Chapter 68
Chapter 68
If it weren’t for the fact that it was currently night, Nan Mu definitely would have jumped up immediately to investigate Su Yu’s background.
He reached for his phone on the bedside table and checked the time; it was already past two in the morning. Normally, he would have been in a deep sleep by now.
He knew he should hurry up and rest so he could wake up early the next day with enough energy to look into Su Yu’s past. But now, all sorts of thoughts were flooding his mind, making it impossible for him to fall asleep.
Tossing and turning for who knew how long, just as he was finally drifting off into a daze, he suddenly heard a slow clicking sound coming from the door of his hospital room. The sound was very faint, but it was exceptionally clear in the dead silence of the night.
Nan Mu, who had been half-asleep, snapped wide awake.
Was it a nurse doing rounds?
He wondered to himself, but because he usually slept like the dead, he wasn’t sure if they performed rounds throughout the night.
The door was pushed open. Although he didn’t open his eyes, Nan Mu could sense the change in light against his eyelids. The light from the hallway filtered through the crack in the door, casting a long, wide band of light across the room.
The band of light swept over his eyelids, gradually widening, then slid back down before darkness returned. This meant someone had pushed the door open and then closed it. Moreover, the person hadn’t just peeked inside-they had entered the room.
Nan Mu’s body gradually tensed. He could feel the person’s footsteps slowly approaching.
He clenched his fists, his body beneath the covers poised for action. If someone were to turn on the light right now, they would see Nan Mu looking like a crouching lion, ready to pounce.
The intruder walked up to his bedside. Nan Mu thought they were coming for him, but to his surprise, the person seemed to stop abruptly.
Nan Mu didn’t know what they intended to do, but given the situation, he decided to wait and see what their actual goal was.
The person stood there for about ten seconds before Nan Mu heard a rustling sound coming from his bedside stand again.
Was this… a thief?
Nan Mu was somewhat stunned, but he remained still, pretending to be fast asleep. The person rummaged through the stand for several minutes without leaving. The faint sounds of someone searching for something echoed in his ears.
This didn’t seem like a thief stealing things; it felt more like they were looking for something specific.
Looking for something…
Nan Mu’s heart skipped a beat. Whenever he slept, he always left his phone charging on the bedside stand, but just now… he had taken it down to check the time.
His phone was sitting right next to his pillow, but because of his defensive posture, his hands were under the covers.
He hesitated, calculating the probability of success if he reached out now to pull the phone under the covers without being noticed…
Just as he was debating whether or not to take the risk, the phone next to his pillow seemed to receive a push notification, and the screen suddenly lit up.
Nan Mu: “…”
The sudden glow of the screen seemed to startle the intruder as well. Nan Mu heard the person’s breathing hitch for a moment. The rapid, shallow breaths made Nan Mu realize that the intruder was a woman.
But the tension in Nan Mu’s mind didn’t relax just because the intruder was female; instead, it grew even tighter.
If the person was coming for him, they should have known about his skills. Knowing his capabilities and still daring to send a woman could only mean that she was exceptionally skilled or possessed some extraordinary advantage.
He entered a state of full defensive readiness, waiting for her to make a move so he could immediately seize and subdue her.
However, it was unclear whether the person was observing him or something else. After about a dozen seconds, once the light from the phone screen had automatically timed out, Nan Mu felt a slight breeze brush past his ear. It was the person picking up the phone from beside his pillow.
Nan Mu planned to wait until she turned to leave, then leap up and pin her from behind.
To his surprise, she didn’t move after taking the phone. She seemed to be standing right there, scrolling through it.
Nan Mu was somewhat perplexed; he thought he had heard the sound of the device unlocking just now. But… did she know his passcode? How did she unlock his phone so easily?
As he thought about it, he suddenly remembered that he seemed to have been exceptionally lethargic over the past two days.
His heart chilled.
That was right-when exactly did he start becoming so sleepy? Listless during the day and falling into a deep, heavy slumber at night. Was it really just because he was exhausted?
The intruder was so bold likely because they were certain he wouldn’t wake up today…
But…
Wait, why hadn’t he fallen into a dead sleep today?
Was there something he had done differently today compared to before?
Nan Mu silently reviewed the day’s events in his mind, but he still couldn’t pinpoint any differences…
While he was lost in thought, the person beside him moved again.
She seemed to place the phone back on his nightstand. Immediately after, Nan Mu heard soft footsteps gradually receding.
Was she leaving? It seemed this person was only here to check his phone? But why? Was she monitoring him? Or was she trying to use him… to monitor someone else’s movements?

Nan Mu heard the sound of the door handle turning softly. He cracked his eyelids open slightly, and in the instant the door was pulled open, the light that came flooding in allowed him to see the person’s face clearly.
Dressed as a nurse and not particularly tall, she turned around for a moment, and Nan Mu saw her with perfect clarity.
It was actually her-Nurse Xiao Ai.
A nurse, seventh-floor neurology, had once taken care of Gu Zhishu…
Nurse Xiao Ai matched every single condition Nan Mu had suspected of the culprit.
Someone who could enter and leave Gu Zhishu’s ward at will, and the one who had deleted the text messages between Gu Zhishu and Lin Zhengfeng after the former’s departure.
Someone stationed in the seventh-floor neurology department for years, who could easily guide Su Yu to Doctor Jia’s office when he came for an examination.
She was even in charge of his own hospital bed…
The killer had been right by his side all along! It was just…
He had discovered it too late.
