Chapter 122
Chapter 122
The Head Nurse’s file didn’t contain much information. She had arrived at Fairy Tale Hospital a year ago, though she wasn’t the Head Nurse back then. She had initially worked in the Logistics Department. She had requested a transfer several times, but her requests were always rejected on the grounds that there were no suitable positions available at the time.
That same year, the Former Head Nurse was discovered helping York escape the hospital and was dismissed. Following that, she got her wish and took over the position of Head Nurse, which she had held ever since.
Her records showed she was diligent and never slackened in her duties.
Tu Nan couldn’t see anything particularly special or suspicious in her file. She put the Head Nurse’s records back and, after a moment’s thought, pulled out Little Red Riding Hood’s file.
Little Red Riding Hood’s file was much thicker than the Head Nurse’s and contained far more useful information.
Tu Nan read through the documents in her hand meticulously, her brow furrowing deeper and deeper.
Between the lines of this file, every inch of paper seemed to scream two words: human consumption.
When Little Red Riding Hood first arrived, she did indeed show symptoms of mental confusion-otherwise, her parents wouldn’t have sent her to the hospital. However, her symptoms hadn’t been severe; she could have been discharged after a bit of treatment. Yet, under the deliberate guidance of Fairy Tale Hospital, her condition grew progressively worse.
[After multiple experiments, the patient’s condition has gradually deteriorated, presenting symptoms of mania and depression.]
[Following the death of Nurse Xia, the patient has suffered frequent emotional breakdowns and even displayed violent tendencies toward others, meeting the requirements for a Lobotomy. After communicating with the patient’s parents, they requested a meeting with the patient before making a final decision.]
…
A Lobotomy.
Tu Nan’s gaze turned sharp.
This procedure had been extremely common in the Middle Ages, widely used on psychiatric patients who refused to comply with management.
After a Lobotomy, a person would lose many of their functions and become a walking corpse. Naturally, their emotions would no longer spiral out of control.
Such a procedure was utterly inhumane, but for Fairy Tale Hospital, all they wanted was a mobile organ bank that could contribute its body parts at any time.
Perhaps that was their true goal.
Tu Nan’s hand unconsciously gripped the corner of the file, her heart filled with absolute fury.
Little Red Riding Hood was just an innocent little girl, yet she was being treated like this. And there were likely countless others just like her in this hospital.
She closed the file and took a deep breath to steady her emotions before continuing to read.
On the eve of the meeting with her parents, Little Red Riding Hood’s emotional state had suddenly stabilized. After repeated testing, it was confirmed that she no longer suffered from emotional outbursts.
Because of this, Little Red Riding Hood’s parents strongly opposed their daughter undergoing a Lobotomy. Perhaps to appease the parents, or perhaps for some other reason, the hospital temporarily canceled the surgical plans.
Little Red Riding Hood had only managed to stabilize her emotions after taking medicine given to her by the Head Nurse. In other words, the Head Nurse really had saved Little Red Riding Hood, preventing the tragedy of her becoming a hollow shell.
Tu Nan placed Little Red Riding Hood’s file back in its original spot.
Regardless of the Head Nurse’s motives-whether she was after something or simply couldn’t bear to see it happen-Tu Nan needed to have a talk with her.
If Little Red Riding Hood was to leave the hospital safely, the Head Nurse’s cooperation was indispensable.
*
The Head Nurse was currently furious.
She didn’t know who was so bold as to exploit her habits, locking her inside a barrel for an entire night and stealing the key to the Archives Room.
A total humiliation. It was an absolute disgrace!
Most importantly, she had no clue who had stolen the key. The theft of the Archives Room key was a major blunder, one serious enough to cost her her position.
While she pondered who could be so bold, she used two tentacles to write her report.
Knock, knock, knock.
Wondering who would come looking for her at this hour, she frowned, looked up, and said, “Come in.”
Tu Nan pushed the door open and turned to close it behind her.
“Tu Nan?” The Head Nurse’s eyes flickered with surprise when she saw who it was, and her brow furrowed. “Is there something you need?”
“There is something I’ve specifically come to ask you about, Head Nurse,” Tu Nan said softly as she walked toward the desk.
“What is it?” One of the Head Nurse’s tentacles held a pen, deftly dipping it into some ink before writing fluently across the paper.
Tu Nan glanced down at the report the Head Nurse was writing.
[On the Sustainable Development Space of the Hospital]
She really was dedicated.
Tu Nan withdrew her gaze calmly and spoke.
“I want to know-were you the one who told Little Red Riding Hood’s parents that she was about to undergo surgery?”
The Head Nurse’s tentacles stopped moving.
She set down her pen and looked up at her.
The Head Nurse’s gaze was imposing, immediately making Tu Nan feel a significant amount of pressure.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about,” the Head Nurse said coldly.
“The night before last, Little Red Riding Hood’s parents entered the hospital.”
“Oh?” The Head Nurse blinked slowly, her tone unreadable. “Then why didn’t you hand them over to security?”
“I believe they were only able to enter the hospital with someone’s help,” Tu Nan said, neither humble nor arrogant. “And I suspect that person was you, Head Nurse.”
The Head Nurse was so angry she laughed. “Do you have any idea what you’re saying?”
“You came to see me the night before last and brought me a cup of coffee to help me stay awake,” Tu Nan said. “Strangely, I asked the other nurses who have worked night shifts, and none of them have ever received coffee from you.”
“What does that prove?” The Head Nurse set her pen down. “I kindly bring you coffee, and you suspect me?”
“Of course, there’s more than just that.” Tu Nan met the Head Nurse’s dark gaze and continued, “Little Red Riding Hood’s parents knew her room number, and they were very familiar with the security guards’ patrol schedule, managing to sneak into the hospital at the exact right moment.”
“These are things that couldn’t be done without someone who knows this hospital inside and out.”
The Head Nurse showed no signs of panic, merely nodding. “Well said. But what makes you so sure that person was me?”
“I can’t be certain who it was; I can only choose the most likely candidate from all the possibilities.” Tu Nan looked at her. “I looked at Little Red Riding Hood’s file. After Xia Xia died, the hospital originally scheduled a surgery for her.”
The Head Nurse’s expression suddenly became terrifying.
Tu Nan took a deep breath, trying her best to ignore the murderous glare as she continued, “The hospital decided to perform a lobotomy on her to control her mental illness.”
“But on the eve of the surgery, the Head Nurse submitted a report stating that Little Red Riding Hood’s condition was under control and the surgery was no longer necessary.”
“And so, the surgery was shelved.”
The Head Nurse said nothing. In the office, only Tu Nan’s voice continued to speak steadily.
