Chapter 17
Chapter 17
“Stop the truck! Now! You’re trying to get yourself killed!” Liu Wu snarled at me.
I let out a cold laugh. The road leading to Yueshan Cemetery wasn’t exactly wide.
The SUVs behind us had tried several times to overtake me and cut me off, but I kept blocking them.
Up ahead, the road curved on a slant. I positioned the truck to block the view of the vehicles behind me.
Sure enough, I heard the roar of engines closing in again.
The instant I entered the curve, I wrenched the steering wheel hard. The heavy truck’s tilting body became like a blade laid across the road.
Liu Wu, sitting in the passenger seat, didn’t manage to grab the handle in time and nearly got flung out of his seat.
A string of crashes rang out behind us.
By the time he turned back around, all he could see was a cloud of smoke billowing up and the overturned bodies of the vehicles.
“Your cars have insurance, right?”
I glanced at the silent Liu Wu, straightened the wheel, and kept driving.
The closer we got to Yueshan, the fewer willow trees there were along the road.
The last few sparks on Liu Wu’s piece of wood flickered and then went out completely.
Liu Wu gritted his teeth and said, “The Life-Soul Seizing Art is practically the same as bringing someone back from the dead. Do you have any idea how many evil things that will attract? Even if only a tiny bit of its power remains, we’re no different from Tang Monk’s flesh sitting on a chopping block!”
I had no intention of responding to Liu Wu. I focused entirely on the road ahead.
Liu Wu turned toward me and snapped, “Long Changdong, you think you can still survive this with only the fire energy left in your body? Don’t forget, Zuo Hao extinguished the yang fire on your left shoulder!”
“You should worry about yourself first,” I said coldly.
At that moment, beyond the guardrails on both sides of the road, strange crooked shadows were drawing closer to us.
Liu Wu unconsciously tightened his grip on the handle by the door, his voice pressed low in his throat. “I have my own ways to stay alive. I just hope you don’t regret this.”
Just then, a black shadow suddenly lunged onto the road.
I didn’t brake. I slammed straight into it.
The front of the truck gave a heavy thud. There was clearly nothing in the rearview mirror, but it felt as if we’d just hit something.
I didn’t feel much of anything, but Liu Wu suddenly began to convulse.
His whole body spasmed, his hands and feet twisting as the temperature in the cab plummeted.
I breathed out a puff of icy air, and the thing clinging to Liu Wu began to reveal itself.
It looked like a deformed human, with a huge tumor growing from its neck.
The horrifying part was that the tumor had a huge mouth split open across it, and it was sucking fiercely at Liu Wu’s face.
I pulled out the Soul-Whip and lashed it across the thing, making it shriek.
The monster turned its face toward me, giving Liu Wu a moment to breathe.
He muttered something under his breath, and a burst of fire suddenly flared from his chest.
The thing was caught in the firelight, and its body ignited as if set ablaze. In the blink of an eye, it vanished completely.
Liu Wu broke into a fit of coughing. The wooden pendant hanging on his chest had already burned to ash.

Soul-Whip 11: Life-Soul Seizing Art
On the day the Ghost Gate Opens, those of us who drove long-haul trucks knew better than to travel at night.
But that night, I was driving alone down the road to an old public cemetery.
