Chapter 20
Chapter 20
The full moon in the sky had drifted behind me, casting my shadow out in front.
I could clearly see something writhing on my left shoulder. Then it slowly stretched out, taking shape as a head.
I heard the young man’s breathing. It was right beside my ear.
Then my left hand slowly rose and clamped around my throat.
Memories that didn’t belong to me were forcing their way into my mind.
I saw a person standing in front of a mirror, tubes sticking out all over his body. Inside his head, he kept screaming, I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die-
That obsession clung to him like maggots burrowing into bone, warping even the reflection in the mirror.
Gradually, I couldn’t breathe. The muscles in my left arm began to swell.
I watched the extra head in my shadow desperately trying to squeeze its way into my body.
Waves of nausea rolled through me. The man’s crazed thoughts ate into my mind, shrieking for my body to give up resisting.
This couldn’t go on!
I braced my right hand against the car door and aimed my left shoulder at the doorframe.
The instant the moon overhead was covered by clouds, I slammed myself hard into the doorframe.
There was a heavy, muffled thud. The hand around my neck immediately went limp-
I dislocated my left arm against the direction of the joint.
The moment I could breathe again, I regained control of my body.
I pulled out the Soul-Whip and jammed it viciously into the head on my left shoulder.
The young man was violently thrown out of my body. I turned and lashed him again.
By then, the red line on the horizon was gradually fading, with a faint purple glow showing through.
I smelled rain in the air. The full moon was hidden behind the clouds, and lightning flashed.
Three sharp cracks rang out as I lashed the whip, scattering the Ghost Infant entities clinging to the car.
Then I climbed into the car, floored the gas, and drove off.
This time, I finally made it to Yueshan Cemetery without incident.
I’d originally thought that, with it being the Ghost Festival, the cemetery might be even harder to get through than the roads outside.
But I found Feng Shan’s tombstone without running into anything else along the way.
It seemed Feng Shan’s mother hadn’t lied to me. She had made arrangements here long ago.
I took the seven bedside cards from the seven cribs.
Before I flicked the lighter, I touched my little sister’s name one last time.
Flame flared. In that tiny point of light, I looked at the photo on Feng Shan’s tombstone. The person in the photo seemed to be looking back at me.
“You’d better hope I don’t run into you down below.”
I spoke each word slowly and clearly.
I scattered the last bit of ash in front of Feng Shan’s grave.
I believe that, in the end, every deed has its reckoning. Even if Feng Shan reincarnates in her next life, she will still owe those seven children a life.
The Ghost Festival was finally over. I went to Ruihe again.
Xiao Hang’s father had gone to see him, and Xiao Hang was beside himself with excitement.
I also made some indirect inquiries. Mr. Chen’s wife had been taken into the operating room last night. In the end, the baby didn’t make it.
Mr. Chen was a little disappointed, but his wife wasn’t too grief-stricken.
Not long after she came out of surgery, she was already worrying about the treatment plans for those children.
As for Peng You, he had no idea whether his order counted as completed or not. In any case, no one came to him demanding a penalty for breach of contract.
I asked Peng You how Liu Wu had found him.
From what Liu Wu had said, he hadn’t expected to run into me again because of this job either.
Could it really have been a coincidence?
But Peng You told me that the person who had approached him wasn’t Liu Wu. It was a man surnamed Chang.
That man had given him Liu Wu’s business card and said there was a job available at an extremely high price. The only problem was the date-it fell on the Ghost Festival.
Peng You hadn’t thought much of it at the time. He figured that since he could hire me, even the Ghost Festival wouldn’t be a problem, so he called Liu Wu.
Liu Wu had apparently sounded a little surprised, saying their information channels were pretty sharp.
I asked Peng You to help me look for this man surnamed Chang. He didn’t seem to be one of Liu Wu’s people; otherwise, Liu Wu wouldn’t have been surprised.
Peng You said the man had left a business card back then, but after searching all over the company, he simply couldn’t find it.
In the end, I had no choice but to let it go.
I didn’t know what happened to Liu Wu afterward, but I guessed he probably wouldn’t die.
Sure enough, a few days later, I received a message from Liu Wu.
-Feng Shan’s daughter, Feng Yingjun.
Address: Building Seven, Wutong Residential Area, Four-and-a-Half Blind Physical Therapy Clinic.

On the day the Ghost Gate Opens, those of us who drove long-haul trucks knew better than to travel at night.
But that night, I was driving alone down the road to an old public cemetery.
