Chapter 86
Chapter 86
Jiang Li quickly turned her head away, refusing to look at the bloody scene.
It was obvious that an even more powerful Aberration Power controlled this Orphanage.
Could that powerful force be related to the thing inside the Coffin?
Jiang Li pondered this all the way back to the dormitory with the Black Kid.
Not long after they arrived, a new Caregiver was assigned to them.
“You can just call me Uncle Zhao. I’m the Caregiver who was recently transferred here.”
After entering the room, the new Caregiver took off his transparent raincoat and introduced himself.
Jiang Li froze for a second when she saw him.
Wasn’t this uncle the same one who had helped them at the entrance of the cafeteria?
He looked quite fierce.
Uncle Zhao continued, “I’ve looked over the records. There are four children in our dormitory: Zhuangzhuang, Niuniu, Lili, and Yangyang. The boys will sleep next to me. Let’s adjust the bunks.”
After Uncle Zhao finished speaking, he led them in swapping beds.
The Black Kid slept next to Uncle Zhao. Next was the Little Shota, then the Little Fatty Girl, and finally Jiang Li.
The Little Shota was currently in the Trial Adoption phase and hadn’t officially signed the contract yet. Once the adoption contract was signed the following day, he would officially move out of the dormitory.
After handling many trivial matters, it was time for bed.
Jiang Li calculated the days. The seventh birthday of “Lili,” the girl she was currently possessing, was in three days. If nothing went wrong and she managed to survive these three days, she would successfully achieve an A Rank clearance.
Furthermore, the newly assigned Uncle Zhao seemed like a decent person. He likely knew that dark environments could cause hallucinations, so to avoid this, he had specifically gone to collect a batch of new candles.
Outside the wooden cabin, the wind howled, rain lashed down, and thunder rolled. Inside, two white candles were lit, their warm glow preparing them for sleep.
After washing up, Jiang Li climbed into her blankets. At that moment, her peripheral vision caught the Little Fatty Girl’s arm.
The brown fur on it… had disappeared!
Jiang Li clearly remembered that when she ran into her at the cafeteria entrance at noon, there were still signs of pollution. What had the Little Fatty Girl experienced this afternoon to make the pollution vanish?
Jiang Li was about to write a note to ask her, but the evening news playing loudly on Uncle Zhao’s phone caught her attention.
“…It is understood that a serious case of ‘burglary and homicide’ occurred in the Binjiang Villa District. The deceased were a young couple. According to insiders, the killer’s methods were extremely brutal. The couple’s bodies were dismembered, their internal organs were missing, and their facial skin had been flayed off with tools. Relevant suspects have been arrested…”
The news mentioned the Binjiang Villa.
If Jiang Li remembered correctly, the Rat Couple lived there. The Vice Dean had mentioned it during her small talk with Mrs. Rat when they met that afternoon.
Knock, knock, knock-
Suddenly, there was a knock at the dormitory’s wooden door.
It was already ten o’clock at night; there shouldn’t be anyone outside. Inside the room, Uncle Zhao initially didn’t intend to respond. He instinctively felt it was “that thing” causing trouble.
However, the knocking was persistent, showing no sign of stopping.
Uncle Zhao helplessly climbed out of bed and put on his shoes. “Who is it?”
A familiar voice came from outside the door.
“It’s me. I’m Yangyang. I live here.”
It was the Little Shota.
Why was he back?
Uncle Zhao went to fetch a half-length mirror, then unlocked the door and aimed it toward the entrance.
“Come in,” Uncle Zhao commanded.
The wooden door pushed open.
The Little Shota and Yingying stood there, soaking wet. Their clothes were tattered and torn, and they had returned covered in blood.
“First, tell me-how many people are in the mirror?” Uncle Zhao asked.
The Little Shota took a look and answered earnestly, “Two people. Me and Yingying.”
Yingying nodded along. “Yes, two people.”
Hearing this answer, Uncle Zhao lowered his guard.
According to the rules, Yingying didn’t belong to this dormitory and wasn’t allowed to stay here. However, if he kicked her out, it would inevitably result in Yingying being outside alone. “The child’s safety” was the highest priority.
Therefore, for the sake of Yingying’s safety, Uncle Zhao agreed to let her stay for the night. He arranged for Yingying to sleep with Jiang Li and Niuniu.
“Sister Yingying, what happened with you and Yangyang? Why are you covered in blood? What on earth happened?”
The Little Fatty Girl sat on the bed, questioning Yingying as she came out from her shower.
Yingying was dressed in Jiang Li’s clean clothes and was drying her hair with a towel. Her movements stiffened when she heard the Little Fatty Girl’s question.
Immediately after, tears welled up in her eyes. She crouched directly onto the floor, hugging her knees and sobbing. Her shoulders shook violently.
“Uncle and Auntie… they were killed by bandits, waah…” Yingying sobbed as she spoke, wiping away tears.
However, Jiang Li noticed that Yingying’s fingernails were digging into her palms. Yingying was using the pain to force the tears out.
Affected by the atmosphere, the Little Shota’s nose twitched, and he began to cry as well. Thinking back to those horrific scenes and images, his body couldn’t stop shivering. He was trembling all over.
“Alright, Niuniu, stop questioning your brother and sister. They just got back from giving their statements at the police station. Let them get some rest.”
Uncle Zhao bailed them out and offered a few words of comfort.
Late at night, everyone was preparing to sleep.
At that moment, a sudden burst of static hissed in Jiang Li’s ear. This was followed by a series of strange “beep-beep-beep” sounds.
This was… Morse Code!?
The Intelligence Department was sending her a message in Morse Code!
Jiang Li was startled. Although she didn’t understand the reason behind the sudden contact, she quickly took out a pen and paper to record the corresponding information.
She filled half a page with dense writing. As Jiang Li looked over the contents, she felt her scalp go numb.
This transmission conveyed two pieces of information.
First, a Serial Killer in a Huaguo prison had mysteriously disappeared on the day of her execution. The killer was female and left-handed. Her signature MO involved skinning and heart extraction. She was extremely skilled, had been a fugitive for ten years, and was an expert at forging crime scenes and framing others.
Second, a Hidden Chosen One had infiltrated the Orphanage Instance. This Hidden Chosen One belonged to a hostile faction and was highly likely to be the aforementioned Serial Killer. To prevent the communication from being intercepted, they used Morse Code-a method the killer would not be able to understand.
The Intelligence Department had narrowed the suspects down to Yangyang and Yingying. They warned Jiang Li in the message to be careful and stay safe at all costs.
Beside Jiang Li’s bed, Yingying, who was sharing a blanket with the Little Fatty Girl, was frowning and digging at her ear.
“What’s wrong, Sister Yingying? Are your ears uncomfortable?” the Little Fatty Girl asked, turning her head.
Yingying scratched it a few more times. “It’s nothing. Maybe some water got in while I was washing my hair. I’m hearing some phantom ringing.”
Jiang Li glanced at her, her eyes flickering. A moment later, she put away the coded note and got out of bed.
Jiang Li walked straight to the candle. She held the note to the flame, burning it until it was nothing but ash.
