Chapter 19
Chapter 19
Liu Wu pressed himself tightly against the car door. A moment ago, he had even been holding his breath.
Only after the woman disappeared did he start trembling and say, “Don’t think you’ve won. That thing just now was the Ghost Mother. Now that she’s gone, the Ghost Infant Tide is about to come!”
Just then, I heard a series of crackling, slapping sounds outside the car, as if countless tiny hands were crawling up onto my hood.
I stared at Liu Wu’s deathly pale face. “You used that willow branch just now to make me your stand-in, didn’t you?”
Liu Wu pressed his lips together and stammered, “You brought this on yourself! If you’d listened to me and gone to Ruihe, you never would’ve run into the Ghost Mother on the road!”
“Fine.” I nodded. By then, my car could barely move.
I reached under the seat and pulled out a plastic bottle.
It was a little disgusting to say, but the bottle wasn’t filled with anything else. It was filled with urine.
This was something Master had taught me back then. It couldn’t be fresh urine, either. It had to be urine that had been left to settle.
I grabbed Liu Wu, opened the plastic bottle, and poured it right over his head.
Liu Wu didn’t have time to struggle before I drenched him from head to face.
Before he could react, I opened the car door on his side and kicked him out.
Didn’t he love using other people as stand-ins? This time, I’d let him be one to his heart’s content.
The moment Liu Wu got out of the car, the weight on my vehicle suddenly lifted.
I slammed my foot on the gas. While Liu Wu became the Ghost Infants’ target, I had to get to Yueshan Cemetery as soon as possible!
But after all my calculations, when I was just a little short of my destination, the car actually ran out of gas!
I had clearly filled the tank before setting out. I had no time to think too much about it. Just then, I saw a gas station up ahead.
I drove in, but no one came out for a long time.
I had no choice but to get out and look for someone.
The person inside the gas station seemed to be asleep. Maybe he hadn’t expected anyone to come here for gas at midnight on the Ghost Festival.
I knocked on the door for a good while before I finally woke the person inside.
A young man came out. When he heard how anxious I was, he finally quickened his pace and filled up my tank.
“Where are you headed this late?”
The night seemed a little chilly. The young man rubbed the goose bumps on his arms and struck up a conversation with me.
“Yueshan Cemetery,” I answered while looking around.
The young man immediately wore an expression that said he never should have asked. After he finished filling the tank and printed the receipt, he was just about to hand it to me when his voice suddenly began to tremble. “Sir, why is your windshield covered in children’s handprints?”
I shook my head and didn’t answer him. I simply took the receipt and was about to leave.
But just as I turned to get back into the car, I heard the young man say, “Don’t go. You can’t leave anymore.”
The foot I was about to place on the step froze in midair.
I couldn’t move!
More accurately, the entire left side of my body couldn’t move.
Just then, a gust of night wind blew through. In an instant, everything around me turned dilapidated and ruined.
How was this a gas station at all? It was nothing but a stretch of wasteland!
No wonder. My tank had clearly been full, so how could I have suddenly run out of gas?

On the day the Ghost Gate Opens, those of us who drove long-haul trucks knew better than to travel at night.
But that night, I was driving alone down the road to an old public cemetery.
