Chapter 8
I thought my parents would give me a harsh scolding when they found out about the divorce.
To my surprise, neither of them said a word against me.
After hearing the whole story, my mom’s eyes welled up with tears. Trembling with rage, she cursed Su Kai for being a lowlife while simultaneously trying to comfort me.
“It’s good that you’re back, baby. This divorce is a blessing. That kind of man was never good enough for our Shushu. Listen to me-just focus on being happy from now on. The best is yet to come.”
I collapsed into my mother’s arms and sobbed.
For three years, I had held in so much grievance with no one to talk to. In that moment, it all surged forth like a tidal wave, finally finding a release.
My father sat to the side, silent.
Perhaps, when he had tried so hard to stop me back then, he had already foreseen this outcome.
That night, I slept in my old bedroom. Everything inside remained unchanged; the walls were still covered with my old awards and photos.
My mom told me that she and my dad cleaned it every single day.
“Your father is all bark and no bite. Even though he said he was cutting ties with you in a fit of pique back then, he’s the one who’s been polishing your trophies most often,” my mom said as she sat by my bed. “You’re just like him-stubborn and headstrong. That’s exactly why he was so afraid you’d end up getting hurt.”
I nodded, my eyes stinging again.
“Get some sleep,” my mom said, patting my forehead.
I closed my eyes. She turned off the light, stood up, and walked out.
“Oh! You scared the life out of me,” her voice drifted in from the hallway. “What are you doing standing here?”
“Is she asleep?”
“Not yet, but soon.”
“She’s been crying all day, and you didn’t even help her soothe her eyes,” my father’s voice carried through the door. “Once she’s asleep, use a warm egg to roll over her eyes, otherwise they’ll be painful tomorrow.”
I rolled over, and tears fell once more.
That night, I had the best sleep I’d had in a very long time.
The next day, I cut off my waist-length hair, dyed it a deep brown, and got a perm in a pear-blossom style.
The hair stylist kept exclaiming that it was a shame to throw away such healthy hair and asked if I wanted to sell it.
I shook my head and told him to just toss it.
I used to keep it long because Su Kai liked it.
He always told me I looked best with long, straight black hair, telling me never to cut or dye it.
But now, I only wanted to please myself and start over.
My degree was in primary school English education, but when I inquired at several local schools, none had vacancies or hiring plans.
Fortunately, an older girl from next door was moving abroad. Her current company was in desperate need of an English clerk, so she recommended me.
And so, I started working there.
It was a private foreign trade enterprise with many branches across the country. I was stationed at one of those branch offices.
The atmosphere was great, and my colleagues were friendly. The company regularly organized recreational activities and even had a long-term program to support a nearby mountain primary school. These were all things I was interested in and good at.
For three months, I was genuinely happy at this company.
But then, the old General Manager was hospitalized due to a sudden illness. After being discharged, he retired for health reasons, and the company hired a new General Manager.
I never imagined I would cross paths with Su Kai again so soon.
And what’s more, he was the new General Manager of my company.
