Chapter 111
Chapter 111
Wei Sen scoffed. Did that thing really think such a cheap trick would fool her?
Lin Xiaoxue and Guo Lan were sharing a room. There was no way Guo Lan would let anything happen to her.
But the thing outside had resorted to such a clumsy tactic, which meant it had no way to unlock the door and come straight in like it had last night.
Looks like the salt and Wolf bone powder had worked!
With that thought, Wei Sen slowly lowered herself and peered out through the crack beneath the door.
Through the gap, she could clearly see the thing outside.
It was still lying flat on the floor, its face drenched in blood, as if the skin had been forcibly torn away. Crimson drops slid down its chin and fell one by one onto the wooden floor. Everywhere it had crawled, it left behind a broken trail of blood.
“Sister Sen… Sister Sen… open the door… it’s me…”
The thing outside was still imitating Lin Xiaoxue’s voice, trying to lure Wei Sen into opening the door. But in the next second, it saw Wei Sen’s cold eyes through the crack, carrying a hint of mockery.
The Faceless Woman stopped pretending altogether and split her mouth into a grin.
As she let out a cackling laugh, that blood-soaked face trembled with it, revealing the stark white bone beneath the muscle.
“You can’t hide…” The Faceless Woman’s pitch-black eyeballs rolled inside the exposed sockets. “Join us. Stay in this beautiful world with us…”
Beautiful world?
Wei Sen gave a cold smile, rose, and returned to the bed.
No matter how beautiful a world that did not belong to her was, she would never stay.
Besides, she had not the slightest interest in becoming the subordinate of that so-called “Sovereign”!
Once Wei Sen confirmed the Faceless Woman could not get in, she calmly placed the Ghost Axe on the bedside table and lay down.
Lin Ze also returned to bed. Neither of them had any interest in paying attention to the female ghost outside anymore.
Lin Ze said, “You still have one question.”
“I’ll save it for next time.”
“I’m afraid there won’t be a next time.”
The Eerie World had countless Instances. He did not think he and this woman would ever meet a second time.
Wei Sen closed her eyes and said indifferently, “There will be a chance eventually.”
If there wasn’t, then so be it. It wasn’t as if she was particularly interested in seeing him again anyway.
Lin Ze was quietly puzzled. She seemed completely uninterested in him as a person. Did she even think asking three questions was too much?
“Wait.” Wei Sen suddenly remembered.
There was one question she had wanted to know the moment she first saw Lin Ze’s name on the Hero Ranking. Now that the man himself was right in front of her, she had nearly forgotten it.
A faint smile flashed across Lin Ze’s lips, but he deliberately kept up his aloof act. “Go ahead.”
“With Merit Points as high as yours, you still haven’t met the conditions to see God? Or rather… have you ever seen God again?”
Lin Ze did not answer right away.
That question… was rather complicated.
When he first arrived in the Eerie World, he had been like every other Order Keeper, frantically grinding Instances in order to see God again and have his wish granted.
One year, five years, ten years. He had carried that beautiful hope with him, carrying the thought of reviving Ningning as he cleared Instance after Instance without ever knowing exhaustion.
Until his Merit Points rose so far above everyone else’s that he stood alone in first place, and he realized that on the entire ranking, aside from a sparse handful of names that had always remained, the rest had changed batch after batch.
Yet he had no way of knowing whether those people had died, or whether they had left the Eerie World after seeing God and having their wishes granted.
And so, he began to doubt God’s promise…
Then he began searching for the truth of the Eerie World. But the more clues he uncovered, the more new mysteries appeared alongside them…
“Hm?” Wei Sen prompted when Lin Ze remained silent for a long time.
Lin Ze came back to himself, his tone heavy. “I haven’t seen it again.”
“God once said it would appear when one’s Merit Points were enough to measure the value of their wish.” Wei Sen looked at Lin Ze suspiciously. “Is your wish simply too grand, or…”
She trailed off.
Lin Ze looked back at her as well.
She had very keenly noticed the crux of the matter-
Could accumulating enough Merit Points truly let someone see God again?
Lin Ze still had not found the answer. Or rather, he still could not be certain of it.
He had a guess in his heart. But if his guess was true, then this world… or perhaps the entire universe, would be overturned!
“The truth is far more complicated than either of us imagined. I’d like to find someone to ask, too-why all of this is happening.” A trace of helplessness and self-mockery hid in Lin Ze’s voice.
The corner of Wei Sen’s mouth lifted slightly.
A truth that even the famous Legend Lin didn’t know…
The path she was walking suddenly seemed a little more interesting.
Early the next morning, a faint glow appeared on the distant horizon.
Wei Sen woke earlier than Lin Ze. She glanced at the time. It was only 6:11.
After learning what rules governed the Eerie Entity’s killings, Wei Sen became much bolder in her actions.
Don’t break the rules. Stay clear when the Red Door descends. Keep away from aggressive Eerie Shadows. As long as she did those three things, she could guarantee her own safety to a large extent.
Lin Ze had also mentioned last night that no matter what the conditions for Perfect Clearance were, they could only be achieved after restoring at least ninety percent of the Instance’s story.
The condition for achieving Perfect Clearance in the current Instance was obtaining the “Divine Gift.”
If Wei Sen wanted to achieve Perfect Clearance, she had to reconstruct the truth of the Instance and figure out what the real “Divine Gift” was.
At this point, Wei Sen wanted Perfect Clearance not only for more Merit Points, but also because she wanted to find another way to meet God.
Or if there were a way to meet that mysterious “Sovereign,” she would surely be able to learn more of the truth about this world.
After getting up, Wei Sen first checked the name list in the main group chat.
Five people had died last night.
They were a man and a woman from Blue Team, the twin sisters, and Yang Yan from Red Team’s girl group.
Surprisingly, Xia Susu was not on last night’s death list.
Wei Sen recalled the room assignments from the first day they checked in.
The man and woman had shared one room, the twin sisters had shared one room, and Yang Yan had shared a room with her captain, Meng Zhenzhen.
Xia Susu hadn’t died. Had she used an Anomalous Artifact to scrape by, or had she found a new roommate?
Wei Sen stared thoughtfully at Meng Zhenzhen’s name, then got up and quickly washed.
Why Xia Susu was still alive didn’t matter. Right now, Wei Sen had something more important to confirm.
Wei Sen left the room. The corridor lights were dim and yellow, and her footsteps sounded especially clear in the quiet morning.
Bloodstains from where the Faceless Woman had crawled last night still remained in the hallway, which meant Meiya had not yet come to clean up the traces.
Wei Sen was thinking this when Meiya, rushing up from the corner of the second floor, crashed straight into her.
“Sorry!” Meiya apologized in a panic, then hurried upstairs without stopping, heading straight for the fourth floor.
The rules had stated that employees worked from 6:30 to 20:00.
Wei Sen glanced at the time. It was only 6:19. Work hours hadn’t started yet, yet Meiya had already come to the inn.
Wei Sen arrived in the inn lobby. The lobby was empty in the early morning. She headed straight for the front door.
The door stood wide open, and a freezing wind howled outside.
At the entrance lay another bloodstained ice rose and a wooden gift box.
Wei Sen stepped forward to examine them.
When she opened the gift box, inside was a fresh human face dripping with blood-long lashes, full lips, fair skin, and features still faintly recognizable.
It was Yang Yan.
Among the five people who had died last night, the man and woman had been hunted down by the Faceless Woman after the Red Door appeared. Their bodies should still be in the forest.
But Yang Yan’s facial skin had been given as a gift, proving she had been killed by the Skeleton Monster.
As for the twin sisters, their cause of death was still unknown for now.
Wei Sen put the gift box back where it had been and was just about to leave when she noticed something strange.
There were no footprints outside the inn, nor any traces of the Skeleton Monster crawling past.
It wasn’t snowing heavily outside at the moment, so footprints couldn’t have been covered up in such a short time. That meant this gift had been sitting here for at least more than an hour.
The Skeleton Monster’s timing and route could be explained, but… there were no footprints inside the inn either.
Then what was with Meiya going upstairs just now?
Had she actually arrived at the inn even earlier?
But if she had already been here, why hadn’t the blood in the hallway been cleaned up?
Or was it that Meiya had never left the inn after nightfall at all?
She had been here the entire time!
