Chapter 130
Chapter 130
“Clearly, this was a premeditated attack.” Tu Nan’s expression was grim. “Why would they try to impersonate hospital staff?”
The man seemed to remember something and began fumbling around his person. His face turned even paler and more distressed than before.
“My documents were stolen!” He clutched his head, sounding on the verge of a breakdown. “I’m finished.”
“Don’t worry.” Wendy finally found an opening to speak. She handed the papers to the man. “The documents are right here, safe and sound.”
“Thank God!” The man took the documents and glanced through them, his expression relaxing considerably.
“It’s obvious they wanted to pose as hospital staff to take away the patient scheduled for surgery today,” the security guard said in a steady voice. “Fortunately, they didn’t succeed.”
As they spoke, the other man who had fainted finally stirred and woke up groggily. He had a Hooknose and high cheekbones, giving him a somber appearance.
“What happened…” Hooknose looked at the scene before him in a daze, unable to make sense of the situation.
“Never mind that,” the other man said urgently. “Hurry and bring Little Red Riding Hood here. We need to get her to the operating room immediately.”
“Of course.” Tu Nan nodded and said with a smile, “Please show us your ID Badges. Once we’ve verified them, we’ll go fetch her.”
The two men handed their ID Badges to Tu Nan and Wendy.
After checking them, Tu Nan nodded.
“Everything is in order,” Wendy confirmed meticulously.
“Then I’ll have to trouble Sister Wendy to go and bring Little Red Riding Hood here.” Tu Nan looked at Wendy.
Wendy was highly dissatisfied that Tu Nan dared to order her around, but with so many people present, she couldn’t lash out. She could only pick up the Oil Lamp and head toward the ward.
“In that case, we’ll be leaving now,” the security guard spoke up. “Those two impostors might not have gone far. We need to conduct a thorough patrol.”
“No.” The man stopped him. “What if those two attack us again while we’re moving Little Red Riding Hood? You must stay by our side and protect us!”
His words were not without merit. The security guard hesitated for a moment before agreeing.
The group stood there waiting for Wendy to return with Little Red Riding Hood.
Logically, this should have only taken a few minutes. However, a full ten minutes passed, and Wendy was still nowhere to be seen.
The man began to grow anxious.
“Why is she taking so long?”
“Perhaps something unexpected happened,” Tu Nan said softly. “Wait here for a moment, everyone. I’ll go take a look.”
She picked up her Oil Lamp and was just about to set off when Wendy finally appeared at the end of the corridor, arriving late.
She was pale, drenched in sweat, and running toward them while gasping for breath.
“What’s the matter?” Hooknose’s expression soured, his eyes dark as he glared at Wendy. “What took you so long? Where is Little Red Riding Hood?”
“It’s bad…” Wendy’s eyes were wide with terror. “Little… Little Red Riding Hood is gone!”
“What?” The other man stepped forward. “Slow down. How could she be gone?”
“I…” Wendy panted, her entire body trembling, her speech becoming incoherent. “I walked to Little Red Riding Hood’s ward, and everything seemed normal… I went inside, and oh… there was clearly someone in her bed. I mean, it didn’t look empty…”
“Anyway, I pulled back the covers and found there was no one inside-only two pillows.”
Wendy had a long face, looking like she was about to cry. “I thought maybe she went to the restroom, so I ran there immediately to check, but… there was no one there…”
“Have you checked all the wards?” Tu Nan pressed.
Wendy nodded. “I even looked under the beds. Little Red Riding Hood has just vanished into thin air. It’s absolutely unbelievable.”
“How can a person just vanish into thin air!” Hooknose’s expression was incredibly grim. “If you ask me, your Custody Department was negligent and let her escape!”
“You’re talking nonsense,” Wendy said, her eyes widening. “We just did our rounds. I’m certain Little Red Riding Hood was staying safely in her room then. In such a short amount of time, and with this being the only way out, how could she have escaped?”
“Little Red Riding Hood was indeed in her room just now, right before those two imposters arrived,” Tu Nan confirmed. “Unless she can turn invisible, it’s impossible for her to have escaped with so many people around.”
Of course, Little Red Riding Hood couldn’t turn invisible.
Unless…
“In any case, the patient is missing now. This must be reported.”
Everyone present looked miserable.
One of the security guards stayed behind to watch them, while the other went to notify the rest of the staff.
Ten minutes later, the Nurse’s Station became crowded and noisy.
Wendy looked fearfully at the large dog behind Daisy; she had always been terrified of such fierce animals.
“The patient escaped?” The Head Nurse’s massive eyes swept over everyone present, her presence naturally commanding and stern. “How is that possible?”
Her gaze flickered over Tu Nan, lingering for a second before immediately moving elsewhere.
Hans’s breathing was heavy, sounding particularly distinct in the stifling environment. His wet black nose twitched slightly, as if he had caught a scent.
A faint, lingering scent of roses seemed to hang in the air.
He began to grow restless.
“What’s wrong with Hans today?” Daisy’s voice was airy as she tugged at the leash holding Hans. “When I went to the Garden to get him just now, he kept barking in one direction. It took forever to pull him away.”
Tu Nan’s heart tightened.
A dog’s sense of smell was the most sensitive; he had likely discovered something.
The Head Nurse gave her a cold look. “Miss Daisy, I’m afraid now is not the time to worry about this beast.”
Daisy covered her mouth and chuckled, though there was no warmth in her eyes. “With all due respect, Head Nurse, I’m afraid there isn’t much difference between him and you.”
“You!” The fury in the Head Nurse’s eyes shot toward Daisy like something physical.
The people around them lowered their heads and fell silent, not even daring to breathe loudly.
“Tell me what happened,” Daisy said, looking coldly at Wendy.
Trembling, Wendy recounted the entire sequence of events, emphasizing that Little Red Riding Hood was safely in her room when they were doing their night rounds.
“Then that’s strange.” Daisy’s voice was like ice. “Since the person was staying safely in the ward, how could she suddenly vanish?”
Tu Nan looked hesitant, as if she had something she wanted to say.
“Tu Nan, what’s with that expression?” The Head Nurse glanced at her. “Do you know something?”
Her questioning was aggressive, frightening Tu Nan into taking a step back.
“Head Nurse, the most important thing right now is to find the patient.” Daisy glanced at her, then looked at the shivering Wendy. “Bring the clothes that Little Red Riding Hood has worn.”
