Chapter 65

Nan Mu fell into deep thought.

While there were plenty of computers in the hospital, every single one had an owner. Once the attending physicians finished their shifts, the consultation rooms would be locked. If the doctors hadn’t finished their shifts, it was impossible to use a computer right in front of them.

Furthermore, the hospital was heavily monitored by security cameras. One wrong move could trigger a cascade of consequences, and they couldn’t exactly pick the lock of a consultation room right under a camera’s nose.

“Sigh, if only there were invisibility cloaks in this world. Then I could just walk right in,” Wen Miao mused dejectedly.

“You don’t need an invisibility cloak to walk in broad daylight.”

Wen Miao curled her lip. “But as soon as I go in, the doctor will tell me to leave.”

“Then make it so he can’t see you. That way, you won’t have to leave.”

Wen Miao frowned. “What do you mean?”

Nan Mu replied, “Walk in right in front of him, and then disappear before his eyes.”

Wen Miao was even more bewildered. “Disappear? How?”

He wasn’t a magician; it wasn’t like he could perform a vanishing act.

Nan Mu explained, “I’ll go in with you. You pester the doctor for an examination, and I’ll take the opportunity to hide inside the room.”

Wen Miao: “???”

There were so many things wrong with that plan that she didn’t know where to start questioning him.

“Is the doctor blind? He’ll know if you left or not.”

“That’s why you have to provide cover for me.”

“But… but there are cameras inside the consultation rooms too… If someone checks the feed, won’t we be caught?”

Nan Mu didn’t say anything, but his gaze swept over her from head to toe.

Self-consciously, Wen Miao looked herself over as well. Still not understanding, she stared at Nan Mu with wide eyes.

Nan Mu suppressed a smile. “There’s one type of consultation room that definitely won’t have cameras.”

What kind of room wouldn’t have cameras? Wen Miao was about to argue when she suddenly remembered the way Nan Mu had looked at her. It clicked. “Are you talking about… a gynecological exam?”

Nan Mu nodded. “I’ll accompany you into the gynecology department for an exam. The doctor will eventually tell me to leave. You find a way to lead the doctor into the inner examination area first, and I’ll fake the sound of leaving. In reality, I’ll find a way to hide in the room.”

Wen Miao felt like Nan Mu was telling her a fairy tale. “Hide… where is there to hide in a room like that?”

“Under the bed, under the desk, behind the curtains… I’ll play it by ear.”

Wen Miao thought he had gone mad. How could the doctor fail to notice a grown man in the room? “I can cover for you while I’m in there… but I have to leave once the exam is over. What if the next patient comes in, or if the doctor is a bit more alert? There’s no way you won’t be discovered.”

“So we have to find a way to make sure you’re the last patient of the day.”

Wen Miao opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The idea was too insane; her legs were already feeling weak.

But if they didn’t do this, there really wasn’t a better way.

She gritted her teeth and stumbled through one last question. “But this is a gynecological exam… I have to take off my… for the checkup. And you’ll be right there in the room…”

Nan Mu put on an innocent expression, looking like a man willing to sacrifice himself for the cause. “Don’t worry, I won’t peek. Besides, there’s a curtain in the way; I won’t be able to see anything.”

Wen Miao: “…”

Was the curtain for gynecological exams thick enough? It probably wasn’t translucent, right?

She just hoped it wouldn’t cast any strange shadows or silhouettes…

Good grief!

Wen Miao’s palms were slick with sweat as she clutched her registration slip.

Nan Mu reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, his fingers gently squeezing her shoulder blade to signal her to relax.

Steeling herself, Wen Miao walked inside and handed the slip to the female doctor behind the desk.

The doctor, seeing a man and a woman enter together, didn’t find it unusual. She took the slip and asked, “What seems to be the problem?”

Wen Miao’s face flushed bright red instantly. She stammered, “I… I just feel like something’s uncomfortable somewhere.”
The female doctor remained unfazed. “What kind of discomfort? Describe your symptoms.”

“Sym… symptoms?” Wen Miao’s head throbbed. She desperately tried to recall the information she had just looked up online. “It’s… well, sometimes it feels really… really itchy… and, um… it feels like a lot of bugs are biting me.”

Wen Miao stumbled through the sentence. Saying such things to a doctor while Nan Mu was standing right there…

Wen Miao felt that if there were a hole in the ground, she would be the first to crawl into it.

“Have you been sexually active recently?”

Wen Miao froze for a moment. “No… I haven’t…”

If there were a thermometer present, Wen Miao felt her face would probably register a hundred degrees Celsius.

The female doctor finally looked up at the two of them, her gaze shifting between them with a skeptical tone. “Is it ‘not recently’ or ‘never’? Since you’re here to see a doctor, you shouldn’t hide your condition.”

Wen Miao’s face turned beet red. “Really, I haven’t. Not ever.”

The doctor gave Nan Mu another strange look, but her professional ethics allowed her to suppress her burning desire for gossip.

Opening the computer interface, the doctor asked, “Do you have medical insurance? Scan your card first.”

Wen Miao hurried to open her digital insurance ID and scanned it on the device. Her personal information popped up on the screen.

The doctor clicked a few times on the computer, then stood up to grab medical gloves from a partitioned area. “Alright, the man can step out now. Remember to close the door behind you. You, go lie down on the bed behind the curtain and take off your pants.”

Wen Miao instinctively glanced at Nan Mu and saw him give her a reassuring gesture. He then said loudly, “I’ll head out first then. I’ll wait for you outside.”

As he spoke, Nan Mu pulled open the office door and shut it firmly behind him.

Wen Miao hurried into the partitioned area, which was separated by a green curtain. Since there were no windows inside the cubicle, the light was dim. She let out a sigh of relief and quickly pulled the curtain shut, completely blocking the view between the inside and outside.

As she lay on the bed, the doctor began the examination.

“Are there any other symptoms besides the itching? Any burning sensations?”

“No… none.”

“The symptoms are somewhat like trichomoniasis, but there are no red spots yet, nor is there any congestion or edema. It doesn’t look very serious; the itching might just be due to poor personal hygiene. It’s best to change your underwear every day from now on.”

Wen Miao didn’t dare mention that she changed her undergarments daily. She could only nod frantically in agreement, praying the doctor wouldn’t ask anything else. The thought that Nan Mu could hear every question the doctor was asking made her feel like she was undergoing a public execution.

Thinking Wen Miao wasn’t taking it seriously, the doctor’s tone grew sterner. “Don’t ignore this. Your current symptoms are very mild and manageable. If you don’t treat it soon, you’ll experience burning sensations, pain, and painful urination later on.”

Wen Miao was startled by the doctor’s tone. She had originally used this as an excuse to get inside for treatment, but seeing the doctor examine her so thoroughly and speak with such conviction, she couldn’t help but wonder if she really was sick.

“Huh? So… have I been diagnosed now?”

“You’re the one who said you were uncomfortable. What do you think?”

Wen Miao was choked up, unsure whether she actually had it or not. “Then… why would someone get this illness?”

“There are many reasons. For example, staying up late frequently leads to low immunity, making it easy to catch infections. Especially for those who don’t pay attention to personal hygiene… Don’t think you can’t get infected just because you haven’t had sexual relations. Trichomonas is very easily transmitted. For instance, in public baths, on toilet seats, in swimming pools… or sharing towels with others. These are all very common ways to get infected.”

Swimming pools?

Toilet seats?

Public baths?

She hit every single mark. Wen Miao suddenly felt like crying. “Then… then what should I do?”
