Chapter 62
Chapter 62
Hospital medical records are always documented. Inpatient records are kept for thirty years, and even standard outpatient records are preserved for over a year. Therefore, as long as they could pull the hospital’s outpatient logs, they would be able to identify which doctor had treated Su Yu back then. However, medical records are private and cannot be accessed at will, so the two of them pinned their hopes on Wen Xin.
When Wen Miao returned to the university, Wen Xin wasn’t in the Materials Science department’s research lab. Instead, he was helping Wen Tangtang with some bacterial isolation and cultivation.
It seemed Wen Tangtang was throwing a fit because some colony wouldn’t grow.
The moment Wen Xin saw Wen Miao, he looked like he’d seen a savior. With a look of pure exhaustion, he dumped Wen Tangtang onto Wen Miao.
“I have things to do, I’m leaving.”
With that, he bolted without looking back, leaving Wen Miao without even a chance to say she was looking for him.
Watching his retreating figure disappear into the distance, Wen Miao didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “What did you make him do to make him that scared?”
Wen Tangtang sighed. Rather than explaining, she countered with a question, “What have you been busy with lately? You run off the second class ends.”
“Just… some stuff.” Fearing Wen Tangtang would press for details, Wen Miao quickly changed the subject. “Do you need help with anything?”
But Wen Tangtang didn’t take the bait. She just stared Wen Miao down.
Wen Miao felt her skin crawl under the scrutiny and couldn’t help but nudge her friend’s waist with her elbow.
Wen Tangtang suddenly pulled Wen Miao into a hug, a teasing smile on her face. “Ooh, ooh, ooh! Something’s not right! You’re acting very suspicious!”
Wen Miao stayed stubborn. “What’s suspicious?”
“Tsk, look at you. You have the look of someone who’s fallen head over heels in love,” Wen Tangtang teased.
Wen Miao immediately protested, “Don’t talk nonsense… I’m out investigating a case.”
“Didn’t you say that guy on the motorcycle is already dead? What’s left to investigate?”
“Investigating why he was targeting me, of course.”
Wen Tangtang seemed somewhat convinced. “That’s true. That bastard… he got off easy by dying so quickly… So, have you found anything?”
Wen Miao shook her head. “No major progress yet.”
Hearing this, Wen Tangtang tossed the thing in her hand onto the table and looked at Wen Miao seriously. “Then tell me about it. Is there anything I can help with?”
“There’s nothing I need help with for now.” Seeing Wen Tangtang’s face cloud over with displeasure, Wen Miao hurriedly added, “Don’t worry-when I do need help, I won’t be polite. I’ll definitely come to you immediately.”
“Then why won’t you tell me now?” Wen Tangtang sounded annoyed. “There’s clearly someone bad acting against you in the shadows, yet you’re still staying out there all by yourself… Wen Xin already said it-you even skipped your classes yesterday? You used to be the type who spent every spare second reading; what’s going on with you now?”
Wen Miao gave a sheepish smile. “It’s not like I’m skipping class to go play… I just want to look into Gu Zhishu’s matter… We knew each other back at the Orphanage, after all.”
Wen Tangtang wasn’t very familiar with Gu Zhishu. She had been sickly as a child, and only Wen Xin had been willing to play with her, so she didn’t have the same feelings about Gu Zhishu as Wen Miao did-after all, Wen Miao and Gu Zhishu had lived in the Gu Family household together for several years.
Wen Tangtang sighed. “It’s not that I’m trying to stop you from investigating… I’m just afraid you’ll get hurt! You’re out there off-campus by yourself. If something happens, I won’t even know.”
As she spoke, Wen Tangtang suddenly seemed to make up her mind. “How about this: starting today, wherever you go, you take me with you. Forget everything else-just with my build alone, I’m definitely tougher than you.”
Wen Tangtang wasn’t actually fat. She’d just had a chubby, round face since she was little, so people assumed she was. Even so, she really was more “solid” than Wen Miao. Wen Miao was too thin, so ever since childhood, Wen Tangtang had always liked to boast that she was stronger.
Wen Miao knew that when Wen Tangtang was young, she was often bullied and mocked for being sickly-called a burden-so she was very afraid of anyone denying that she was healthy. Wen Miao usually let her have it.
Wen Miao hadn’t expected Wen Tangtang to bring it up again now, and she couldn’t help feeling both touched and amused. She remembered that time the three of them had gone to Su Yu’s house at night-she had nearly been strangled to death by Nan Mu upstairs, while Wen Tangtang and Wen Xin were downstairs, completely unaware.
“No need!” Wen Miao refused righteously. “It’s precisely because it’s dangerous that I don’t want you to come… I don’t want to drag you into this.”
“What do you mean, ‘getting us involved’?” Wen Tangtang grew even more indignant. “Have you forgotten the oath we made when we were kids?”
The oath Wen Tangtang referred to was the wish the three of them had made while celebrating their fifteenth birthdays at the Orphanage. Back then, Wen Xin had decided to separate from the other two to attend a different high school in order to secure a scholarship. It was the first time the three of them had ever been apart.
But they had sworn an oath under the starlit sky.
Wen Tangtang, Wen Xin, and Wen Miao-the three of them would be family for life. No matter what happened, no matter what disaster they encountered, they would absolutely, definitely never give up on or abandon each other.
“Of course I haven’t forgotten!”
“Then why won’t you take me? Why won’t you take Wen Xin? We can help you!”
*But the problem is, I don’t know how to let you guys meet Nan Mu,* Wen Miao grumbled inwardly.
“You have to take at least one of us!”
“And do what?” Wen Miao couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “Help me dial the police when we run into the Motorcycle Man?”
Wen Tangtang choked for a moment. “Then take Wen Xin! Either way, having him is better than you having no help at all, right?”
“I don’t need him. I have help! He’s much stronger than Wen Xin!”
Wen Tangtang’s nagging had made Wen Miao’s head throb, and in her haste, the words slipped out. By the time she snapped back to her senses, Wen Tangtang’s face had already shifted into a teasing smirk.
“Oh~, I knew it. You’ve got someone on the outside, don’t you?”
“What do you mean ‘on the outside’?” Wen Miao’s face flushed. “You make it sound like I’ve got someone at school too.”
“Why wouldn’t you?” Wen Tangtang teased as she pulled on her gloves. “There’s that Nan Mu…”
Wen Miao’s heart skipped a beat, her eyes widening in a fright. It was only after hearing the rest of Wen Tangtang’s sentence that she realized her friend was talking about the present-day Nan Mu.
“The Nan Mu in my class… Sigh, how pitiful. It seems the King of Xiang is dreaming of love, but the Goddess remains indifferent.”
Wen Miao pursed her lips and remained silent.
“Forget it. Since you don’t like him, I should probably pass your message along to him sooner rather than later. It’ll save him from hanging around you all the time and annoying you… Actually, there are tons of girls chasing him. He is the school hunk of A University of Science and Technology, after all. I think he should just pick one from that crowd; there’s no need for him to hang himself from a single tree.”
Wen Miao: “???”
She feigned indifference and said, “Why are you meddling in his business… Maybe he has unique taste, and none of those girls are his type?”
“What do you know? A persistent man can wear down any woman’s defenses,” Wen Tangtang said, looking like an expert on the subject. “You have no idea. The belle of the Art Department next door knows I’m on good terms with Nan Mu, and she even asked me to deliver a love letter for her.”
“You… you delivered it?”
“Of course not! Do I look stupid?” Wen Tangtang countered instinctively, but she quickly caught herself. “Before, I was thinking about keeping the good stuff within the family-a top-tier guy like that should obviously be saved for you! But since you don’t like him, I’ll go find that love letter and hand it over. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be helping a great romance blossom.”
“How long has it been since she wrote that letter? What if… what if she doesn’t like Nan Mu anymore?”
“Impossible.” Wen Tangtang spoke with absolute certainty while watching the petri dish in front of her. “Just a few days ago, she was still secretly fishing for info from me… It actually made me feel a bit guilty. Oh! It was last week, when we were talking and she ran over to say hi-that was the belle of the Art Department.”
Wen Miao remembered her immediately. The girl had a small, delicate face but was strikingly beautiful-the kind of girl who instantly triggered a man’s protective and possessive instincts.
“There was even a post by a passerby on the school forum. The comments were full of guys saying there’s no one she can’t catch, only those she doesn’t want. With her looks, as long as she puts in a little effort, any guy would fall head over heels for her. I feel like once I deliver this letter and the truth is out, there’s a ninety-nine percent chance they’ll get together! Hiss-does the Art Department have night classes? I think they’re in the same building as us. I’ll head back to the dorm later to grab that letter.”
Wen Miao objected sharply, “You are not allowed to take it!”
Wen Tangtang was utterly bewildered. “Huh???”
