Chapter 155
Chapter 155
That meant she had no way to confirm directly whether the Queen was Aphro after all.
But the Magic Mirror stolen from the Witch was already in her hands. The Queen’s identity was all but obvious.
Now she only needed to find a way to pass this information on to Nemesis.
Tu Nan thought back to the moment when she had been sucked into the Mirror World earlier, then tentatively pressed her finger against the Magic Mirror.
Shallow ripples spread across the surface. The next second, that familiar wave of dizziness hit her again, and she found herself back in the Queen’s bedroom.
The Magic Mirror was still in her hand.
Without the slightest hesitation, Tu Nan stuffed the Magic Mirror into her clothes.
“Wuwuwu, I want to eat-”
She shoved the Teething Stick into the mirror’s surface again.
The seemingly solid mirror swallowed the Teething Stick whole.
“If I’m giving you food, then be good and shut up,” Tu Nan said softly.
She straightened her appearance in front of the full-length mirror and was just about to leave when she suddenly heard several forceful coughs.
Damn it. Someone was coming.
Cold sweat instantly broke out across Tu Nan’s skin.
She had not been in here for long. The Queen should not have returned so quickly.
For now, she could only hope Xu Duoyi could hold off whoever was outside.
She quickly walked to the door, only to hear voices coming from beyond it.
“Eldest Prince, what brings you here?”
Eugene? Why was he here?
Fortunately, it was not the Queen. Tu Nan let out a slight breath of relief.
“I have business with Mother,” Eugene said coldly. “She hasn’t returned yet, has she? I’ll wait for her inside.”
“…Eldest Prince.” The Maid anxiously tried to stop him, but he shoved her aside with force.
Immediately after, Eugene pushed open the door.
Tu Nan sat on the sofa and looked expressionlessly at the person in the doorway.
Eugene probably had not expected anyone to be in the room. He froze for a moment, and a trace of nervousness appeared on his face.
Tu Nan did not miss that subtle expression.
Wasn’t Eugene supposed to be at odds with the Queen? It was suspicious enough that he had come looking for the Queen so late at night, and now he was showing that kind of expression. It seemed somewhat inconsistent with his personality.
“Forgive me, Queen.” The Maid hurriedly squeezed in from behind Eugene, her face pale as she said, “I tried to stop him, but the Eldest Prince…”
“It’s fine.” Tu Nan’s face was cold. “You may leave first.”
“Yes.” The Maid let out a breath of relief, lowered her head, and walked out, even thoughtfully closing the door behind her.
“I did not know you were in the room,” Eugene said in a low voice. The rebellious look he had shown toward the Queen at the dining table was completely gone from his face. Instead, there was a faint air of cautiousness about him.
Tu Nan’s instincts told her there had to be something wrong between these two.
“What did you need me for?” she asked.
Before she understood the relationship between them, it was best to speak as little as possible.
“I know I shouldn’t have come to see you during this period,” Eugene said as he walked forward and stopped in front of Tu Nan.
Because he was standing, she had no choice but to lift her head to look at him.
She frowned instinctively.
But Eugene, who was standing before her, suddenly dropped to one knee without warning, took the hand resting on her lap, and kissed it lightly.
“But I have missed you far too much.”
Tu Nan’s pupils trembled, and even the expression on her face showed the faintest crack.
Eugene and the Queen… Could they be in that kind of relationship?
Was the discord they put on in front of outsiders all just a cover?
Even her breathing became a little unsteady.
Thankfully, Eugene’s head was lowered at that moment, so he did not notice anything strange about her.
Tu Nan steadied herself and restored her original expression before Eugene raised his head.
She gave a light cough. “Since you know you shouldn’t-”
“No, actually… there is one more thing I wanted to ask you…” Afraid she would get angry, Eugene hurried on. “You were the one who told me to poison the King. So why has a Saintess suddenly appeared now?”
Confusion showed on his face. “Why are the people from the Church saying that sacrificing the Saintess will restore the King’s health?”
Tu Nan was getting anxious.
The half hour was almost up. She didn’t have time to play some touching mother-and-son reunion with Eugene here.
She had to get rid of him as quickly as possible.
“Naturally, I have my own considerations in everything I do.” After thinking for a moment, she deliberately put on a displeased look. “Are you questioning my decision?”
From what she had observed, Eugene was clearly the weaker party in this relationship. If she was too polite to him, he would only grow suspicious.
Sure enough, Eugene did not doubt her in the slightest.
“No, I only…”
“Enough.” Tu Nan cut him off. “I’m a little tired. Leave at once, and don’t let anyone find out you came here.”
Eugene hesitated.
“But we haven’t met in private for such a long time…”
Tu Nan looked at him coldly.
Eugene lowered his head. “I understand. I’ll be careful.”
He rose to his feet, gave Tu Nan one long look, then turned and left the room.
Only after he was gone did Tu Nan finally let out a breath of relief.
She stood up, waited a few seconds, and, guessing that Eugene had already left the area, opened the door and walked out.
“Queen.” The Maid at the door respectfully lowered her head.
“I have something to attend to. I’ll be out for a while,” she said coldly.
“Yes.”
Tu Nan did her best to control herself so she would not seem too anxious. She turned, and then sensed something was wrong with her body.
She lowered her head. The Queen’s sharp nails were slowly receding.
The long, fair fingers were also changing back into Judy’s slightly rounded, girlish knuckles.
She was about to transform back.
Tu Nan quickened her pace and finally managed to turn the corner at the very last moment of the transformation.
“God, you’re finally back.” Xu Duoyi, who had been waiting around the corner, anxiously grabbed her hand. “I almost died of fright when I saw Eugene just now.”
“We’ll talk when we get back,” Tu Nan said curtly.
Xu Duoyi nodded and changed the dress on Tu Nan back.
The two hurried toward the bedroom.
“Judy? And Miss Monica?”
Just as the two rounded another corner, they happened to run into the Queen returning from the King’s bedroom.
The Queen looked them over, suspicion in her voice. “What are you doing here?”
“We ate a bit too much at dinner, so we came out for a walk,” Tu Nan said with a smile. “Queen, you still haven’t retired at this hour?”
“It’s so late. Best not to wander around,” the Queen said softly.
“Yes.” Xu Duoyi smiled as well. “We were just about to go back.”
The Queen glanced behind them. This corridor was the only route to her bedroom.
Her eyes darkened, but she smiled faintly. “Then I won’t keep you.”
Tu Nan and Xu Duoyi curtsied, then hurried away.
The Queen watched their figures disappear from sight before turning around and striding back to the door of her bedroom, her face expressionless.
The attendant was a little surprised to see her return so quickly, but because of the Queen’s usual imposing manner, she did not speak.
“Did anyone come by while I was away?”
While she was away?
The Maid thought carefully. Tonight, only Eugene had come, and he had arrived while the Queen was here.
She shook her head. “No one came by while you were away.”
