Chapter 119
Chapter 119
“Tu Nan, wake up.”
Tu Nan felt someone nudging her. Her eyelids were so heavy it took real effort to claw her way out of sleep.
“Morning.”
She lifted her lids, recognized who it was, and greeted her lazily.
He Ling sat down beside her and passed her the breakfast she’d brought back from the cafeteria. “I figured you probably didn’t eat, so I brought this for you.”
“Thanks.” Tu Nan rolled her stiff neck a little, took it from her, bit into it, then drank a mouthful of warm milk.
Only after the warmth settled in her stomach did she finally regain a bit of energy.
“Did everything go okay last night?” He Ling asked.
“It was fine.” Tu Nan didn’t mention Little Red Riding Hood’s parents. She only talked about the Woman dressed like a nurse in the middle of the night.
“A Woman dressed like a nurse?” He Ling looked surprised.
Tu Nan nodded. “Security took her away.”
“I think I’ve heard something about that…” He Ling’s expression turned thoughtful, as if recalling something. “The nurses used to chat about it-saying that late at night, a nurse who died in the hospital would come back.”
“But I never ran into anything on night duty, so I stopped taking it seriously. Besides, this is a hospital. There are always going to be ugly rumors.”
Tu Nan took another bite of her sandwich, her gaze dropping as she mulled it over.
A nurse who died in the hospital?
From what that Woman looked like last night, she really did resemble a hospital nurse.
“Since you’re fine and that Woman was taken away by security, don’t worry too much.” He Ling tidied up the table and stood. “I’m going to do rounds. Take your time eating.”
Tu Nan smiled and nodded.
She really did have something more important to think about right now.
Little Red Riding Hood’s parents said that in a week at most, Little Red Riding Hood would be taken in for surgery.
She had to find a way to get Little Red Riding Hood out before then.
Even though they refused to tell her who exactly was helping them, Tu Nan still had a vague guess.
Only, that person…
“Tu Nan?”
A bright voice cut off her thoughts. Tu Nan looked up, a little surprised by who it was.
“Daisy?”
“Long time no see.” Daisy winked at her.
“Long time no see.”
Daisy scrunched her nose, putting on an exaggeratedly aggrieved look. “You haven’t asked me to eat with you lately.”
“Sorry. I’ve been too busy.” Only then did Tu Nan notice a small Boy behind her. “And this is…?”
“A new patient for the inpatient department. I just happened to be free, so I brought him over,” Daisy said, smiling.
“Daisy, what are you doing here?”
It was rare for the nurse station to be this lively so early in the morning.
“Head Nurse.” Tu Nan stood and greeted the Head Nurse.
The Head Nurse didn’t look at her, only glanced at the Boy behind Daisy. “Is this the new patient?”
“Yep.” Daisy tugged the Boy out from behind her and patted his head. “Don’t be scared. The Head Nurse isn’t a bad person.”
The Boy glanced at the Head Nurse and immediately burst into loud sobs, shouting over and over things like, “I want to go home,” and “I want Mommy.”
Awkwardness hung thick in the air.
Daisy gave an embarrassed laugh and tucked him behind her again.
“Sorry, Head Nurse. Kids are easily frightened.”
“What’s he suffering from?” the Head Nurse asked, shooting Daisy a glance.
“It’s probably…” Daisy propped her chin on her index finger, looking troubled. “I’m not really sure. I was just the one who happened to bring him upstairs, that’s all.”
“Oh…” She suddenly pointed behind the Head Nurse. “Eva is here. She’s the one who performed the examination just now. You can just ask her.”
Eva, who was holding a report, froze for a moment.
The Head Nurse turned around to look at Eva, her sharp gaze fixed on her. Her voice carried a hint of severity. “What illness does this child have that requires hospitalization?”
“This…” Eva’s eyes met the Head Nurse’s, and she instinctively looked away, glancing instead at Daisy behind her.
Daisy looked at her with a beaming smile, her tone light. “Eva, don’t be afraid. The Head Nurse is just asking; she won’t eat you.”
The joke wasn’t funny. Tu Nan felt the surrounding atmospheric pressure drop even further.
However, Eva seemed to draw encouragement from it. She lowered her head and said haltingly, “The report shows that his heart has some issues. He needs to be hospitalized.”
“His heart?” Daisy’s eyes widened in shock, and she gave the boy behind her a sympathetic look. “He’s so young. How pitiful.”
The boy looked at Daisy with a somewhat dazed expression.
Tu Nan also glanced at the boy. When he was crying earlier, he had sounded full of energy and his complexion was rosy; it really didn’t look like he had any heart problems.
“Let me see the report.” The Head Nurse reached out toward Eva.
Eva handed the report to her.
The Head Nurse took it and began reading it seriously, head lowered.
“How is it?” Daisy frowned slightly. “Could there be something wrong with the report? It’s truly heartbreaking for such a young child.”
The Head Nurse silently returned the report to Eva, her expression unreadable.
“Arrange for him to be admitted to a ward.”
Daisy sighed softly, looking as though she were grieving for the boy.
“Daisy, aren’t you going back to work?” the Head Nurse said suddenly. “It’s not good to be constantly away from your post.”
For some reason, Tu Nan felt that the Head Nurse seemed to be subtly targeting Daisy.
“Then I’ll be going now.” Daisy seemed completely unbothered. She waved at Tu Nan and said with a smile, “Let’s have a meal together when you’re free!”
Tu Nan could only nod.
Daisy walked away with light, brisk steps.
“Are you close with her?” The Head Nurse waited until Daisy’s figure had completely disappeared before looking at Tu Nan.
“Not very well acquainted,” Tu Nan answered honestly. “But Daisy is very enthusiastic.”
“Of course, she’s enthusiastic toward everyone.” The Head Nurse snorted coldly. “But I advise you not to get too close to her.”
What did that mean?
Don’t get too close to Daisy. By saying this, was the Head Nurse hinting at something, or was she afraid Tu Nan might find something out?
“I heard you ran into some trouble during your night shift yesterday?” the Head Nurse asked suddenly.
“There was a bit of minor trouble,” Tu Nan said with a smile, “but fortunately, security arrived in time, so nothing went wrong.”
“Is that so?” the Head Nurse said meaningfully. “No other accidents?”
Tu Nan’s expression didn’t change, her face still wearing a faint smile. She only allowed a perfect touch of confusion to show. “Other accidents? I don’t quite understand. What are you referring to, Head Nurse?”
“It’s nothing.” The Head Nurse glanced at her. “Are you finished with your rounds? You worked the night shift, so you can go back to the dormitory to rest this morning, but you must continue working this afternoon.”
This damn exploitative hospital.
Tu Nan nodded. “I’ll go right away.”
