Chapter 151
Chapter 151
Because Cheng Jiamin’s case involved elite universities, professors, and a number of upper-class figures whose backgrounds and social status were extremely sensitive, the police were especially cautious and meticulous during the interrogation.
Wen Xin and Wen Tangtang had already gone a full day and night without sleep. The two of them leaned against each other, nodding off every now and then. Wen Miao couldn’t bear to watch it anymore, so she wanted Nan Mu to take them back to school first.
Nan Mu looked at the two of them leaning together with disdain. “It’s not safe for you to stay here alone. I’ll wake them up and let them take a cab back by themselves.”
After spending the entire day in fear, and having personally experienced these two disappearing together, Wen Miao didn’t feel at ease letting them leave on their own.
“Don’t. You should take them back. I think I’ve got PTSD from this. What if the two of them vanish again later…”
Nan Mu snorted. “It’s not like they’re some hot commodity. How could they disappear that easily?”
“I’m just worried. Scared.” Wen Miao gave a bitter smile. “And besides, once Cheng Jiamin comes out after giving her statement under so much pressure… she probably won’t really want to see any other guys here.”
“What a pain.” Nan Mu realized that too and muttered under his breath, then said, “Then be careful on your own.”
Wen Miao nodded. “Don’t worry… This is a police station. What could possibly happen?”
…
Cheng Jiamin’s statement took an absurdly long time. Wen Miao sat outside for more than five full hours before she finally saw someone come out.
The moment she saw someone emerge, she hurriedly stood up and asked, “Is the statement finished?”
The policewoman walked over to the desk, casually set her notebook down on it, then went to the water dispenser for a drink before answering, “No. It’s a break.”
Wen Miao stared, dumbfounded. “Huh? It’s still not over?”
The policewoman could understand how Wen Miao felt. She patted her shoulder and looked at her with some sympathy. “It’s a complicated matter, and there are a lot of questions to ask. Are you hungry? We’re about to order a late-night snack. Want us to get one for you too?”
Wen Miao said, “My classmate…”
The policewoman said, “Oh, she said she’s hungry too. We’ll order for her as well.”
Wen Miao thought, That’s good. She can still eat. Looks like Cheng Jiamin’s mental resilience has gotten stronger.
The policewoman asked, “So?”
Wen Miao said, “Yes! Please get me a large portion.”
She hadn’t eaten a single bite from noon until night!
The policewoman walked over to the office desk, pulled a colorful card out of the pen holder, and dialed the number printed on it.
As she read off the dishes from the menu on the card to the person on the phone, her clothes caught on the notebook on the desk when she turned around. While still talking on the phone, she instinctively reached out to grab it, but she was too late. The notebook fell to the floor.
Seeing this, Wen Miao quickly went around to help her pick it up.
The notebook seemed to be a record of the statements. It had fallen open on the floor. When Wen Miao bent down to pick it up, she happened to see the open page. Written on it was a string of names.
They were all women’s names, and one of them looked extremely familiar to her.
Wang Zhaodi.
Zhaodi.
That name made Wen Miao’s heart tremble.
Could this be the Zhaodi she was thinking of?
The policewoman hung up the phone. When she turned back and saw the notebook in Wen Miao’s hands, her expression changed slightly.
“This is my work log…”
Wen Miao hurriedly handed the notebook back to her and asked as if nothing had happened, “Is she a girl like Cheng Jiamin?”
The policewoman froze for a moment, then gave a somewhat vague “yes.”
At those words, Wen Miao’s heart tightened. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “This Wang Zhaodi… is she from Guantang Wang in City A?”
Surprise flickered across the policewoman’s face. Testing the waters, she asked, “You know her?”
Wen Miao nodded. “I have a friend named Wang Zhaodi, but I don’t know if this is her.”
The policewoman hesitated, seemingly weighing whether Wen Miao was telling the truth. “According to the information we currently have… she is indeed from Guantang Wang.”
Wen Miao had never expected Wang Zhaodi to be dragged into something like this. But more importantly, if Wang Zhaodi had appeared, then…
Silently, Wen Miao clenched her fingertips. “Then will you be summoning her?”
“Of course. After all, she’s connected to this case.” The policewoman looked at Wen Miao. “Since you know her, would it be convenient for you to provide her contact information?”
Wen Miao did have Zhaodi’s number in her phone. Back when Nan Mu was in the hospital, he had said Zhaodi’s phone wouldn’t go through, so Wen Miao had asked for the number and tried calling it once herself.
But she knew no one would answer that number. She and Nan Mu had called so many times, and only the very first time Nan Mu dialed it had Wang Pandi picked up.
None of that was really appropriate to tell the policewoman, though, so she simply pulled up the number on her phone and gave it to her.
Then she asked, “If possible, I hope you can find my friend as soon as you can.”
The policewoman paused, as if she didn’t understand why Wen Miao would say that.
Wen Miao looked at her with sincere eyes. “The truth is, I haven’t been able to reach her for a long time. I suspect my friend may be in danger right now.”
The policewoman’s expression changed, and her sharp gaze fixed on Wen Miao. “Since when have you been unable to contact her?”
Wen Miao thought for a moment, then told the policewoman the date when she had asked Nan Mu for Zhaodi’s number at the hospital. “I haven’t been able to get through to her since that day. But at the time, I didn’t think too much of it. Later, when I learned from another friend that he couldn’t reach her either, I wondered if maybe she’d changed her number and just hadn’t told me…”
Wen Miao knew she couldn’t come right out and say that she had known from the start that Zhaodi was in danger, so she tried to make the situation sound reasonable. “Only today, when I saw this number, did I suddenly connect everything… I had no idea she was involved in this too. Right now, I’m truly very worried about what situation she might be in.”
With Zhaodi weighing on her mind, Wen Miao’s voice was filled with worry and unease.
The policewoman comforted her. “I’ll have my colleagues begin investigating immediately. You don’t need to worry too much. Although these people threaten girls, it’s only for sexual entertainment. They don’t intend to kill anyone. Perhaps your friend is hiding for the time being to avoid them. Her life probably isn’t in danger.”
Of course, Wen Miao knew that Director Wu and his people most likely wouldn’t go so far as to kill Zhaodi. But if Zhaodi had fallen into the hands of the Organization, that was another matter entirely.
All she could do was hope that, with the police’s help, they could shorten the time it took to find Zhaodi-and get to her before the Organization did.
