Chapter 131
Chapter 131
Wendy brought over a piece of clothing that Little Red Riding Hood had worn for Hans to sniff.
Her complexion was ghastly. It wasn’t just because Little Red Riding Hood had escaped; worse still, because she had repeatedly disturbed Lepei’s sleep, the patient had threatened to file a formal complaint against her.
She couldn’t understand it. Everything had been going perfectly fine, so how did it devolve into this?
A flicker of resentment flashed in her eyes. This was all Tu Nan’s fault.
Hans lowered his head and sniffed at the clothes.
Wendy patted his head. “Good boy. Remember this scent and help me find her.”
Hans lifted his head, his nose twitching slightly as he searched for something in the air. Suddenly, he broke into a wild sprint in one direction.
It was toward the stairwell.
It seemed Little Red Riding Hood had indeed escaped the hospital.
Daisy’s gaze darkened as she gave chase in the direction Hans had gone.
The others followed close behind.
They trailed Hans all the way to the Garden. The Garden was wide and open, and the scent had been scattered by the wind, but Hans was no ordinary dog. He tilted his head back, sensing the air for a moment, and then headed in a specific direction without hesitation.
Watching the direction he was heading, Tu Nan’s heart involuntarily leaped into her throat.
Hans approached a thicket of bushes and buried his head inside, rooting around forcefully. A moment later, he backed out with a small scrap of torn fabric in his mouth, which he placed in Daisy’s hand.
Daisy’s expression was grim.
Holding the scrap of fabric that had been snagged by the brambles, she stepped forward and parted the bushes.
Everyone looked over in unison.
A modest-sized dog hole was hidden behind the bushes, and the surrounding grass bore obvious signs of being trampled. The grass was still damp with the night’s moisture; clearly, it had been flattened very recently.
Needless to say, Little Red Riding Hood certainly wasn’t waiting for them on the other side of the hole.
Tu Nan’s heart finally settled back into her chest.
“Brilliant.” Daisy clapped her hands, laughing despite her fury, though anyone could hear the extreme, suppressed rage in her voice. “What a truly brilliant escape.”
She turned around, her dark gaze scanning every person present inch by inch before finally landing on the Head Nurse.
“Head Nurse, tell me-who exactly helped her escape?”
The Head Nurse met her gaze without a hint of fear. “I have been in the dormitory all night. How would I know?”
Daisy let out a cold snort. She threw the scrap of fabric violently to the ground and stepped on it, grinding it into the dirt.
“Everyone involved in tonight’s matter, come with me!”
The night was deep and the dew was heavy; the Garden was no place for an interrogation. In the end, the Head Nurse graciously offered up her office.
The lights flickered on in the office, illuminating the varied expressions on everyone’s faces.
“Tonight’s incident was clearly a premeditated, malicious event.” The Head Nurse’s face was unsightly as her tentacles slapped against the floor. She addressed the group before her, “All of you are under suspicion.”
“The patient, Little Red Riding Hood, is just an ordinary seven-year-old girl. How did she manage to navigate through the hospital alone in the middle of the night to reach the Garden, and how did she even know the location of that dog hole?”
Daisy scrutinized each of their expressions intently.
Tu Nan’s expression looked somewhat unnatural.
“Tu Nan!” the Head Nurse’s voice barked suddenly. “You’ve looked like you’ve had something to say for a while now. What exactly do you know?”
Tu Nan was startled. Her eyes widened, and she cast a hesitant glance at Wendy beside her before stammering, “I… well, I wouldn’t dare speak out of turn.”
“What’s there to be afraid of?” the Head Nurse glared at her. “Speak up.”
“Tonight, Sister Wendy and I were doing our rounds together. Everything was fine at first, but when we reached Ward 403, Sister Wendy suddenly insisted on going inside to take a look.”
Wendy’s face instantly paled. She looked at Tu Nan in disbelief, reaching out and roaring, “You dare frame me?”
“She hasn’t even finished yet,” Daisy interrupted her. “What are you so anxious about?”
Tu Nan looked as if she were terrified by Wendy’s words. Her lips trembled slightly, and she didn’t dare speak further.
“This must be a misunderstanding,” the Head Nurse suddenly spoke up. “Wendy is a senior employee. Why would she do such a thing?”
Daisy looked at the two of them suspiciously.
Since the Head Nurse knew Wendy was on her side, why was she speaking up for her?
Daisy had always been paranoid; at this moment, she couldn’t help but doubt the relationship between the two.
Could it be that Wendy was a chess piece the Head Nurse had intentionally placed by her side?
And why was Wendy’s reaction so extreme just now? Had she really done something?
Thinking of this, she looked at Tu Nan. “Continue.”
“I…” Tu Nan looked at the Head Nurse and Wendy with difficulty.
“What are you afraid of!” Daisy raised her voice. “With me here, no one can make things difficult for you.”
Tu Nan took a deep breath and continued her story.
“I advised Sister Wendy not to go looking for trouble. During the night check, I saw Little Red Riding Hood climb into bed with my own eyes. It was impossible for her not to be in the ward. But Sister Wendy ignored me and insisted on going in to check. I’m just an Intern Nurse, after all, so I had to listen to her.”
Wendy’s expression grew uglier by the second, yet she didn’t dare interrupt Tu Nan.
She was fuming, feeling that she was being completely wronged.
Tu Nan continued, “After we went in, Little Red Riding Hood was lying peacefully in bed. Then we left and continued to the other wards. On the way back, I saw…”
“What did you see?” Daisy pressed.
Tu Nan’s expression was conflicted, but she finally made up her mind and said, “I saw Sister Wendy deliberately return to Ward 403, and… her hand seemed to turn the doorknob. At the time, I thought she was just checking if the door was locked tight, so I didn’t think much of it. But thinking back now…”
Everyone present knew that to prevent patients from wandering off, the ward doors were locked from the outside at night and could only be opened from the exterior.
“You’re lying through your teeth!” Wendy could no longer control herself. She rushed toward Tu Nan and grabbed her by the collar. “How dare you slander me! Was it you who let Little Red Riding Hood out and then framed me for it?!”
“Enough!” The Head Nurse extended a tentacle and swept Wendy away. “This is just her side of the story. You haven’t been convicted yet, so why are you getting so worked up?”
Wendy’s eyes were wide with rage as she struggled violently.
Daisy’s gaze shifted between the several of them.
Everyone looked suspicious.
“That’s not all.” Tu Nan finally steeled her resolve, spilling the rest of the words like beans from a bag.
“When those two people posing as staff came to take Little Red Riding Hood away, Sister Wendy only checked their documents but didn’t check their ID Badges. She even stopped me when I wanted to check them.”
“When did I ever stop you? I only…” Wendy’s voice suddenly weakened.
How could she have known that someone would actually dare to impersonate hospital staff?
