Chapter 149
Chapter 149
“Where is the wolf?” Tu Nan asked.
“The wolf was wounded by my shotgun,” the dark figure said in a low voice. “It ran away in fear.”
Tu Nan slowly raised her arm, pushing the Lantern Flower in her hand slightly forward.
The dark figure seemed to be dazzled by the light and shifted slightly.
“Mr. Hunter, you certainly have a burly physique.” Tu Nan seemed to believe his words.
“That’s for better hunting.”
“Why does it look like you’re draped in animal fur?”
“That’s because I’m afraid of the cold.”
Afraid of the cold? The temperature in the forest was indeed much lower than outside, but it was nowhere near the point of needing to wear animal pelts.
She stared intently at the thing crouching by the tree roots.
“But why does it look like I also see a tail?”
“Your eyes must be playing tricks on you.”
“Is that so?” Tu Nan’s voice was somewhat faint. “I suppose so. Wait there for a moment, I’ll come over to help you up.”
The dark figure chuckled with satisfaction.
In the next second, Tu Nan turned and bolted in the opposite direction without looking back.
That dark figure was no Hunter; it was clearly a wolf!
Since she couldn’t harm the animals in the forest, her only option was to flee.
As she ran, she heard distinct movements coming from behind her.
Trying to outrun a wolf sounded like something out of a fairy tale.
Tu Nan summoned the Fairy Tale Compendium directly and hurled it behind her with all her might.
Two wails rang out simultaneously behind her.
“Tu Nan!!!” the Fairy Tale Compendium shouted angrily while dodging the wolf’s attack. “I’m just a book, not a kitchen knife!”
“Open your mouth and bite it!” Tu Nan shouted loudly, not having time to look back. “But you are not allowed to harm it!”
Was that even a reasonable request?
The gray wolf’s green eyes flickered with uncertainty as it watched the strange, talking book flying around its head-a book that had a large mouth growing out of it.
The Fairy Tale Compendium resigned itself to its fate and bit off a mouthful of wolf fur.
The gray wolf grew annoyed. However, the Fairy Tale Compendium was too agile for it to catch, so it turned its attention back to chasing Tu Nan.
Tu Nan ran until her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her chest. The adrenaline rush allowed her to reach her fastest speed ever, but compared to a wolf, it was still not enough.
The Fairy Tale Compendium managed to stall the wolf for a moment. As she ran, she scanned her surroundings for a place to hide.
As she passed a large tree, she suddenly seemed to hear someone calling her.
“Sister?”
Tu Nan stopped abruptly and quickly scanned the area.
“Sister, I’m here!”
A patch of grass nearly half a person tall was pushed aside, and a head poked out from behind it.
Tu Nan’s eyes widened.
*
In the blink of an eye, that human was gone.
A gust of wind blew past, and the wolf caught a nauseating scent.
The smell was like a piece of tofu that had rotted for a month and then been tossed into manure; it was so foul that the wolf lost its appetite entirely.
The Fairy Tale Compendium above its head was still tirelessly trying to bite it.
The book’s bites weren’t deep-it didn’t even break the skin-it only nipped off a few tufts of fur from the top of the wolf’s head.
Finally, it couldn’t take it anymore.
The gray wolf threw its head back and howled, then turned and ran deep into the forest.
It wanted to escape this stinking, godforsaken place.
The Fairy Tale Compendium spat out the fur in its mouth with a series of disgusted noises.
The nearby grass suddenly rustled, and after a moment, Tu Nan crawled out, followed closely by another person.
“Little Red Riding Hood, what are you doing here?” Tu Nan looked down at Little Red Riding Hood, feeling a surge of unexpected pleasant surprise.
Since her appearance in this Instance was different from the last one, Little Red Riding Hood looked at her strangely. “How do you know my name is Little Red Riding Hood?”
“I am Tu Nan.” Tu Nan knelt down in front of her. “I don’t know how to explain it to you… anyway, I am Tu Nan. Due to some special reasons, I’ve changed my identity.”
“Okay.”
To Little Red Riding Hood, Sister Tu Nan did indeed have some special methods, as evidenced by the perfume she had given her.
Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Tu Nan. “Sister Tu Nan, have you been well since I left?”
Tu Nan smiled and nodded. “I successfully passed my probation and became a full-time employee.”
“That’s wonderful.” Little Red Riding Hood looked as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. “I was so afraid that my leaving would cause trouble for you.”
Tu Nan patted her head. “Nothing of the sort. By the way, what are you doing here?”
“I’m going to deliver a cake to my grandmother.” Little Red Riding Hood lifted the basket on her arm to show Tu Nan. “Grandmother lives on the other side of the forest, so I got up very early to start my journey.”
Tu Nan leaned down and stroked her hair. “Aren’t you afraid of the wolf?”
Little Red Riding Hood spoke in a crisp, clear voice. “It won’t bite me.”
“Why not?”
“Because I have the wolf-repellent water the Witch sister gave me!” Little Red Riding Hood pulled a glass bottle from her pocket. “The Witch sister gave it to me. As long as I apply it to my body, all the animals will stay far away from me.”
Maria was right; Nemesis was indeed a kind person.
Although Little Red Riding Hood had successfully escaped from the hospital back then, Tu Nan was still curious if she had encountered any obstacles that night.
“Little Red Riding Hood, was everything smooth on the night you left the hospital?” she asked, crouching down.
“Everything was fine at first, but when I reached the Rear Garden, a big dog blocked my way.” Little Red Riding Hood’s small face showed a lingering look of fear. “It kept growling in my direction. I was a bit scared and didn’t dare to go around it to reach the wall.”
Hans? Dogs had a keen sense of smell. Even though Little Red Riding Hood’s presence had been masked, it must have still caught the scent of the perfume on her.
“What happened next?” Tu Nan asked.
“Then the sister we met in the lobby came by. She led the dog away, so I quickly ran to the wall and climbed out.” Little Red Riding Hood blinked her eyes. “Mama and Papa were waiting for me outside. Once I was out, they hugged me and we left.”
Daisy had led Hans away originally intending to use him to find Little Red Riding Hood, but she had inadvertently allowed her to escape instead.
If the standoff had lasted any longer and the perfume’s effect had worn off, Little Red Riding Hood probably wouldn’t have been able to leave.
Tu Nan couldn’t help but let out a small laugh.
“Sister Tu Nan, why are you here?” Little Red Riding Hood asked curiously.
“I’m looking for the Witch sister,” she said softly. “But I’m a little lost.”
Little Red Riding Hood’s eyes lit up. “I can take you there!”
*
Little Red Riding Hood volunteered to lead the way.
“I often go to play with the Witch sister,” she said, skipping along in front of Tu Nan. “The milk the Witch sister boils is the tastiest.”
The mist had dissipated unnoticed, and Tu Nan put away the Lantern Flower.
The Fairy Tale Compendium was still holding a grudge over being thrown earlier, and it cursed her loudly before she tucked it away.
Tu Nan grabbed a handful of the wolf fur it had just spat out on the ground and stuffed it into its mouth.
“No swearing in front of children,” she said with a friendly smile, putting the Fairy Tale Compendium back.
“Sister, what was that?” Little Red Riding Hood asked curiously.
“It’s a pet I keep.” Tu Nan brushed the dust off her hands, her smile gentle. “Let’s hurry along.”
Little Red Riding Hood nodded, only half-understanding, and obediently led the way.
The Witch’s Cottage was actually not far from their current position, but if one didn’t know the route, they would just keep spinning in circles within the forest, never finding the correct destination.
Tu Nan had originally planned that if Nemesis truly refused to see her, she would shout in the forest that she knew who Aphro was. Given how much Nemesis cared about Aphro, she would definitely see her.
But she had unexpectedly run into Little Red Riding Hood.
The Witch’s Cottage was now right before them.
Little Red Riding Hood quickened her pace and ran happily into the yard. She first patted Mimi’s head and then hopped up the steps to knock on the door.
“Witch sister, I’ve come to play with you!”
