Chapter 128
Chapter 128
“Humanity…” Daisy let out an ambiguous chuckle. “But she isn’t human, after all.”
Tu Nan found it quite ironic.
If the Head Nurse, who wasn’t even human, could still protect the innocent, why was Daisy-a fellow human-so intent on harming her own kind?
She took a deep breath.
“But wasn’t she hired by the Dean?” Tu Nan asked, feigning curiosity. “Does the Dean just not care?”
Daisy shook her head. “The Dean is simply too trusting. I’ve told him many times, but he always thinks I’m joking.”
Tu Nan curled her lip slightly. “Is that so?”
“There’s something I have to tell you.” Seeing that she had laid enough groundwork, Daisy finally got to the main point. “Little Red Riding Hood is scheduled for surgery tonight. You’re her primary nurse, so I felt you needed to know.”
Tu Nan feigned a look of surprise. “So soon? I haven’t even gotten a Positive Review Badge from her yet.”
“That’s exactly what I’m worried about, which is why I’m warning you.” Daisy painted herself as a helpful, kind-hearted girl. “I’m afraid the Head Nurse might target Little Red Riding Hood again. If the surgery doesn’t go well… you should probably ask her for that Positive Review Badge sooner rather than later.”
It was a clever manipulation. If something really did happen to Little Red Riding Hood on the operating table, Tu Nan would be predisposed to believe the Head Nurse was the one who harmed her.
Tu Nan nodded, indicating she understood.
“I’m on the night shift tonight,” she said. “Could it be that the Head Nurse is doing this on purpose?”
“Perhaps.” Daisy patted her on the shoulder. “I just hope you’ll be careful. If anything truly unexpected happens, I’ll definitely be on your side.”
Tu Nan gave her a grateful smile.
“Daisy, you’re so kind.” She took Daisy’s hand. “Then I’ll be counting on you regarding my permanent placement.”
Daisy nodded with a smile, speaking in a measured tone. “No matter how powerful the Head Nurse is, she can’t stop a patient from giving you a Positive Review Badge. As long as you can get that badge, I won’t give her the chance to trip you up.”
Ultimately, it was nothing more than an empty promise.
She spoke of helping Tu Nan, but in reality, she hadn’t sacrificed a thing.
Tu Nan lowered her head, an imperceptible cold sneer touching the corners of her mouth.
“Then… thank you so much.”
*
Perhaps Tu Nan’s acting was truly convincing, because Daisy believed that she and the Head Nurse were genuinely at odds. The plan was proceeding smoothly.
Time always seemed to move exceptionally fast in such moments. The day passed in an atmosphere that appeared calm and ripple-free.
Tonight was the main event.
“See you tomorrow.”
As the last nurse departed, only Tu Nan and Wendy remained at the Nurse’s Station.
They weren’t well-acquainted and had no interest in small talk, so both sat quietly at their respective desks.
It was barely past ten o’clock. The surgery wouldn’t take place until after midnight, which meant Little Red Riding Hood would still be in her ward for the time being.
Everything was like the sea before a storm-seemingly tranquil on the surface, but with violent undercurrents and hidden surges churning beneath.
Inadvertently, the clock hand finally swept toward the twelve.
Tu Nan took a deep breath and stood up. She looked at Wendy nearby and asked with a smile, “I’m planning to do the night rounds. Let’s go together. It’s better to get it over with early so we can relax.”
She wasn’t afraid of Wendy refusing her. Today was special; Daisy would have certainly told Wendy to be cautious, and Wendy would never allow Tu Nan to check the rooms alone.
And what she wanted was exactly for Wendy to go with her.
“Sure.”
As expected, Wendy did not decline the invitation. She stood up quite readily.
Wanting to keep an eye on her was one reason, but the other was that someone would be coming to take Little Red Riding Hood away today. It was best to resolve other matters first and then wait calmly for their arrival.
Having reached an agreement, the two of them headed toward the wards.
Each carrying an Oil Lamp, they walked slowly through the pitch-black corridor.
The wards were quiet; the patients had all fallen into a deep sleep.
When they reached Ward 403, Tu Nan noticed a flicker of movement from the person beside her.
She raised her Oil Lamp to the window of the door, cast a casual glance inside, nodded to Wendy, and prepared to move on to the next room.
“Wait.” Wendy pulled her back suspiciously. “You just took a casual glance. Are you sure everyone is in there?”
Tu Nan looked at her, puzzled. “When I did the rounds tonight, I saw Little Red Riding Hood climb into bed with my own eyes. What could be the problem?”
“It’s better to be cautious.” Wendy pushed her aside, lifted her Oil Lamp, and peered into the room.
The blanket on Little Red Riding Hood’s bed was slightly raised; nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
“I told you it was fine.” Tu Nan glanced at her. “Look, isn’t she in bed?”
Wendy frowned. “Why can’t I see her head?”
“Maybe she’s covered herself with the blanket,” Tu Nan said nonchalantly. “Little girls like to do that. It’s not unusual.”
“No, Little Red Riding Hood is scheduled for surgery tonight. We can’t be careless.” Wendy made a move to open the door. “I’m going in to check.”
“Wait.” Tu Nan stopped her. “It’s so late. You’ll disturb their rest if you go in.”
“I’m just taking one look. What’s the harm?” Wendy impatiently brushed her hand away.
Tu Nan let out a cold laugh. “You don’t care, of course, but this is the ward I’m responsible for. What if they wake up, get angry, and file a complaint against me?”
“I can’t worry about that. Ensuring the patient’s status is more important.” Wendy gave her a suspicious look. “You keep trying to stop me. Do you have a guilty conscience?”
Tu Nan laughed in exasperation. “What would I have to be guilty about? You’re being ridiculous.”
The more Wendy looked at her, the more suspicious she became. She resolutely opened the door and walked inside.
Behind her, the corners of Tu Nan’s mouth curled upward as she followed her in.
Wendy walked to Little Red Riding Hood’s bedside and held the Oil Lamp over the headboard, her gaze growing even more skeptical.
Who wraps themselves up that tightly while sleeping?
She reached out and whipped back the blanket-
Curled into a ball, Little Red Riding Hood flinched at the sudden rush of cold air. Her eyelids fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Bleary-eyed, she couldn’t help but yawn, but she screamed in terror the moment she saw the person standing by her bed.
“Ah-!”
Wendy’s expression instantly turned sour.
She scrambled to cover Little Red Riding Hood’s mouth but forgot she was still holding the Oil Lamp. Little Red Riding Hood didn’t recognize her and scrambled across the bed in fear. The Oil Lamp in Wendy’s hand accidentally fell to the floor with a sharp clatter.
“Tu Nan, what are you just standing there for? Help me!” she said anxiously.
“Sister Tu Nan?” Little Red Riding Hood stopped when she heard the familiar name.
Tu Nan dropped her amused expression and finally stepped forward, whispering, “Little Red Riding Hood, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”
Little Red Riding Hood sat on the bed, looking at them in a daze.
“…So noisy.”
Just as Wendy breathed a sigh of relief, an impatient female voice suddenly came from behind her.
Her entire body stiffened. She turned around apprehensively to find the Blonde Girl sitting on her bed, glaring at them with an unfriendly gaze.
