Chapter 61

Wen Miao managed to get the name of the hospital where the physical examinations were being held from the young man.

However, when the two of them looked at the name of the hospital, they both couldn’t help but gasp-the First Affiliated Hospital of A University of Science and Technology Medical School, the very same hospital where Nan Mu was currently staying.

“After all that work, we ended up right back at this hospital.”

Upon returning to the ward, Wen Miao still felt a bit frustrated thinking about it, feeling as though she had exerted a great deal of effort only to achieve a redundant result.

Nan Mu, on the other hand, remained quite calm. “Look at it from another perspective. At least the current situation is somewhat in our favor. We’re already familiar with this hospital’s environment, and since we’re right here, investigating will certainly be much easier than going to a strange hospital.”

He had been anxious to be discharged before, but now he felt he could easily stay for a few more days.

Wen Miao thought about it and realized he had a point, which improved her mood slightly. “So, what should we do next?”

“Don’t worry. Isn’t that guy coming this afternoon? Once he arrives, we’ll find a way to check the contents of his physical exam.”

…

After finishing lunch, Wen Miao arrived at the hospital’s health checkup center early to wait for the young man, planning to stage a ‘chance’ encounter. It wasn’t until around two o’clock that she finally spotted him.

The young man was holding a physical examination form, reading it as he walked. Wen Miao pretended she had just arrived and intentionally moved toward his path. As expected, the young man, who was looking down at his papers, bumped right into her.

When he looked up and saw it was Wen Miao, he looked pleasantly surprised. “Oh… what a coincidence.”

Wen Miao feigned surprise and greeted him warmly. Looking at the papers in his hand, she asked, “You’ve already picked up your exam form?”

“Yeah.” The young man didn’t suspect a thing and even offered helpfully, “Did you just get here? Go straight ahead and turn right; that’s where you collect the forms…”

“Got it, got it.” Wen Miao acted like an old friend and reached out to snag the form from his hand. “What kind of checkup items are on here?”

“It seems to be just the standard ones.”

Though the young man found her behavior a bit odd, he didn’t stop her. He had just arrived and hadn’t started the exams yet, so the form was just a standard list without any private information.

He even nudged the form toward Wen Miao. “How about I go with you to pick one up?”

While perfunctorily declining his kindness, Wen Miao quickly scanned the list of tests on the form.

Sure enough, there were no items related to brain scans or neurological examinations.

…

When Wen Miao returned to the seventh floor, she saw Nan Mu wandering around the corridor.

Curious, she went over and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Observing.”

“Observing what?”

Wen Miao stood behind him and peered in the direction he was looking. People were coming and going in the hospital, and it was quite noisy; she couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Nan Mu didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he asked her about the physical exam report first.

“It’s just as you thought. There are no items related to the brain on their examination forms.”

Although Nan Mu had anticipated this, his feelings were still complicated now that the answer was revealed.

Wen Miao asked, “Who do you think it is? The school? Hongyun Pharmaceutical? Or someone from the hospital?”

“I don’t know. But the further down the line they are, the more suspicious they become. The school has no way to control which specific items are included in a corporate entry physical, but the hospital is different. It’s far too easy for them to take someone aside for an extra test.”

Wen Miao didn’t entirely agree with his view. “That might not be the case. Wouldn’t Su Yu have been suspicious? If he suddenly had one more test than everyone else, he’d surely find it strange… Or, did everyone in his batch have that item?”

“Perhaps… but it’s also possible they only arranged that extra test for him alone.”
Wen Miao was about to argue that Su Yu couldn’t possibly be that gullible, but Nan Mu provided a timely example.

“Take that young man you just met, for instance. If I’m not mistaken, he probably still doesn’t realize you aren’t actually his coworker.”

Wen Miao: “…”

“He’s a fresh college graduate with very little experience or worldly wisdom. This is his first job. It’s perfectly normal for him not to know exactly what a pre-employment physical entails-whether it’s missing a test or having an extra one. Plus, at that time, he probably wouldn’t have been on guard against hospital staff or company personnel… At the very least, I don’t think it’s strange that he was tricked into doing an extra examination.”

“If it happened at the hospital, could the person who tricked him be connected to the one who stole Gu Zhishu’s phone and deleted his chat logs with Lin Zhengfeng?”

“It’s possible. And to trick Su Yu into an examination, the hospital would need at least two people involved… a doctor and a nurse.”

Wen Miao arched an eyebrow. “How did you reach that conclusion?”

“Yu Jingtong said Su Yu went to her father’s clinic for a follow-up, which confirmed there was nothing wrong with his brain. That means the scans Su Yu had taken were definitely fine. Therefore, the doctor who looked at those scans and concluded he was ill must have been lying through his teeth…”

Realization dawned on Wen Miao. “So the doctor who reviewed Su Yu’s scans is definitely compromised! But what about the nurse?”

“Hospitals have so many departments. How could anyone be sure Su Yu would register for neurosurgery or neurology? Even if they knew the department, how could they ensure he’d end up in that specific doctor’s office? You have to realize, they only had one shot at this; it had to be foolproof. Otherwise, once Su Yu was diagnosed as healthy, he’d never come back for those types of tests again. And the culprit couldn’t possibly bribe every single doctor in the hospital just for Su Yu, right?”

“So, they needed someone to guide Su Yu to that specific doctor’s office at the right moment…”

“Exactly. A nurse can’t leave their post for long. Therefore, this compromised nurse must be assigned to the seventh floor and have a highly mobile role. That’s the only way they could spend enough time in the hallways or a specific spot to observe the patients coming and going on the seventh floor.”

Wen Miao finally understood why Nan Mu had been pacing back and forth near the stairwell when she came upstairs. He had been observing the nurses on the seventh floor to see which position or job type most likely belonged to the person he suspected.

However, there was still one thing Wen Miao couldn’t figure out. “But why? Why go to all that trouble just to get Su Yu to take a physical? Why make up a fake illness out of thin air? What’s the motive? To scam him out of medical fees?”

Despite the solemn and heavy atmosphere, Nan Mu couldn’t help but be amused by Wen Miao.

The tension in the hospital room eased slightly as Nan Mu continued, “There’s definitely something complex behind this. Why did they do it? And what is their criteria for choosing a target? Logically, if they know Gu Zhishu well enough to get a hold of his phone, they should easily know about the friendship between Gu Zhishu and Su Yu. For such a low-probability event to happen to two people who know each other, it would be very easy to expose. The culprit couldn’t be unaware of that, so why did they insist on choosing Su Yu as the next target? There must be a common thread between them.”

Wen Miao looked thoughtful. “So there must be a commonality between Su Yu and Gu Zhishu-a specific trait that makes them targets.”

Nan Mu hummed in agreement, but he kept half of his thoughts to himself.

This common thread wasn’t just shared by Su Yu and Gu Zhishu; it was something that Su Yu, Gu Zhishu, and Wen Miao all had in common.
