A moment later, I followed Luo Hong into the cave, hunched over with the box in my arms.

The cave wasn’t dug very deep, but the path sloped downward the whole way, and some stretches were steep.

After we rounded two bends, the space ahead suddenly opened up.

It looked like a natural cavern. In the middle was a large pool, its water churning and splashing. All around it were numerous stone openings and cracks, with wind whistling through them.

I spotted the girl named Lili at once.

She had been hung upside down above the pool, her body swaying gently, without the slightest sound.

Pi Gui and Li Lun were standing by the pool. I could faintly hear Pi Gui speaking.

“Young Master Li, once we feed it live bait tonight, this fish medicine will finally be complete.”

“Don’t blame me for dragging this out so long. The medicine is fierce. If I hadn’t first conditioned your body, you wouldn’t have been able to withstand it at all.”

“He’s lying to you!”

Before Li Lun could answer, a girl’s shout rang out from the corner.

I looked toward the voice. It was the Blind Girl I had met at the inn.

Right now, she seemed able to see, but her hands and feet were bound. There had been a strip of cloth tied over her mouth too, though it looked like she had rubbed it off herself.

“Li Lun, your knees are so stiff they’re almost locked. Don’t you know that?”

“Those fish were raised on dead bodies. Your whole body is full of corpse poison now!”

“If you eat a living person tonight, you’ll turn completely into a zombie-”

Pi Gui shot the girl in the corner a vicious glare, then turned to the man behind him and snapped, “Pi Chun, go gag her. If you can’t keep her quiet, break her jaw!”

“I’ll do it…”

Luo Gui, who had been standing beside Pi Gui the whole time, suddenly spoke. Even in the dim light of the cave, I could see the excitement in his eyes.

Luo Gui picked up a broken stone from the ground and walked toward the girl in the corner step by step.

He had always been the type to repay the smallest slight, and the humiliation from that night had probably seared itself into his bones.

“Get away from me! You monster with a ghost’s face and a ghost’s heart! I wasted that fish on you that day-” Even now, the girl refused to spare him with her tongue.

On the other side, Pi Gui had already guided Li Lun to the rope binding Lili. Once the rope was untied, Lili would fall into the pool.

The massive carp in the water had clearly been fed some kind of drug by Pi Gui. One after another, they kept leaping from the surface, opening their bloody maws as if they could not wait to swallow Lili whole.
