Chapter 62

The two of them waited in the wind and snow for over an hour. Just as Chen Daji was jumping and stomping around to keep from freezing, a sharp whistling sound suddenly pierced the air from the distance.

They watched as the snow on the ground seemed to be crushed by an invisible wave of air, automatically parting to form a path.

A giant rat, over two meters long, came flying toward them, hugging the ground at high speed.

As it neared Hua Jiunan and Chen Daji, the rat leaped into the air.

Mid-air, it transformed into the form of Old Sixth Hui and landed in front of Hua Jiunan.

A cold light flared in Old Sixth Hui’s small eyes.

“Young master physician, who bullied you?”

“I’ll go tear him into shredded meat right now!”

After Hua Jiunan explained what had happened, Old Sixth Hui’s expression turned solemn.

“The fact that the young master physician couldn’t find the filthy things with a luopan means it hasn’t woken up yet.”

“But a fellow from over a thousand years ago with thousands of people buried with him… if he’s truly come into his power, he won’t be easy to deal with!”

Chen Daji grew nervous upon hearing this.

“Old Immortal, are you saying even you can’t beat the thing in the tomb?”

Old Sixth Hui smiled proudly.

“I have practiced my cultivation for a thousand years; I’d like to think I have some skill. Besides, after receiving the young master physician’s message, I didn’t dare be careless. I brought over a dozen of my brothers with me.”

“They’re just a bit slower and will take a moment to arrive!”

“Rest assured, if the thing in the tomb doesn’t come out tonight, then so be it. But if it dares to come out and harm the young master physician, I’ll make sure it never returns!”

Still uneasy, Chen Daji said hesitantly,

“Old Immortal, it’s not my place to talk too much, but I just want to remind you…”

“There are several thousand mummified corpses in that mountain…”

Old Sixth Hui said coldly,

“No matter how many mummified corpses there are, there aren’t as many as my little ones!”

“A mere few thousand isn’t even enough to fill the gaps between their teeth!”

With that, Old Sixth Hui let out a strange, shrill whistle.

Hua Jiunan felt a slight vibration beneath his feet.

A moment later, countless rats burrowed out from the snow, densely surrounding the entire small hilltop.

The large ones were a full meter long, while even the small ones were twenty centimeters. Their red eyes were particularly terrifying against the backdrop of the white snow.

Old Sixth Hui looked at Chen Daji with a faint, knowing smile. “Are my little ones enough to deal with the mummified corpses?”

“If not, I’ll call some more over from the other peaks!”

Chen Daji nodded dumbly and repeatedly. “Enough, Old Immortal, it’s plenty!”

“If you call any more, I’m afraid there won’t be enough mummified corpses for them to eat…”

On the way back, Chen Daji kept muttering under his breath, “I’m stupid, I’m really freaking stupid!”

“When it comes to numbers, what could possibly outnumber rats…”

With the Gray Family Immortals protecting them from the shadows, Chen Daji was now full of confidence.

When Professor Ma asked him about the situation, he took full charge and said, “You can sleep soundly tonight, old man!”

“If the things in the ancient tomb really dare to crawl out, they’ll be nothing more than a pile of snacks!”

“There might not even be enough to go around…”

Professor Ma looked at Hua Jiunan skeptically, but after seeing the young man nod, he finally felt at ease.

He had heard Chief Zhou talk about Hua Jiunan’s prowess before.

“Southern Mao, Northern Ma” was no joke.

The spirit mediums of the Northern Lands all called this boy ‘young master physician’!

With Hua Jiunan’s guarantee, even if an evil ghost escaped from the eighteenth level of hell, it would probably be beaten back!

Once night had fully fallen, the dozens of workers excavating the ancient tomb returned to their rooms to rest with apprehensive hearts.

Because he was a coward, Chen Fu had already driven home after arranging dinner.

Left without supervision, Chen Daji began to truly let loose.

He kept raising his glass to offer toasts.

Chief Zhou came from a military background, so his alcohol tolerance was naturally high. However, because he was worried about emergencies, he didn’t drink much.

Deputy Team Leader Niu from the Provincial Expert Group, who was eating with them, clearly looked down on a rural youth like Chen Daji and largely ignored him.

Professor Ma, however, was a surprise.

This elderly man, who usually carried an air of scholarly refinement, was quite bold when it came to drinking.

After a few glasses, he took off his outer coat and gave a live recitation of the Poet Immortal Li Bai’s poem, “Bring in the Wine.”

Every word and phrase exuded a magnificent spirit:

“Do you not see the Yellow River’s waters flow from the sky,
Rushing to the sea, never to return?
Do you not see the bright mirrors in high halls grieving over white hair,
Silken black in the morning, turned to snow by evening?
When life goes well, one must enjoy it to the full,
Do not let the golden goblet face the moon in vain.
Heaven made me with a purpose,
A thousand gold pieces spent will always come back.
…
A dappled horse, a fur coat worth a thousand gold,
Call the boy to take them and trade for fine wine,
And together we shall drown the sorrows of ten thousand ages!”

Chen Daji listened with yearning, secretly vowing to study hard in the future.

It turned out ancient poetry could be this cool!

Hua Jiunan didn’t eat with the others.

He brought some wine and food and went out into the wilderness alone.

“Sixth Brother Hui, where are you? Let’s have a drink together tonight.”

In the wind and snow, Old Sixth Hui’s figure slowly appeared.

Looking at Hua Jiunan holding the wine and food, this spirit medium of the Northern Lands-so often overlooked-felt a warmth spread through his heart.
