Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Zhang Qiong’s husband had finally found a new job recently and had gone out of town on a business trip.
With both children away at their grandmother’s house in the countryside for summer vacation, Zhang Qiong’s home was finally empty.
Qin Song lay with his head in Zhang Qiong’s lap as she gently massaged his brow.
“It’s been over a month since she last brought up the whole divorce and marriage thing with you. How are things going between you two?”
“Sigh… I just told her I’d give the divorce serious consideration. She didn’t say much after that. We’re just carrying on as if that conversation never happened, just making do.”
“And what are your actual thoughts?”
Qin Song sat up and leaned against the headboard.
“My actual thoughts… I mean, do you really think I want a divorce? Life is perfectly fine as it is; there’s no need for it.”
Zhang Qiong nodded. “True. I have a simple way of thinking; I only look at things from your perspective. Your life right now is harmonious and happy; getting a divorce really wouldn’t be worth it. That girl is just thinking about things too simply.”
Qin Song agreed. “Exactly. Look at you and your husband-things got so bad between you two that you actually got the divorce certificate, yet you’re still living together. When life gets all tangled up in the daily grind and both families are involved, it’s not that easy to make a clean break.”
Zhang Qiong asked, “So what do you plan to do? Just keep stalling her like this?”
Qin Song replied, “I’ll keep stalling for now. I’m hoping she’ll get fed up and move back to her hometown sooner. Staying in City A every day, she’s bound to start another fight with me over this sooner or later, and I really hate fighting!”
Zhang Qiong looked at Qin Song earnestly. “I’m going to be honest with you, even if you don’t like hearing it. Although you’re decisive and bold when it comes to business, you seem a bit indecisive when it comes to relationships.”
“Am I?” Qin Song wondered. “I thought I was just being sentimental.”
Zhang Qiong said, “Everyone has their weaknesses, and perhaps this is yours. But it’s not necessarily a flaw; at least I appreciate your genuine nature.”
Qin Song added, “It’s true, I’m soft-hearted. I don’t want things to get ugly with her. If I were truly cold-hearted, I would have broken up with her a long time ago.”
Zhang Qiong cautioned, “But a person can’t have everything. It’s the same with relationships-you have to make choices eventually; you can’t just keep running away. If one person tries to keep all the good things for themselves, even the heavens won’t stand for it.”
“Sister, let’s discuss this another day,” Qin Song groaned. “My head hurts.”
“You see? This is you running away again.”
“Waaa, Sister, stop lecturing me! I’m hungry. I want to eat those egg tarts you bake.”
Zhang Qiong stood up with a smile. “Fine, fine, I’ll go make some for you.”
Qin Song rubbed his eyes and lay back down. Just then, the sound of a new WeChat message notification chimed nearby.
Thinking it was his own phone, he checked it, only to realize it wasn’t.
He glanced at Zhang Qiong’s phone and saw a message from someone named “Liang He”:
“What are you doing?”
Feeling a surge of irritation, Qin Song shouted, “Sister! Someone sent you a WeChat message! Who is this?”
Zhang Qiong walked back in quickly, checked her phone, tapped the screen a few times, and said casually, “Oh, just a friend.”
Qin Song pressed, “What kind of friend? Male or female?”
Zhang Qiong replied, “Female. We used to live in the same neighborhood and often went for walks together.”
Qin Song thought about it. The name didn’t sound particularly masculine, so he let his suspicions go. He wrapped his arms around Zhang Qiong’s waist like a spoiled child. “Sister, you aren’t allowed to find other men out there. You can only be mine.”
Zhang Qiong teased, “I’m already busy enough looking after a little ancestor like you. Besides, at my age, who would want me?”
“I do,” Qin Song said. “You’re exactly my type.”
Zhang Qiong covered her face and laughed.
After coaxing Qin Song to leave, Zhang Qiong sat on the bed and opened her phone.
While Qin Song was still there, she had tapped the screen to set Liang He’s WeChat to “Do Not Disturb.”
Now, she carefully replied to Liang He’s message: “I’m at home. I just baked some egg tarts.”
Liang He replied instantly: “If I don’t hear from you for a few hours, my heart starts to itch. How can you be so captivating?”
Such cheesy sweet talk didn’t disgust Zhang Qiong at all.
She pressed the phone to her chest, feeling a sense of sweetness.
She replied: “I miss you so much too. When can I see you again?”
Liang He: “The kids are on summer vacation lately, and my wife and children are around me every day. I’m a bit tied up.”
Zhang Qiong: “Alright. Then can you spend more time chatting with me on your phone?”
Liang He: “No problem. I love hearing about every little detail of your life. You can share everything here; I’ll always be around.”
Recalling Liang He’s tall frame and gentle face in her mind, Zhang Qiong smiled happily.
