Chapter 9
Chapter 9
I sprinted over and kicked the door open.
A foul stench immediately surged out, and my heart shot into my throat.
Everyone instinctively covered their mouths and noses.
I felt a stab of regret. Maybe I should have waited for the innkeeper’s wife to come open the door. With a woman there, things might have gone better.
But in the next moment, everyone gathered at the doorway froze.
It was only then that I realized the scream just now hadn’t sounded like a girl’s.
The room was a complete mess. Luo Gui sat slumped on the floor, stark naked, his twisted eyes bulging wide.
And when I looked at the overturned bedding, where was there any sign of the Blind Girl?
Lying on the bed was a giant carp as long as a person.
The carp was covered in bite marks. Scales were scattered all over the bed, and its lower half was a bloody mess, with fish bones exposed in some places.
Even worse, the fish wasn’t dead yet.
It thrashed its tail, smearing fish blood and whatever had spilled from its belly all over the bed-and all over Luo Gui.
Wang Cheng only peeked inside out of curiosity, then gave a loud “urgh,” turned around, and threw up.
Only then did Luo Gui seem to come back to his senses.
His eyes bloodshot, he screamed “Aaaah!” over and over, grabbing everything within reach and hurling it onto the bed.
The innkeeper was scared stiff, clutching his phone, unsure whether to call the police-and even if he did, he had no idea what he would say.
Luo Hong’s face shifted from green to white, his teeth grinding so hard they creaked.
But in the end, he was afraid of making the incident any bigger. Gritting his teeth and forcing down his nausea, he went into the room to calm down his brother, who looked like he’d completely lost his mind.
I was shocked too, but just in case, I followed him inside and checked the room from top to bottom. I confirmed that the girl from last night really wasn’t there.
As I was leaving, the thrashing fish fell to the floor.
I saw a large black mass exposed inside its torn-open belly, just like the clump of hair mixed with bits of flesh and fish scales that I’d dreamed about last night.
I dragged Wang Cheng out of the inn. After he finished throwing up, he started laughing so hard he could barely breathe.
“I didn’t get a chance to take a picture just now. Luo Gui looked so damn pathetic, hahaha. Spent the whole night getting lovey-dovey with a fish-”
Before he could finish, Wang Cheng suddenly froze. “Brother Long, you don’t think that Blind Girl from last night was actually a carp spirit, do you?”
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
I pulled five hundred yuan from under the windshield wiper. Clearly, the Blind Girl had left it there when she came back last night. “This time, Luo Gui kicked an iron plate. That girl isn’t an ordinary person.”
I climbed into the truck bed and checked the fish crates one by one. Every crate was intact, and the fish were all still inside.
Luo Hong’s truck was parked off to the side. I gave it a glance. The number looked about right, and no crates were missing.
But the fish on Luo Gui’s bed couldn’t have appeared out of thin air.
Which meant that in Luo Hong’s truck, there had to be one empty crate.
