Chapter 112
Chapter 112
Wen Miao was half-kneeling on the floor, the hand she had clamped over Nan Mu’s abdomen soaked through with blood.
She had already done everything she could to press down on the wound, but blood still seeped out between her fingers. It dripped onto the floor, drop by drop, and spread across his shirt, the stark contrast of white and red so vivid it seared her eyes. It shocked her so badly she could no longer think.
All she could do was keep trying to wake Nan Mu, who lay on the floor with a face as pale as paper.
“Nan Mu, wake up! Wake up…”
But no matter how she shouted, Nan Mu’s body gave her no response at all.
Everything before her threw her into utter panic.
It was as if she had fallen into an ice pit. Her entire body trembled violently. She kept telling herself to stay calm, but for some reason, her vision grew more and more blurred.
“Nurse Lin… please, save him…”
Before Wen Miao could finish, a numbness shot through the back of her neck.
The last thing she saw before she blacked out was Nurse Lin holding her stun baton.
When had she taken it? And why had she suddenly attacked her?
But before Wen Miao could think about any of that, she sank into endless darkness.
===
When she woke again, she was lying in the dorm room. Beside her, Wen Tangtang sat at the edge of the bed, dozing off.
Her mind felt like it had gone completely blank, as though a piece of time had been cut out of it.
Wen Miao opened her eyes in a daze and stared at the underside of the bed above her. Several seconds passed before her muddled thoughts finally returned to Nan Mu’s untreated wounds-and Nurse Lin, who had attacked her out of nowhere.
Terrified, she shot upright in bed. The movement woke Wen Tangtang, who had been nodding off beside her.
Wen Tangtang rubbed her eyes. Seeing that Wen Miao was awake, she said in delight, “You’re finally awake?”
Only then did Wen Miao seem to realize she was already back in the dorm.
She froze for two seconds, then grabbed Wen Tangtang’s arm and asked urgently, “Where’s Nan Mu?”
“Huh?” Wen Tangtang’s eyes widened, as if she had not quite processed the question. “Who? Nan Mu?”
Wen Tangtang frowned, unable to understand why the first thing Wen Miao asked after waking up was about Nan Mu. Since when had Wen Miao ever had any private contact with Nan Mu?
In truth, Wen Tangtang still had no idea what had happened yesterday. Last night, Wen Xin had suddenly come back carrying an unconscious Wen Miao on his back and told her she had to stay by Wen Miao’s side without leaving for even a moment. But when she asked why Wen Miao had fainted, Wen Xin only dodged the question…
Could this have something to do with Nan Mu?
Wen Tangtang touched her chin, remembering that while Wen Miao had been unconscious yesterday, she seemed to be having some kind of nightmare, cold sweat constantly beading on her forehead. It did not seem like anything good had happened. That brat Nan Mu hadn’t done something to Wen Miao that he shouldn’t have, had he?!
The more Wen Tangtang thought about it, the further her imagination ran. She had already reached the point of looking around for something to beat Nan Mu with. Wen Miao could only suppress the wave of nausea churning in her stomach and get up to stop her. “Tang Tang, it’s not what you think!”
Wen Tangtang planted her hands on her hips. “I saw that red mark on your neck yesterday. I was wondering what that bright red mark was and why I’d never seen it before. Well, now I know. Was it that bastard Nan Mu who-”
Before she could finish, Wen Miao opened her mouth and vomited with a loud retch. Since there was no food in her stomach, all she brought up was yellow bile.
“Wen Miao!”
Wen Tangtang was startled by the scene in front of her. She hurriedly dropped the stick in her hand and reached out to support Wen Miao. “What’s wrong?”
Wen Miao waved a hand, then vomited two more times. Only when she was nearly drained did the nausea finally stop.
Once Wen Miao looked a little better, Wen Tangtang quickly went to the table, pulled out a stack of tissues, and stuffed them into Wen Miao’s hand. Then she ran to get water so Wen Miao could rinse her mouth.
After watching Wen Miao rinse, Wen Tangtang looked at her worriedly. “How are you? Feeling any better?”
Wen Miao felt as if every ounce of strength had been drained from her body. She collapsed weakly onto the bed.
“What on earth is wrong with you? Should we go to the hospital? Your complexion really doesn’t look good.” Wen Tangtang looked at her anxiously.
Wen Miao waved a hand. After taking a moment to catch her breath, she explained weakly, “I’m fine. It’s probably just the aftereffects of the electric shock. I’ll be okay after I rest for a bit.”
But after that interruption, Wen Miao’s rationality had finally returned-if she wanted to know about Nan Mu, she should be asking Wen Xin.
“Electric shock? What electric shock?”
Wen Tangtang still refused to let it go. Wen Miao used drinking water and rinsing her mouth as an excuse to dodge the question. Instead of answering, she asked, “Where’s Wen Xin?”
Seeing how genuinely unwell Wen Miao looked, Wen Tangtang busied herself fetching things and cleaning up the floor. For the moment, she really was fooled by Wen Miao’s diversion.
“Earlier, he sent me a message asking if you were awake… I don’t know where he is now.”
Wen Miao used her upset stomach as an excuse to send Wen Tangtang out to buy breakfast and painkillers.
Only after watching Wen Tangtang’s figure disappear through the doorway did she take out her phone and call Wen Xin.
The call connected quickly. Hearing Wen Miao’s clear, awake voice, Wen Xin, who had spent the entire night on edge, finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“How is Nan Mu? Is he having surgery at the hospital? Is it okay that no one’s staying there with him? And how did I get back here? At the time, Nurse Lin suddenly attacked me with a stun baton. Did you know about that?”
Wen Xin had been about to say that she had asked so many questions at once, he didn’t even know which one to answer first. But when he heard the last question, he shot straight up from his chair.
The noise was so loud that everyone in the lab turned to look at him.
Wen Xin gave them an apologetic smile, then covered his phone and stepped out of the lab. “What did you just say? Who attacked you with a stun baton? Nurse Lin?”
Yesterday, he had found it strange. He had only gone downstairs for a short while, so how had Wen Miao ended up unconscious? But the situation had been too tense then. He’d had neither the time nor the chance to ask, so he could only guess that maybe Wen Miao had fainted from fright.
Well, damn. So there had actually been a whole other incident he knew nothing about!
“You didn’t know?”
Wen Miao was puzzled too. She thought it over-Nurse Lin couldn’t have suddenly shocked her with a stun baton just to play around with her, right? Besides, that situation hadn’t exactly been appropriate for joking around. Yet here she was, safe and sound…
Could it be that Nurse Lin’s target hadn’t been her?
Her brows drew together. “That Nurse Xiao Ai we subdued… She wasn’t set loose by Nurse Lin, was she?”
Otherwise, she couldn’t think of any reason Nurse Lin would have attacked her.
The other end of the line went silent. After a long while, Wen Miao finally heard Wen Xin’s strange voice. “Nurse Xiao Ai is dead… She fell from the building.”
Wen Xin himself had spent the entire night thinking about it, but still hadn’t managed to sort out the connections between everything: how Nurse Xiao Ai had fallen from the building, how Nan Mu had disappeared, who the young man in black carrying Wen Miao had been, and why Wen Miao had fainted…
Mm. Now he had at least figured out the answer to the last question.
So Wen Xin simply recounted everything that had happened after he went downstairs: seeing Nurse Xiao Ai fall from the building, then turning back and running into the young man in black. He explained the whole process to Wen Miao in detail.
When Wen Miao learned that Nurse Xiao Ai had fallen to her death, she was first stunned. Then she heard that before Wen Xin had even gone back upstairs, she had already been carried down by a man dressed in black, meaning he never got the chance to go up and check on Nan Mu at all. Her heart clenched.
So yesterday, they had abandoned Nan Mu and simply left? No one had cared about Nan Mu, who was covered in blood?!
Wen Miao’s hands clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white, as if she were trying to trap all her fury in her fists.
“You knew… You clearly knew he was hurt… How could you just leave him there like that!”
Wen Miao’s tone was very restrained, but the faint dissatisfaction and accusation beneath her words were deafening.
