Chapter 6

The little boy seemed curious about the crates. He was tugging at the canvas, trying to peek inside.

Shi Kang grabbed him by the arm. The boy looked about the same age as my son, but he was as skinny as a reed, which made his round head seem especially large.

Before the boy could even react, Shi Kang yanked him by the arm and flung him aside.

Luckily, I was right there. I took one step over and caught him.

The child was clearly seriously ill. His pale, bluish hands were covered in needle marks.

“You fucking-” I wanted to settle the score with Shi Kang, but I was afraid of scaring the child.

I looked down and saw the little boy with tears in his eyes, looking like he wanted to cry but was trying his hardest to hold it in.

“Don’t be scared, kid. Uncle will take you somewhere else to play.”

I picked him up. When the boy saw my face, he seemed a little frightened again, but his surprise still won out over his fear. “Uncle, you’re so tall.”

I smiled. I didn’t know what illness the child had, but he weighed less than half as much as my son.

“The worker uncles over here are busy. Where’s your family? I’ll take you to them.”

The little boy looked back at my truck and pointed at it. “My dad has a truck like that too. It’s super tall and super big.”

I carried him to the cab and set him in the driver’s seat. The boy was thrilled. “It’s just like my dad’s! My dad let me sit in his too!”

“Then where’s your dad? Is he here?”

The boy shook his head. “Dad went to make money. Auntie told me that once I get better, I can go home and be with Dad again.”

The child seemed to be from an ordinary family, not some rich household.

While I was still wondering about it, someone suddenly called from behind us, “Xiao Hang! Xiao Hang? Are you here?”

“Auntie!” The little boy immediately answered when he heard the voice.

I quickly carried him out. When I turned around, I saw an exquisitely dressed pregnant woman.

Several nurses followed behind her, carefully protecting her the entire way.

“Xiao Hang?” The newcomer froze visibly when she saw me, and she seemed slightly nervous.

I set the child down. Xiao Hang instantly ran toward the woman with an excited look on his face. “Auntie, that uncle has a big truck just like my dad’s! He let me get in and play in it just now!”

The woman hurriedly pulled Xiao Hang into her arms and carefully checked him over from head to toe. Only then did she say gently, “How could you run off again? Everyone in the ward was looking for you. Didn’t we agree that you’d focus on getting better, take your medicine properly, and not make the nurse sisters worry?”

Xiao Hang scratched his head, a little embarrassed. “I saw a truck like my dad’s from upstairs. I thought my dad had come.”

“Your dad is working. He’s doing his best for Xiao Hang. He’ll come see you in a few days.”

The woman patted Xiao Hang’s head. Just then, her breathing suddenly grew a little rapid.

The nurses with her immediately became anxious. “Madam, now that we’ve found Xiao Hang, let’s hurry back to the ward. You need plenty of bed rest.”

Judging by the woman’s belly, she was already quite far along. She had someone take Xiao Hang away, nodded to me in acknowledgment, and was then helped away by the nurses as well.

I didn’t know what relationship Xiao Hang had with that woman, but she did seem like a very kind, approachable rich lady.

On the day the Ghost Gate Opens, those of us who drove long-haul trucks knew better than to travel at night.

But that night, I was driving alone down the road to an old public cemetery.
