Chapter 95
Chapter 95
This time, the System didn’t try to deny it.
Because Dai Chunli, who had already been sent to the morgue and was covered in livor mortis… had come back to life!
“Nurse, is my mother really dead?” Jiang Lianlian asked, her expression grief-stricken.
She was being led into the hospital elevator by a nurse.
The nurse nodded. “Ms. Dai Chunli has indeed passed away. We need you to come and identify the body.”
*Ding!*
The elevator doors opened.
The two of them arrived at the entrance of the morgue on the first basement level.
As they stepped into the morgue’s corridor, an eerie, bone-chilling cold seemed to permeate the air.
The lighting here was dim; there was little difference between the lights being on or off.
The nurse was about to lead Jiang Lianlian inside to find the body when her phone suddenly vibrated.
“Pick up the phone! Mommy, pick up the phone! Pick up the phone! Mommy, pick up the phone!” A recorded child’s voice blared from the phone.
In the silence of the morgue, Jiang Lianlian flinched at the sudden ringtone.
The nurse pulled out her phone, saw the caller ID, and immediately stopped in her tracks.
She gave Jiang Lianlian an apologetic look.
“Ms. Jiang, I’m so sorry, my supervisor is calling. The reception isn’t very good here, so I’ll step out to take this.
“Your mother is in Morgue No. 3. Counting from right to left, she’s at the eighth bed. We haven’t put her in the cold storage locker yet. Go ahead and identify her first.”
Before the nurse could even finish her sentence, she was already walking away quickly.
“Hey, hey, wait a second…” Jiang Lianlian called out urgently, but mid-sentence, the nurse suddenly turned her head back.
The nurse added, “Oh, right, Ms. Jiang. When we were trying to resuscitate Ms. Dai, she regained consciousness for a few seconds.
“She said something about… a property deed. Keep an eye out and see if she has it on her.
“A document that important shouldn’t be cremated with the body.”
After finishing those few words, the nurse pulled the heavy morgue door shut with a loud *thud*.
Jiang Lianlian was left standing alone inside the morgue, the only living soul in the room.
A wave of cold air hit her, making her tremble uncontrollably.
“It… it should be fine,” Jiang Lianlian whispered, trying to summon some courage.
Part of her wanted to leave immediately.
But the nurse said… Dai Chunli had the property deed on her?
The old neighborhood they lived in was slated for demolition; that deed was worth a fortune.
“Jiang Weisen is supposedly dead. That bitch Jiang Li will die sooner or later too! Now that Mom is gone, the demolition compensation will be all mine.”
Jiang Lianlian began to calculate her gains.
Steeling her nerves, she shuffled a few steps toward Morgue No. 3.
Standing at the doorway, she craned her neck and peered inside.
However, she hesitated to actually step through the threshold.
Jiang Lianlian stood in the morgue corridor for a full ten minutes, and the nurse still hadn’t returned.
The longer she stood there, the more her scalp crawled.
This ghostly place was cold and dark; it really wasn’t a place for the living.
It would be better to just get it over with, grab the deed, and leave.
It was better than waiting here and letting her panic grow.
Jiang Lianlian made up her mind. Once she went in, she wouldn’t lift the white sheet covering the corpse’s face. She would only lift the part near the clothes’ pockets, find the deed, and get out!
It would only take thirty seconds.
Jiang Lianlian stared at Morgue No. 3, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
“From left to right… the eighth bed,” Jiang Lianlian muttered to herself.
Having counted the beds, she clenched her fists and walked quickly toward the gurney.
Holding her breath the entire time and enduring the stench of death, she lifted the fabric covering the pockets of the clothes and pants, searching through them carefully.
She searched for a long time but didn’t see even a shadow of the property deed.
Jiang Lianlian’s face was filled with confusion.
Furthermore, she had never seen her mother wear the clothes this corpse was dressed in.
“What are you looking for?” A familiar voice rang out right behind her ear.
A chill ran down Jiang Lianlian’s neck.
Her body stiffened as she twisted her head to look behind her.
Their eyes met.
Dai Chunli’s face, covered in cadaveric spots, broke into a smile that magnified right before Jiang Lianlian’s eyes.
“…AAAAHHH!!!”
Jiang Lianlian let out a terrified scream. Summoning courage from some unknown source, she shoved Dai Chunli aside and bolted.
Dai Chunli was knocked over, her femur slamming into the bed frame behind her. The brittle bone snapped on the spot.
Jiang Lianlian ran like a madwoman, screaming the whole way.
She fled all the way out of Mortuary No. 3 and reached the main door of the corridor. She twisted the doorknob frantically, pushing against the door over and over.
But the door seemed to be locked tight; no matter how hard she pushed, it wouldn’t budge.
Back at Mortuary No. 3, Dai Chunli dragged her injured leg and limped out in pursuit.
As she gave chase, she reached out toward Jiang Lianlian with a trembling, tearful voice, sounding deeply aggrieved.
“Lianlian… Lianlian, wait for Mommy… Lianlian…”
Dai Chunli’s voice sounded like a death knell.
To Jiang Lianlian, this was nothing less than a vengeful female ghost coming for her soul!
Paralyzed with fear, Jiang Lianlian collapsed to the floor and curled into a corner.
She hammered on the door incessantly, creating a rapid series of loud thuds. “Open the door!! …Is anyone there? Open the door, quick!!!”
Seeing Dai Chunli draw near-her icy fingertips even brushing against her shoulder-Jiang Lianlian’s eyes rolled back, foam gathered at her mouth, and she fainted dead away.
“Lianlian! My Lianlian… What’s wrong? Don’t scare Mommy!”
Dai Chunli desperately shook Jiang Lianlian’s body.
At that moment, the door to the mortuary area was pushed open from the outside.
A nurse entered and was startled to see a woman performing CPR on Jiang Lianlian.
“What happened? Why did she faint?” The nurse quickly called for a stretcher.
Dai Chunli sobbed and said, “I don’t know, she just suddenly fainted.”
A stretcher arrived shortly after and carried Jiang Lianlian away to the emergency room.
***
Outside in the hospital corridor, a small hanging television was broadcasting the Weird Tales livestream.
In the Live Streaming Room, Jiang Li stepped out of a black sedan.
The moment her foot touched the ground outside the car door-
Jiang Li’s body transformed from the little girl “Lili” back into her adult form, dressed in a black uniform.
Jiang Li stood outside the car and looked up at the tall, luxurious building before her.
The four large characters for “Clear Spring Hotel” hung high overhead, carrying a majestic sense of pressure.
