Chapter 73

In the blink of an eye, a hand reached out from the side and firmly grabbed Nan Mu’s ankle.

Wen Miao looked back and saw Wen Xin, who was grimacing in pain. He had both hands wrapped around Nan Mu’s right ankle, his feet braced hard against the curb at the edge of the ground, trying to pull Nan Mu back.

Wen Miao wanted to help, but then she saw Nurse Xiao Ai rushing toward Wen Xin again. She seemed intent on pushing Wen Xin over the edge as well.

Scared half to death, Wen Miao bolted toward Nurse Xiao Ai. Using the momentum from her run, she tackled the nurse around the waist, and they both hit the ground with a heavy thud.

===

Xiao Ai’s attention had been entirely on Wen Xin. Caught off guard by Wen Miao’s sudden tackle, she was pinned and slammed into the ground without any chance to defend herself. Her head struck the floor with a bang, and her vision momentarily went black.

Immediately after, memories flooded back, and images flashed through her mind. She remembered the teacher who had picked her up from a trash heap and raised her…

She violently shoved Wen Miao off her and stared with bloodshot eyes at Wen Xin, who was desperately trying to pull Nan Mu up.

Kill him!

Gritting her teeth, she scrambled up from the ground. She had only taken two steps when she felt a sharp pain in her waist. It felt as if two massive magnetic fields were squeezing from the bottom up and from both sides toward the center of her brain. Her teeth chattered uncontrollably, and her vision began to swim. She looked down and saw Wen Miao holding a stun baton against her waist.

She tried to say something, but her vision failed, and she collapsed into unconsciousness.

===

Before coming here, Wen Miao had already anticipated that Nan Mu would be in a precarious situation, so how could she have come unprepared?

After her last encounter with the Motorcycle Man, Wen Tangtang had bought her a high-voltage stun baton for self-defense. However, she never expected that the first time she used it would be in a situation like this.

“Wen Miao-come help. I can’t hold on anymore,” Wen Xin squeezed the words out through grit teeth.

Wen Miao dropped the stun baton and rushed over. She grabbed Nan Mu’s other leg and, working together with Wen Xin, managed to pull Nan Mu’s lower legs back inside the railing.

Their strength exhausted, the two of them leaned their weight against Nan Mu’s calves to catch their breath, planning to give it one final, coordinated push to pull him up for good.

Because Nan Mu was hanging upside down over the railing, it was difficult for him to exert any force himself. Combined with the wound on his waist, his strength was constantly draining away.

Wen Miao said, “I’ll count to three, and we’ll pull together.”

Wen Xin pressed his body against Nan Mu’s legs and wiped the sweat from his palms onto his clothes. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

Wen Miao took a deep breath. “Three, two, one!”

In an instant, the two of them hauled the majority of Nan Mu’s body back inside the railing.

Now that he had some leverage, Nan Mu clutched the wound on his waist and gritted his teeth. Relying purely on his core strength, he performed a crunch, hooked his hands onto the railing, and pulled himself up into a sitting position on the ledge.

Wen Xin froze for a moment when he finally got a clear look at Nan Mu’s face.

Wen Miao, meanwhile, finally burst into tears. Before she could even ask if he was okay, she felt a massive shove against her back. Caught off guard, she lunged forward. Nan Mu hadn’t even had the chance to climb down from the railing before she collided with him, knocking him backward.

In her panic, Wen Miao grabbed onto Nan Mu tightly, trying to stop his fall. But Nan Mu was falling back too fast; instead of stopping him, she was pulled over the railing with him.

“Wen Miao!”

Wen Xin didn’t know where he found the courage, but the moment he saw Wen Miao falling, he instinctively lunged out over the railing.

He managed to catch Wen Miao by the skin of his teeth, but he couldn’t possibly hold both Wen Miao and Nan Mu on his own.

At that critical moment, someone suddenly grabbed Wen Miao around the waist. Wen Xin looked back and saw Nurse Xiao Ai holding onto Wen Miao, pulling back with all her might.

Wen Xin was stunned, but he didn’t have time to overthink it. He reached out, grabbed Wen Miao by the collar, and with a great heave, pulled the two of them back inside the railing.

The group collapsed onto the ground.

Wen Xin panted heavily, his taut nerves finally beginning to relax. But when he turned his head and saw Nurse Lin standing there like a statue, the calm he had just found vanished, replaced by a surge of fury.
He barked a question at the woman, “What were you just doing?”

Nurse Lin stammered as she pointed at Nurse Xiao Ai, “She… she… she suddenly woke up… I just got scared…”

Wen Xin shifted his gaze to Nurse Xiao Ai. She had just saved Wen Miao, but at the very beginning, wasn’t she…

He couldn’t quite make sense of the current situation and could only turn his eyes toward Wen Miao.

Wen Miao was terrified by the rapid succession of events. She sat on the ground for a long while before realizing her hand was stinging with a burning pain. When she lifted it to look, she found her hand covered in abrasions and drenched in blood.

She stared blankly at her hand for a moment, but the first thought that surfaced in her mind was: *Do scrapes bleed this much?*

Her dull gaze slowly moved to Nan Mu, only then realizing that a pool of blood was spreading beneath him as he slumped on the floor.

“Nan… Nan Mu…” Wen Miao scrambled over in a panic. She lifted Nan Mu’s shirt and discovered a massive gash on his waist. Blood was gushing out incessantly, like water pouring from a slashed plastic bottle.

“Doctor! Get a doctor!” Wen Miao pressed down hard on Nan Mu’s wound with her hands, trying to stem the flow of blood, while shouting over her shoulder at Nurse Lin, “Hurry downstairs and call the doctors!”

Nurse Lin stood up clumsily. She seemed paralyzed by fear, failing to turn and run downstairs immediately. Instead, she looked hesitantly at Nurse Xiao Ai, who was standing nearby. “What… what about her?”

Wen Miao had no mental energy left to worry about Nurse Xiao Ai. She desperately called out Nan Mu’s name, but his earlier act of self-preservation had clearly been the final arrow of a spent bow. His consciousness had faded, and he gave no response.

Nurse Lin knelt beside Wen Miao and peeled back Nan Mu’s eyelid. His pupils were beginning to dilate; it looked like he had lost nearly a thousand milliliters of blood. However, they were in a hospital; he could still be saved with a timely transfusion. It was just that…

She looked up at Wen Xin, who had found some rope and was currently tying up Nurse Xiao Ai. “Young man, hurry downstairs to the ER and get help!”

“What?” Wen Xin blanked for a second.

“He’s losing blood too fast. This can’t go on. I have to perform emergency first aid on him. You get down there and call for people! The ER is on the first floor! Go!”

Nurse Lin’s tone was grave and urgent. Wen Xin didn’t have time to overthink it. He picked up the stun baton from the floor, handed it to Wen Miao for protection, and then sprinted downstairs.

The emergency room was on the first floor. Just as he reached it, he heard a sudden wave of screams erupting outside.

Someone rushed in from the outside, shouting at the medical staff, “Someone jumped! Someone fell from the building!”

The medic Wen Xin was pulling on was also distracted by the commotion and instinctively asked, “What did you just say?”

“Someone… someone jumped from the roof… I think it was a woman.”

Wen Xin’s skin crawled as a sense of foreboding instantly gripped his heart.

A woman? Who? Was it Nurse Xiao Ai?

The noisy chatter from the surroundings flooded his ears.

“My god, scared the life out of me. Did you see clearly?”

“How would I dare look? It was a bloody mess…”

“One of them looked like a nurse, did you see?”

“I think so. That outfit was definitely a nurse’s uniform…”

“Both of them were nurses?”

“One was, the other wasn’t. Anyway, the other one didn’t look like she was in a nurse’s uniform…”

“Right, the other one wasn’t! I bet it was a doctor-patient conflict…”

“What kind of conflict is so bad they have to jump together?”

“That scene was truly horrific!”

“I’m going to be traumatized for life…”

“What a tragedy…”
