Chapter 18
I had no time to deal with him, because just then, something else appeared on the road.
It looked human, but it had no arms, and its messy hair covered its face.
At first, it was standing outside the guardrail. I sped past it.
But very soon, it appeared again.
This time, it had already climbed over the guardrail.
I passed it again, but moments later, it showed up in front of my headlights!
Every time it appeared, it was one step closer to my car.
At last, this time, it was right outside my window.
It seemed like it was about to brush past the side of my car.
But the instant I was about to drive by, its head flew up-
That head, wrapped in tangled hair, passed straight through my car window!
I heard screams-men, women, the old, the young, all mixed together.
As it lunged at me, I saw that behind the lifted hair were countless faces packed tightly together!
It was too late to swing the whip. I simply gripped the steering wheel with my left hand and slammed my right fist into that thing.
I punched it into the windshield, and it hit with a loud “Duang!”
I grabbed the Soul-Whip and used the butt end like a blade, stabbing it in hard.
The shrill screams almost pierced my eardrums, but the thing seemed to have lost the strength to fly again.
I simply rolled down the window, grabbed it, and hurled the whole thing out!
Liu Wu stared at me the entire time as if he were looking at a monster.
But neither of us had a chance to breathe easy, because by then, the slopes on both sides of the road were packed densely with things.
“I told you you’d regret it…” Liu Wu said in a low voice.
But in the next second, an unusual force rippled across the entire road.
The shadows that had been eager to pounce all began retreating against their will.
A few minutes later, we couldn’t see anything at all.
The car was on the road into the mountains, yet even the wind had stopped.
I didn’t dare relax in the slightest.
I knew that if something like this was happening, then something even more powerful had probably arrived.
I sped up, practically flooring the gas pedal.
Just then, an icy hand landed on my shoulder.
In the back seat of our car, a woman had appeared without a sound.
She wore an extremely formal ancient ceremonial robe, her hair coiled into a round bun and studded all over with jade ornaments.
I didn’t dare look at her face. It should have been an extraordinarily beautiful face.
But no one would dare look. I could hear Liu Wu’s breathing growing heavier and rougher.
The woman slowly leaned forward, and that icy aura drew closer and closer to us.
At the same time, I heard the seven cribs in the rear compartment-cradles that had already been secured-begin shaking wildly, as if they were about to tear free from the cargo hold!
But at that moment, I couldn’t move.
The hand resting on my shoulder grew heavier and heavier. Waves of needle-like pain stabbed into my bones, as if they were about to flow with my blood straight into my heart.
Liu Wu was in the same state as me, but there was one difference: in his hand, he was gripping a wooden figure bound with willow twigs.
“Long Changdong, you brought this on yourself. Don’t blame me.”
The wooden figure suddenly seemed to come alive and lunged straight at me.
The instant the wooden figure touched me, the woman behind us actually let Liu Wu go. Both her hands wrapped toward me at the same time.
For a moment, it felt as if hundreds of needles had stabbed into my flesh all at once.
A vicious fury surged up inside me.
I wasn’t afraid to die, but I couldn’t die at the hands of something like this.
I bit the tip of my tongue until it bled, turned my head, and sprayed blood all over the woman’s face!
Red smoke rose from her face as if it had been scorched, but she only retreated slightly.
Her hands, tipped with sharp nails, clawed straight toward the spot where my heart was.
I clenched the Soul-Whip in my hand hard, letting the wood pierce my palm as blood flowed out.
The woman raked her hand viciously across my chest. For an instant, it felt as though my heart had stopped beating.
But my movement did not stop. My body still gripped the Soul-Whip and carved a bloody gust through the air!
At that moment, my savage expression made me look even more like an asura.
My whip struck the woman’s face, and that snow-white face split instantly into an upper and lower half.
I heard a scream so agonized it seemed to tear the heart and lungs apart. The woman twisted into a cloud of white smoke and vanished.

On the day the Ghost Gate Opens, those of us who drove long-haul trucks knew better than to travel at night.
But that night, I was driving alone down the road to an old public cemetery.
