Chapter 123
Chapter 123
“It was also around that time that Little Red Riding Hood began taking the medication you gave her. Her emotions did indeed stabilize, but this drug has a very powerful side effect-or perhaps, was that side effect the very reason it was created?” Tu Nan looked at her steadily, speaking at a measured pace.
“But regardless, the medication did spare Little Red Riding Hood from a lobotomy.”
The Head Nurse let out a cold sneer. “It seems you went through quite a few files last night.”
Tu Nan nodded honestly. She placed the key she had been clutching onto the desk in front of the Head Nurse and said sincerely, “It’s true that I stole the key. I had to resort to some necessary measures for that, and I know I have offended you. I apologize.”
The Head Nurse glanced at the key on the desk, then glared venomously at Tu Nan.
“Do you have any idea? Just for stealing the key to the Archives Room, I could ensure you never become a permanent employee.”
“In that case, what kind of punishment would you receive for intentionally framing a colleague and taking her position after getting her dismissed?” Tu Nan was not flustered; she even appeared somewhat at ease.
The Head Nurse’s expression changed drastically. “You-!” she blurted out.
She stopped abruptly, forcing the rest of her words back down her throat.
“You’re making baseless accusations,” the Head Nurse said gloomily.
“Whether they are baseless or not, you know better than I do.” Tu Nan watched her reaction. Her initial seventy percent certainty had now become a full hundred. “The night York was in the Archives Room, I found this pill in his pocket and forced him to tell me its effects and its source. Care to guess… what he said?”
In truth, York hadn’t said a thing, but he was long gone from the Fairy Tale Hospital. Even if the Head Nurse suspected a lie and wanted to verify it, she had no way to do so.
Tu Nan shifted all the blame onto York with a clear conscience.
“I’m afraid your deal with him isn’t exactly a secret,” Tu Nan said. “A man like that isn’t worth trusting.”
“He dared!” Fury erupted in the Head Nurse’s eyes. “How could he do that?”
One of the Head Nurse’s tentacles slammed onto the desk. With a loud *thwack*, faint cracks actually appeared on the wooden surface.
Tu Nan’s heart hammered in her chest, but she took a step back without showing any outward sign of fear.
“What do you want?” The Head Nurse looked up at her, her yellow eyes unblinking and radiating a sense of danger.
That heavy blow just now might have looked like an emotional outburst caused by rage, but in reality, it was a display of intimidation directed at Tu Nan.
The Head Nurse was her direct superior; offending her would bring no benefits whatsoever, even though it currently seemed like she had already offended her quite severely.
“You’ve misunderstood.” Tu Nan smiled. “The reason I’m bringing this up isn’t to threaten you. On the contrary, I’m on your side. Telling you this is a gesture of my sincerity.”
The Head Nurse looked at her skeptically, but regardless, Tu Nan’s words had earned her the chance to continue the conversation. The Head Nurse sat back down and watched her silently.
Tu Nan took a deep breath and continued, “I will keep this secret in my heart forever and will never let anyone else know. In fact, the reason I came here today and said all this is because I have a favor to ask of you.”
“Oh?” The Head Nurse sneered. “Yesterday you stuffed me into a jar and stole my key, and today you come here and say all this, only to tell me at the end that you have a favor to ask?”
Tu Nan gave a bitter smile.
“Stealing the key was indeed a desperate measure. If I hadn’t done it, how could I have known whether you were worthy of my trust?”
“What exactly are you trying to do?”
“I want to help Little Red Riding Hood leave the hospital,” Tu Nan said without hesitation.
The Head Nurse’s gaze suddenly sharpened, piercing her like a sharp knife.
“Do you know what you’re saying?” The Head Nurse sneered. “Since you know how the previous nurse was dismissed, you should also know what the consequences will be if you’re caught doing this.”
“I am well aware.” Tu Nan fully demonstrated her sincerity. “So, even if we are discovered, this matter will be my doing from start to finish. It has nothing to do with you.”
The tentacles beneath the Head Nurse’s body unconsciously intertwined-a sign she only showed when she was conflicted.
Tu Nan couldn’t see what was happening under the desk, so she could only wait anxiously for her answer.
“Why do you think I would help you?” the Head Nurse suddenly asked.
After reading the files last night, the answer to who exactly had told Little Red Riding Hood’s parents about the hospital was already obvious.
There were very few people in this hospital who could have known the rules and regulations and had been secretly helping Little Red Riding Hood.
It just so happened that on the night she was on duty, the Head Nurse had conspicuously sent her a cup of coffee.
She hadn’t understood what the Head Nurse was trying to do at the time, but thinking back, that coffee most likely contained a sedative.
She had met Little Red Riding Hood’s parents that night and intentionally concealed it, while the Head Nurse had meaningfully asked her the next day if she had encountered any other accidents and even warned her not to get too close to Daisy.
Daisy, after all, was on the hospital’s side.
“Because you have been helping Little Red Riding Hood all along,” Tu Nan said. “Although I don’t know why, my intuition tells me that you will definitely help me.”
“Intuition?” The Head Nurse scoffed and shook her head. “If you intend to rely on intuition to help Little Red Riding Hood, you’ll die a miserable death.”
Tu Nan was slightly taken aback; the Head Nurse seemed to be implying something.
“What do you mean?” she asked tentatively.
“Let’s get one thing straight: if this is exposed, it has nothing to do with me,” the Head Nurse said coldly.
“Of course.” Tu Nan curled her lips into a slight smile.
With the Head Nurse’s help, everything would become much easier.
“There is a young noble lady whose kidneys match Little Red Riding Hood’s. The hospital plans to perform the surgery within the next two days.” The Head Nurse dropped this heavy news in a calm tone.
“Is the hospital really that reckless?” Tu Nan frowned. “Aren’t they afraid of being exposed?”
The Head Nurse was amused by her naivety, though there wasn’t a hint of a smile in her eyes.
“Do you know who is behind this hospital?” she asked coldly. “Who can guarantee they’ll live their whole life without illness or disaster? With this hospital, they can be free of all worries.”
Backing this hospital were countless members of the royalty and the Nobility.
They were selfish, cold, heartless, and all-powerful, yet they were terrified of death. To avoid it, they would not hesitate to sacrifice the lives of innocent people.
In their eyes, a Commoner was merely a useful ant.
“So, you need to understand how dangerous what you’re doing is.” The Head Nurse narrowed her eyes at her. “If they discover that Little Red Riding Hood’s disappearance is related to you, those angry members of the Nobility will crush you like a bug.”
