Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Wang Cheng was supposed to take over the driving that afternoon, but he was in such bad shape that I did it for him.
I kept the window open the whole way. It was a little cold, but at least it helped clear out some of the fishy stench in the cab.
That night, we planned to stay in a town along the way. There would be mountain roads tomorrow, and it was better not to drive them after dark if we could avoid it.
By evening, we made it to the inn without too much trouble.
The place was pretty bare-bones, but it had space to park big trucks, and the rates were low. Most of the people who stayed here were truck drivers.
There was a cafeteria on the first floor. A few yuan got you a meal.
Wang Cheng had no appetite at all. He ordered two tea eggs and a bottle of beer, planning to finish them and go to bed early.
Wang Cheng and I were eating when the inn door was pushed open.
All of a sudden, I heard the sound of bells. The chime was startlingly clear, as if it were striking directly against my heart.
But when I looked at Wang Cheng, he didn’t react at all, as though he hadn’t heard a thing.
I raised my head and looked toward the entrance. To my surprise, the person who had come in was a young woman.
She looked to be in her early twenties and was holding a white cane, tapping it back and forth against the floor. She was clearly a Blind Girl.
How had a young girl who couldn’t see ended up in a place like this?
The whole inn was full of rough, burly men. There wasn’t another woman in sight.
The owner looked a little surprised too. After a moment’s hesitation, he walked over and asked, “Is there anything I can help you with?”
Although the girl couldn’t see, she seemed to pinpoint the owner’s direction at once. “Hello. I’d like to stay for the night. Please give me a room.”
That made the owner even more uncertain. “Miss, the conditions here aren’t great. If you go one more street over, there’s a chain hotel there.”
The owner meant well. After all, this place was a mixed bag, and he was worried about the girl’s safety.
Unexpectedly, the girl was quite insistent. “I’ll stay here. Please just get me a room. Your place is cheap. I can’t afford the hotel.”
As she was speaking, the inn door was pushed open again.
This time, the ones who walked in were the Luo Hong brothers.
Luo Gui still had that flushed, excited look on his face. The moment he entered, his leech-like gaze stuck to the girl.
The girl sensed that someone had come in as well and shifted slightly to the side. Then she hurriedly pulled out her ID and a few dozen yuan, shoving it all into the owner’s hands.
At that point, the owner had no choice. In the end, there was no reason to turn away business that had come right to his door.
But I had a faint, uneasy feeling.
Especially when the owner led the girl farther inside. Luo Gui stared at her back, practically drooling.
