me first. Why were you following her? Have you spoken to her?”

Huang Yuanrui said with absolute certainty, “No. I was just following her car, that’s all. I can’t be bothered to talk to her! I simply wanted to see what kind of vixen had bewitched you away from me.”
Qin Song said, “You’re not lying to me, are you?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “If you don’t trust me, why did you come ask me? I tell you, and you still don’t believe me.”

Qin Song said, “What you’re doing is completely absurd-and besides, she and I were only together for a short while. We’ve already split up. There’s no point in following her anymore.”

Huang Yuanrui asked, “Do you still love her?”

Qin Song paused. “I’m too old for that. What love? What’s there to love or not love?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “You’ve been walking around half-dead all day these past few days. Is it because you broke up with her?”

Qin Song said, “That’s part of it, and there’s also pressure from work. She really isn’t that important to me. We broke up, and that’s that. Why are you obsessing over all this pointless crap?”

Huang Yuanrui asked, “Can you promise me you’ll never get back together with her?”

Qin Song said, “Get back together? What am I, fucking eighteen?”

Huang Yuanrui said, “You’d better remember this. If you dare get involved with her again, I’ll follow her every single day!”

Qin Song said, “Don’t fucking threaten me. Things are over between me and her, but I’m saying that because it’s my own damn decision, not because I’m afraid of you!”

Huang Yuanrui said, “Fine. Then I won’t stalk her anymore, either.”

Qin Song said, “You said that yourself! And another thing-I really don’t like the way you talk to me now. Lately, you’re always pushing me, threatening me, trying to scare me…”

Before he could finish, Huang Yuanrui put on her shoes, turned, and walked out. The door slammed shut behind her with a heavy bang.

Qin Song had a bellyful of rage and nowhere to put it. With one sweep of his arm, he knocked everything on the table to the floor.

The iceberg ashtray Huang Yuanrui had bought also fell, landing with a clang.

He had no idea what material the ashtray was made of, and he couldn’t even tell whether this one was Huang Yuanrui’s or his own… but somehow, it didn’t shatter. It slowly spun a few times on the floor before coming to a steady stop.

Qin Song picked it up with a look of disgust and put it back where it had been.

He figured that after another fight or two, he could truly take the opportunity to break up with Huang Yuanrui.

After leaving, Huang Yuanrui went straight down to the underground parking garage and drove off in Qin Song’s other car.

She pried the card out of the car’s dashcam and, with practiced ease, drove toward Zhang Qiong’s home.

She was already far too worked up. Wrecking one car hadn’t been enough to calm her down.

More than that, the long days of following and peeping on Zhang Qiong had given her a strange thrill. She had grown used to having this dark little pleasure in her life, and from it, she could always draw a sense of superiority-the enemy was in the open while she remained hidden in the shadows.

After driving a few kilometers, she suddenly remembered that she had left in such a hurry she had forgotten her sunglasses and mask. She raised her head and checked her current appearance in the rearview mirror.

That glance did more than show her reflection. In the mirror, she suddenly saw a black car traveling a few dozen meters behind her.

The car looked a little familiar. It seemed somewhat like the “Black Fish” she had chased that morning.

She slowed down, intending to let the car pass her so she could get a clear look and confirm whether it was really the Black Fish.

Unexpectedly, the moment she reduced her speed, the Black Fish keenly slowed as well. Huang Yuanrui still couldn’t make out what it looked like.

By now, Huang Yuanrui had slowed to a crawl, inching forward at barely forty kilometers an hour. Cars behind her honked and overtook her one after another.

Only that car continued following behind her. Its speed had also dropped to around forty kilometers an hour, and the two cars, one in front and one behind, crept slowly along the road.
