Chapter 114

Even after getting a definite answer from Nan Mu, Wen Miao still felt shaken.

Even though she already knew Nan Mu had traveled here through the Time Machine, seeing two of “him” with her own eyes still left her stunned.

“Let me calm down for a second.”

Wen Miao paced back and forth across the room a few times. “So the killer still hasn’t been found? Wait, I don’t think I’ve told you about Nurse Lin yet, have I?”

“I know what you’re going to say,” Nan Mu interrupted. “I saw it at the time… She was trying to kill you.”

All right. After learning that Nan Mu had been the one to save her, Wen Miao had already had a bad feeling about Nurse Lin’s attack.

But she still did not understand. “Why, though? I haven’t done anything to her recently, and we don’t have some old grudge between us.”

“Hard to say.” Nan Mu picked out the useful parts and told her about Nurse Lin’s background. “Nurse Lin and Nurse Xiao Ai probably aren’t on the same side. But their goals may be similar.”

Similar, as in both of them wanted to kill her.

After Nan Mu finished, he thought for a moment and added, “To be more precise, the two of them probably had different intentions. When Nurse Xiao Ai attacked me, she went for the kill, but I also saw her fighting Nurse Lin at the time to save you.”

Wen Miao raised an eyebrow. Now that was strange. Why would Nurse Xiao Ai save her?

“If she wanted to kill you because you knew too much, then she had no reason to save me at all, right?”

If they were silencing witnesses anyway, wouldn’t it be better to let someone else do the job?

Nan Mu fell silent for a moment. At this point, there were some things he seemed to have no choice but to tell her.

“There is something I never told you before…” Nan Mu hesitated. “Actually, someone has been trying to kill you all along… and in the past, he succeeded once.”

Wen Miao’s mouth fell open. She found it somewhat unbelievable that she had actually been killed once before. But as for someone wanting her dead, that was not too hard for her to accept. After all, during the motorcycle incident last time, she had already had that suspicion.

She thought for a moment. “The person you’re talking about… couldn’t be Xu Lei, could it?”

Nan Mu was a little surprised that she had guessed so accurately. “Did you and he… have some kind of conflict?”

Wen Miao laughed despite herself, though she understood why Nan Mu would think that.

“No. But you kept telling me over and over before to watch out for him…” Wen Miao shrugged. “So guessing who wanted to kill me isn’t actually that hard, is it?”

Then she emphasized, “But I really haven’t had much contact with him. I can’t think of anything I could possibly have done to offend him… That’s why, when you asked me before to think about who might have attacked me, I couldn’t come up with a suspect no matter how hard I tried.”

After saying that, Wen Miao grew curious herself. “Then… since you know who the killer is, does that mean he was caught later? Didn’t he tell the police why he wanted to kill people?”

Wen Miao was surprisingly calm, as if the person who had been killed was not her at all. That, more than anything, caught Nan Mu off guard.

“No. Actually… he was never caught by the police.”

Wen Miao froze, her expression turning incredulous. Her reaction was much stronger than when she had just learned she had once been killed.

“I was murdered, and the police still didn’t catch him? That’s way too incompetent.” Wen Miao complained unhappily, “Did he get away? Or did they only find out he was the killer after he died?”

Nan Mu suddenly thought of Qiu Ziyu. If he were here and heard that, he would probably be so mortified he would start jumping up and down.

“You can’t put all the blame on the police. At the time, Chongjing Building was surrounded so tightly by the police that not even water could get through. Everyone was investigated… It’s just that his method of killing was genuinely brilliant. He didn’t leave behind any traces or clues. If anything, he had a whole pile of alibis.”
“Chongjing Building?” Wen Miao found that a little absurd. “I was killed at school?”

What Wen Miao found absurd was the killer’s sheer audacity-daring to strike in a school where people were constantly coming and going. But what felt even more absurd was that, after the killer had acted so brazenly, there still wasn’t a single witness or piece of physical evidence? They could still get away scot-free?

“Yeah.”

Wen Miao kept feeling like something was off. “If the police never caught the murderer, then how do you know he was the one who killed… me?”

Nan Mu’s gaze flickered, revealing an indescribably complicated emotion, only for it to vanish in the next instant. In the end, he simply looked at her in silence, his expression meaningful enough to send a chill through her heart.

Right.

The first time she had met him-hadn’t it been in the Biology Research Lab in Chongjing Building?

That time, the moment he saw her, he had tried to drag her out of there without any explanation, so…

“Was it that time? In the Biology Research Lab in Chongjing Building?”

Nan Mu gave her an approving look.

“So when we met there that time… it wasn’t actually the first time.”

Nan Mu smiled. It had actually been the first time. But it was true that there had been more than one encounter-only, it was the second time that he personally saw Xu Lei kill someone.

But Nan Mu felt there was no need to let her know any of that. No need to let her know that he… had not actually been able to change the reality of her death.

So he changed the subject. “That’s why I’ve thought it through. Whether we want to investigate Gu Zhishu and the others, or… your case, we can’t avoid Xu Lei. Only by starting with him can we uncover more.”

“So what’s your plan?”

“Proximity gives you the advantage. I want to intern at Wisdom Biotech Company.”

“Then I’ll go too. With both of us there, if you want to do anything, it’ll be easier for me to cover for you.”

“No.” Nan Mu rejected the idea at once. “Xu Lei has been trying to get his hands on you from the start. If you go there, wouldn’t that be walking straight into the tiger’s den?”

Wen Miao didn’t seem to care. “Would he dare do anything in front of everyone? Maybe because I’d be an employee of Wisdom Biotech Company, he’d have to avoid suspicion instead.”

Nan Mu genuinely thought Xu Lei was exactly that bold. After all, he had dared to split someone’s head open right there in the school’s Biology Research Lab…

Head…

Nan Mu froze slightly, a trace of confusion in his eyes, along with anger and frustration.

Wen Miao, sitting across from him, found his reaction strange. “What are you thinking about?”

Nan Mu closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I feel like… I might know why he wanted to go after you.”

Wen Miao said, “What?”

Nan Mu said, “Gu Zhishu’s brain condition, plus Zhaodi and Su Yu-although they never had surgery, they all received notices requiring them to undergo physical examinations before they died… But you didn’t. So I always thought you might have just been dragged into it by accident, or that your case was only a branch of theirs. But what if…”

The more Nan Mu thought about it, the colder his back felt. “What if Xu Lei’s reason for attacking you in the Biology Research Lab wasn’t actually to kill you at all? What if he was performing the first half of a transplant procedure?”

The first half of a transplant procedure, of course, was removing the useful transplant material from the donor.

Wen Miao was stunned. “You think I was targeted too?”

But as soon as she said it, she immediately shook her head. “But… I’ve never had a physical exam, have I? How could they be sure my organs matched the recipient’s?”
