Chapter 150

Wen Tangtang, Wen Xin, Old Cai, and the others were hauled back to the police station for questioning.

Old Cai and his men tried again and again to argue that they had merely wanted to invite Wen Tangtang and Wen Xin to Shanshui Villa, a charming estate with beautiful scenery, as guests.

But at the time, Wen Tangtang’s clothes had been in disarray, her face bruised and swollen, while a group of burly men had been gripping her by the neck and holding her firmly at the doorway. Everyone in the police car had seen it with their own eyes.

Faced with a scene like that, the police naturally refused to believe their excuses.

Still, Wen Tangtang and the others were only held for a day in the end. Even if assault and unlawful detention were proven, under the current criminal law, those charges were not considered especially serious. So Old Cai and his people remained utterly fearless.

Before long, however, they would no longer be able to laugh.

Because Wen Miao had brought Cheng Jiamin to file a police report.

===

When Wen Tangtang and Wen Xin came out, they saw Wen Miao standing across from the police station with someone wearing a black cap and a mask.

Wen Tangtang stormed over in a rage. “Wen Miao, do you have any idea how awful Nan Mu was? Look at my face!”

When Wen Tangtang was running over from across the street, Wen Miao had not noticed anything at first. Only when she got close did Wen Miao realize that her face was covered in injuries.

There was an abrasion on her forehead, with faint traces of blood still seeping from the wound.

Her left eyelid was purplish-red, clearly the mark of having been punched.

A ring of bluish-purple bruising circled her neck. On closer inspection, one could even make out marks shaped like fingers.

On top of that, she had been wearing white that day, so the front of her clothes looked as if it had been clawed by a little kitten, smeared here and there with red and black, utterly filthy.

Wen Xin, who stood behind Wen Tangtang, was not much better off. He was dirty all over too, just not as badly injured as she was.

Wen Miao’s heart already ached at the sight of Wen Tangtang. When she heard what Wen Tangtang said, her expression changed in shock.

“Nan Mu? Nan Mu hit you?” Wen Miao turned to look at Nan Mu, unable to keep a hint of blame from her eyes. “Even if it was to get them arrested, there was no need to hit Tang Tang on purpose.”

Nan Mu did not know whether to laugh or cry. “I’ve been wronged to death. How could I be the one who hit her? Wen Tangtang, why are you framing me?”

Wen Tangtang looked Nan Mu up and down. Seeing that he was completely unharmed made the wounds on her face hurt even more. She gave an angry snort. “Anyway, it has something to do with you.”

Nan Mu was not happy about that. Wen Tangtang was definitely taking revenge by deliberately slandering him in front of Wen Miao.

He tugged at Wen Miao, whose attention was entirely on Wen Tangtang, pointed at each wound on Wen Tangtang’s body, and explained them one by one.

The scrape on her forehead-she had gotten it when those people chased her from behind, pinned her to the ground, and her head knocked against something.

The eye that looked like it had taken a punch-after Wen Tangtang was pinned down, she tried to break free and started flailing wildly, so someone punched her.

The bruising around her neck-that was from someone grabbing her by the throat while dragging her up from the ground.

…

Nan Mu said, “At most, the only thing on your whole body that can be blamed on me is your dirty clothes, right? And that was only because I was trying to save you, so I made you jump down from upstairs…”

Wen Tangtang stiffened her neck and glared at Nan Mu. “Fine, you didn’t hit me. But this is still a case of ‘you may not have killed Boren, but Boren died because of you.'”

Nan Mu gave her a half-smile. “What does you getting beaten have to do with me?”

“How does it not have anything to do with you?!” Wen Tangtang grabbed Wen Miao’s sleeve indignantly and tearfully described what had happened. “…He took a running start, put his hand on the wall, and got over it in one move. If he’d pulled us up back then, we could’ve gotten out too! Wen Miao, tell me that doesn’t make sense!”
Wen Xin poked his head out from behind them and raised a hand. “I can testify. Wen Tangtang wasn’t exaggerating at all. That really was what it looked like at the time.”

Wen Miao had seen Nan Mu climb over a wall before, that night outside Gu Zhishu’s house. So she completely believed the scene Wen Tangtang described.

Hearing Wen Xin speak up only made Wen Tangtang angrier. “And then he ran off by himself and left the two of us inside to get beaten…”

Nan Mu gave a soft laugh, hooked an arm around Wen Xin’s head, and tugged him closer. “Beaten? Then why is he perfectly fine?”

Wen Tangtang looked at the unscathed Wen Xin, her stomach full of rage, and shouted, “Because Wen Xin ran faster than me! They all came after me…”

Wen Xin said, “No, they caught up to me too. It’s just that once he grabbed me, I surrendered…”

Wen Tangtang’s eyes went wide as she stared at the smug Wen Xin. “You actually have the nerve to say that?”

From the side, Nan Mu added unhelpfully, “Exactly. So if you got beaten, can you really blame anyone but yourself? Didn’t I tell you help would be there any second and not to resist?”

Wen Tangtang was left speechless with fury. In the end, she turned around in frustration, tugged at Wen Miao’s sleeve, and called out in a voice on the verge of tears, “Wen Miao-”

Wen Miao had pretty much pieced together what had happened. She hurriedly tried to explain to both sides. “I was the one who told Nan Mu to come out first. I heard through the listening device that Director Wu was bringing people over, and I was afraid you two would be at a disadvantage, so I called the police right away. As for Nan Mu…”

She paused. “He did trick his way in, after all. I was thinking, what if those people tried to drag him into it and accused him of trespassing in a private residence? That’s why I quickly told him to come out first…”

“Does that count as trespassing in a private residence?” Wen Xin asked from behind them.

Wen Miao’s expression froze. She let out two dry laughs. “It doesn’t…? Then I was mistaken… I thought it did… Haha. Well, good that it doesn’t.”

When Wen Tangtang heard that Wen Miao had called the police long ago, her brows knitted into a tight knot. Suspicious, she asked, “When did you know Wen Miao had called the police?”

Nan Mu said, “When you were about to go down and those big guys suddenly appeared downstairs.”

Wen Tangtang blurted, “You saw Wen Miao’s text about calling the police back then?”

“Hm?” Nan Mu glanced at her, the end of his voice lifting as if he didn’t understand the question.

Wen Tangtang felt awful. “The police had already been called, and you still insisted on making us jump down from up there like that… We could’ve just waited upstairs!”

She felt like Nan Mu had been messing with them.

Nan Mu defended himself. “Hey, that’s not fair. If I hadn’t brought you out, what if he’d hidden the two of you in some random corner? Shanshui Villa is huge. Even if the police got in, whether they could find you was another question entirely!”

The two sides were arguing so fiercely that Wen Miao’s head hurt. She raised her voice to drown out their bickering. “Tang Tang’s face is still injured. Can we please hurry to the hospital and buy some ointment for it?”

…

As for what had happened with Cheng Jiamin, only Wen Tangtang and Wen Miao knew the inside story. But now that things had escalated to this point, even if Nan Mu and Wen Xin didn’t know the details, they could more or less guess what had happened.

When Wen Miao brought Cheng Jiamin here, she had already promised Cheng Jiamin that she would take her back with them.

So after helping Wen Miao treat her wound, the group returned to the police station.
