Chapter 46

It took Wei Sen an enormous amount of effort to lay Li Chang’s corpse flat on the dining table and strip off all his clothes.

She had to admit, Li Chang had excellent proportions: broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and even abs.

A flicker of regret passed through Wei Sen’s eyes, but she felt not the slightest grief over Li Chang’s death.

Ever since her car accident, she had noticed something seemed wrong with the way she perceived emotions. Back then, it had been Li Chang who took her to see a psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist’s final conclusion was that it was a lingering aftereffect of the accident-emotional detachment, a type of personality disorder.

Wei Sen turned on the air conditioner’s warm air, then, while waiting for the corpse to thaw, went back to the counter to choose a suitable knife.

Would a cleaver be better, or a fruit knife?

Wei Sen looked at the two knives in her hands and thought it over seriously.

Theoretically speaking, under limited conditions, a cleaver was more suitable for dissecting a corpse than a fruit knife. Its blade was thicker, longer, and sturdier, allowing it to cut through tough tissues like muscle and tendons more effectively while reducing the risk of the edge rolling or the blade snapping.

A fruit knife, by contrast, was thinner and shorter, making it easier to damage and less efficient.

Wei Sen had just finished choosing her knife when the doorbell suddenly rang.

“Who is it?” She set down the cleaver and slowly walked toward the door.

“Hello, is this Ms. Wei? There’s a delivery that requires a signature.”

“Leave it at the door.” Wei Sen didn’t remember buying anything.

“Sorry, it needs to be signed for in person.”

Wei Sen glanced back at the corpse on the dining table. After a moment’s hesitation, she opened the door, using her body to block it from opening fully. From that angle, the door just happened to obstruct the view of the dining table.

Outside stood a Shunfeng delivery courier. He held out an express document envelope. “Please sign here. I just need to take a photo after that.”

Wei Sen calmly signed the package. The courier raised his phone and snapped a picture.

“All set. Thank you!”

Only after watching the courier leave did Wei Sen retreat inside and lock the door behind her.

However, the courier had just stepped into the elevator and was about to upload the photo when he suddenly noticed that one side of the image had faintly captured the dining table inside Wei Sen’s home, and on that table, a pair of legs was actually visible.

He zoomed in. Those legs were covered in hair. They were clearly a man’s.

“Damn, broad daylight and they’re really going at it…”

Before the courier could finish muttering, he noticed a layer of white sheen on the man’s leg hair. It looked like water droplets, yet also like ice crystals.

How could there be ice crystals on a person’s body?

And the color of those feet didn’t seem right either!

…

In the living room, Wei Sen was in no hurry to begin the dissection. Instead, she went to the sofa and examined the document envelope.

Only her address and name were written on the outside. There was no sender information at all.

Besides, this apartment was Li Chang’s marital home. The people who knew its address were all Li Chang’s relatives and friends. Who would be sending documents to her?

Puzzled, Wei Sen opened the envelope. Inside was a…

“Invitation?”

[Invitation

“Congratulations on still being alive.”

“You have passed the test and become a new Order Keeper.

The door of fate has opened for you. Make good use of this opportunity.

Time: 20:00 tonight

Location: No. 312, Tongcheng Avenue, Xi’an District

Task: Collect your Clearance Gift

-Come alone and keep this matter confidential. Burn after reading, or bear the consequences yourself.”]

At the same time, the familiar electronic voice sounded in her mind again.

///Ding~ Congratulations, Host, on achieving Perfect Clearance of the Zhihui Primary School Instance. Merit Points +200. In addition, Host has achieved the Team Amity Achievement. Merit Points +15. Current Merit Points: 710. Host may initiate one Card Draw. Initiate now?///

“Initiate!”

///Drawing card… Congratulations, Host, you have obtained “10-Square-Meter Secret Space” x1. Inside the Secret Space, you are immune to erosion from any Eerie Entity!///
“No time limit?”

///No time limit. A Secret Space can be established anywhere, but the Host can only have one Secret Space. Please use it with caution!///

That was a good thing. If she established a Secret Space in the next Instance, it would be the same as owning an absolutely safe shelter.

With that thought, Wei Sen took the Invitation to the kitchen stove and burned it to ash.

The “God” of the Eerie World and an Invitation from the real world?

Aside from “God,” who else knew she had cleared the Zhihui Primary School Instance?

Who had sent this Invitation?

And what exactly would the “Clearance Reward” be?

Perhaps going to the place written on the Invitation at eight o’clock tonight would give her some answers to those questions.

With that decided, Wei Sen picked up the kitchen knife and returned to the dining table.

The corpse had not completely thawed yet, but the surface had already begun to soften. The kitchen knife was enough to cut it open.

Time ticked by, second by second.

Wei Sen had no experience with autopsies, leaving the dining table in utter chaos. It was far bloodier than the scene where Zhao Yue had been dismembered while running toward the school gate after killing an Eerie Entity.

Wei Sen finally felt a hint of physical discomfort. A person who had once had all four limbs intact had been reduced to a mangled mess.

“Sorry.”

After saying that, she began carefully inspecting the inside of the corpse. The heart, liver, spleen, and lungs showed nothing unusual.

No. Something had to be wrong!

Wei Sen’s blood-covered hands trembled slightly.

Ever since she had woken up in the hospital, she could not remember the past, but everything around her had felt wrong.

Everything seemed ordinary. Everyone had their own role in this society.

Office workers labored like beasts of burden, while capitalists exploited and oppressed people like landlords of the past. Those inside the system held their iron rice bowls and appeared stable, while people at the bottom drifted from place to place, struggling to make a living…

But the more normal it all seemed, the more she felt that everyone was like an NPC in a game.

She also had a strong feeling of being watched, as if a pair of eyes from God’s perspective had been observing her, this insignificant NPC, all along.

She had originally thought all these feelings were just her imagination, until she began noticing what was strange about Li Chang. She started testing him, and in the end, she confirmed that he really was different from her!

Wei Sen inspected the corpse on the dining table from beginning to end once more. When her hand gripped that cold heart, she suddenly felt an odd sensation.

At first, she had thought the heart had not fully thawed, which was why there was a hard lump in it. But June was already hot, and she had turned on the warm air. By now, the corpse had long since thawed completely.

So what was the hard lump in the heart?

Thinking this, Wei Sen forcibly tore the heart open with her bare hands. Inside the heart, connected to flesh and nerves, was a smooth round sphere.

She took the sphere out whole and placed it in her palm, studying it closely. It was only about the size of a marble, completely black with a glossy sheen. It definitely was not something the human body could naturally form, like a stone!

Knock, knock, knock!

The sudden knocking at the door startled Wei Sen.

“Who is it?!” She quickly clenched the Black Ball tightly in her hand.

“Police!” a stern voice came from outside the door. “Open the door and cooperate with our investigation!”

Wei Sen glanced at the bloody mess on the dining table. After a few seconds of hesitation, her gaze locked straight onto the balcony as she considered an escape route.

But this was the thirteenth floor. With her current abilities, barring some miracle, there was no way she could make it from the balcony to the first floor alive.

“We’ve received a report and need to conduct an in-home investigation. Open the door immediately!”

“Ma’am! Open the door immediately!”

“Ma’am, if you continue refusing to cooperate, we’ll break the door down!”

A series of violent impacts sounded from outside the door…
