Chapter 2
Chapter 2
And so, Su Kai and I became a couple.
He was a wonderful boyfriend.
We were together for three years during university, and we had originally planned to stay and build a life together in the city where our school was located after graduation.
However, he unexpectedly received an offer from a well-known company in his hometown.
He never really wanted to be a teacher, and this was the dream job offer he had always wanted.
After much deliberation, he took my hand and asked if I would go back to his hometown with him.
Su Kai’s hometown was very far from mine. There was no direct high-speed rail; it took over twenty hours by train to get there.
My parents were vehemently opposed to me following him back. My father even got into several heated arguments with me over it.
My mother tried her best to persuade me over the phone, her voice full of concern. “Sweetheart, we don’t want you to marry someone so far away because we don’t have a single soul over there. If you get bullied, what will you do? Who will be there to back you up? You won’t even have a place to go…”
But at the time, I was too in love with Su Kai to listen to reason.
I told my mother that Su Kai would never let anyone bully me.
But in the end, the person who bullied me the most was him.
It was as if I were blinded by infatuation. Even after my father went as far as saying, “If you marry into that family, don’t ever come back to this house,” I remained resolute. After graduation, I followed Su Kai to his hometown.
Su Kai was there to meet me when the train arrived at the station.
It was a snowy night.
Bundled in a thick down jacket, I threw myself into Su Kai’s arms, my eyes brimming with tears as I told him I had arrived.
His eyes grew red as well, and he held my face, kissing me frantically.
“Su Kai,” I whispered that night, nestled in his arms. “My parents are so angry. Dad said he’d disown me if I left. I only have you now.”
He held me tightly.
He said, “Shushu, let’s get married.”
“I’ll treat you well for the rest of my life.”
And so, Su Kai and I got married.
After the wedding, I worked as an English teacher at an elementary school while Su Kai worked at his company.
In the beginning, things were indeed sweet and happy.
Like any newlywed couple, we cooked together, watched movies together, and shared the housework.
My father was still angry with me and didn’t even attend the wedding.
Though I was sad, I was so immersed in the sweetness of my new marriage at the time that I unconsciously overlooked many things.
I kept thinking that when we had a long break, I would take Su Kai back home to have a proper talk with my father. I’d let him give my father his word, and then my father would surely stop being angry.
However, Su Kai became busier and busier. Not only did he have to work overtime on weeknights, but he was often called in on weekends and holidays as well.
My heart ached for him, and I told him not to push himself so hard, but he just pulled me into his arms and said he had to work hard.
“I want to show your father that your choice wasn’t wrong, Shushu. I’m going to give you a life that everyone will envy.”
