Chapter 1

The news of the new General Manager’s arrival spread like wildfire today, and the entire office was buzzing with gossip.

“It’s rare for us to get such a young manager.”

“Look at his photo, he’s so handsome…”

“Wait?” Xiao Zheng from the next desk leaned over, staring at Su Kai’s profile picture on the company intranet on my computer. “You think this new General Manager-who isn’t even thirty yet-is married?”

“He was, then he got divorced.”

“Huh?”

I closed the page and said calmly, “But he has a girlfriend. They might be getting married soon, or maybe they’ve already remarried.”

Xiao Zheng was stunned. “How do you know that?”

I shook my head and smiled. “Just a guess. I’m good at reading faces.”

Actually, it wasn’t a guess.

Everything I said was true.

Because Su Kai’s ex-wife was me.

Su Kai and I could probably be considered a textbook example of a golden couple turned bitter exes.

We were alumni of the same normal university. He was one year ahead of me, making him my senior.

Some people are born to be the center of attention wherever they go, making it impossible not to stare at them. Su Kai was one of those people.

If we’re being honest, I was the one who had a crush on him first.

But there were far too many girls who liked Su Kai. Back then, I lacked confidence, so I simply worshipped him in my heart like an “idol,” never daring to confess.

Of course, I was also afraid of being rejected. I was even more afraid that if he turned me down, we wouldn’t even be able to remain friends.

That changed during the summer break of that year when we went to a mountainous region together for a volunteer teaching program. The accommodations in the mountains weren’t great. One night, the roof of my room started leaking. The lead teacher took me to an empty classroom and told me to wait there until the roof was fixed.

When I arrived, I found that someone was already in the classroom.

It was Su Kai.

He had likely been brought there by a teacher to take temporary shelter from the rain as well. Whether it was because he was too exhausted or for some other reason, he had actually fallen asleep, slumped over one of the small school desks.

I quietly pulled out the chair next to him and watched him sleep. My heart was pounding against my ribs.

The lights were off, and the rain was drumming against the roof outside. In a moment of reckless courage, a thought flashed through my mind.

I slowly leaned in toward his face.

At the very moment our noses were about to touch, a sudden crack of thunder roared outside.

My senses came rushing back, snapped awake by the thunder. Mocking myself for being blinded by his looks, I tried to sit back up, but a firm hand suddenly pressed down on the back of my head.

Su Kai slowly opened his eyes. Looking at my panicked face, he spoke in a leisurely tone.

“Lu Shu, just now…”

“What were you trying to do?”

“I wasn’t trying to do anything! I didn’t want to do anything at all!” Caught red-handed, my face turned bright red instantly. I struggled, trying to get him to let me go.

But he didn’t. He just looked at me with a slight curve in his eyes and, suddenly, leaned in and kissed me.

I was stunned, even forgetting to struggle.

It was a very, very light kiss.

“But I wanted to,” he said.
