Chapter 74

Chen Daji understood the general gist of it:

“So you’re saying a forced melon isn’t sweet!”

“And once you pluck it, it’s actually a bomb that goes ‘boom’ and blows your head wide open!”

Chen Daji’s analogy even made the elegant Chang Huaiyuan chuckle.

“The words are crude, but the logic is sound.”

“Young Friend, this comparison is actually quite apt.”

After a brief pause, Chang Huaiyuan spoke again.

“Brother Old Sixth Hui, what is the situation over at the ancient tomb?”

Old Sixth Hui, who had been pulled into a seat by Hua Jiunan, took a sip from his wine cup.

“This afternoon, the thing inside let out a cry. It should be waking up soon.”

“Oh, right. The little ones under my command found a robber’s hole at the back of the tomb.”

“There was a corpse inside, killed by filthy things.”

“Judging by the clothes, it should be someone involved in tomb raiding.”

Curious, Chen Daji asked, “Old Immortal, what is tomb raiding?”

Old Sixth Hui gave a low chuckle. “It means grave robbing.”

“Profiting off the dead!”

Hua Jiunan grew thoughtful upon hearing this.

“In that case, the Nine Orifices Jade that Uncle Chen Fu found at the mine was brought out by grave robbers.”

“It seems they must have been a gang.”

“One died, and the others ran off with the funerary objects.”

Chen Daji also had a sudden realization:

“That’s it!”

“The grave robbers sold the Nine Orifices Jade, and the buyer treated it like a treasure and gave it to Zhao Fei’s father!”

Hemp-clad Grandmother saw how Chen Daji was analyzing things so logically and couldn’t help but chuckle.

“I really couldn’t tell.”

“You usually seem like such a little rascal, but you’re actually quite clever when things get serious.”

“Grandmother is liking you more and more. Why don’t you go hang yourself and commit suicide right now? You can stay by Grandmother’s side and practice cultivation after you die.”

Chen Daji wasn’t done with living yet. Hearing this, he shrunk his neck back.

“Don’t joke around, Grandmother. I haven’t even married a wife yet. I’m not ready to die.”

Hemp-clad Grandmother let out a strange, cackling laugh.

“Didn’t I tell you before? After you die, you can choose one of my eight maidservants to be your wife.”

“If you perform well and can make Grandmother happy, I might even let all eight of them marry you!”

Chen Daji looked at the eight shy female ghosts and felt a bit tempted…

Seeing this, Hemp-clad Grandmother laughed even more happily.

“Jie-jie-jie! You little rascal, look at that pathetic expression of yours!”

“How does that saying go? ‘Ghosts are full of lies.’ Yes, that’s the one.”

“Remember this: you can’t trust the words of a ghost, especially those wrongful death ghosts who try to hook souls.”

“To find a replacement, they will use every trick in the book to bewitch people!”

“If you believe a ghost’s words, you’ll be one step away from death!”

Hemp-clad Grandmother’s words were not in vain; in the days to come, they would actually save Chen Daji’s life.

While the group was chatting, Hu Qingshan of the Hu Family suddenly appeared in the courtyard.

Beside him was still that young girl with shimmering eyes, Hu Fei’er.

Hu Qingshan was also startled to see Old Sixth Hui, but he simply offered his congratulations without asking for the reason.

Instead, he spoke to Hua Jiunan.

“Young master physician, Hu has come uninvited because my ancestor told me to bring you a message.”

“The ancestor said: what sleeps in the ancient tomb is a fierce deity. It’s best not to let him wake up, or it will be very troublesome!”

“At the very least, with our abilities, we cannot deal with him!”

Hu Qingshan’s words shocked all the spirit mediums present.

The ancestor of the Hu Family, Lord Hu San, was the head of all Immortal Spirits in the world.

He had attained the Dao during the era of the Human Sovereigns, over five thousand years ago.

Lord Hu San had always accumulated merit through good deeds and devoted himself to cultivation, rarely showing his face nowadays.

However, the legends regarding him were countless.

It was said that during the Shang Dynasty, many animals with spiritual potential gathered the essence of heaven and earth and the brilliance of the sun and moon to cultivate into spirits.

Some helped the people, while others harmed them, making life unbearable-especially in the Changbai Mountain region.

The Jade Emperor was enraged and ordered the Five Thunder Deity to lead heavenly soldiers and generals to Changbai Mountain to annihilate all the spirits.

When the Five Thunder Deity arrived at Changbai Mountain and was about to strike with thunder, a man appeared.

He said he was a fox immortal from Changbai Mountain and had come to plead for mercy for the spirits.

Heaven values all life; he prayed for the deity to spare the living beings.

The Five Thunder Deity said, ‘I am acting on the Jade Emperor’s decree and cannot change it on my own.’

The fox immortal replied, ‘I am willing to guide these spirits toward the righteous path to avoid excessive slaughter, which would go against the Heavenly Dao.’

Hearing this, the deity felt it was reasonable. He withdrew his troops to heaven to report back.

When the Jade Emperor heard this, he also felt the fox immortal’s words made sense and granted the request.

He then appointed this fox immortal as the head of Changbai Mountain to lead all the immortals and established rules to restrain these spirits.

This fox immortal was Lord Hu San, and that was the origin of the Hu Family.
