Chapter 6

“You…” Before he could get the word out, the scene before him rooted him to the spot.

Pei Yuming saw his wife, the woman he loved most in this life, wrapped in an intimate embrace with his best friend, Lu Dong. The two were glued together, kissing so passionately that it took them quite a while to notice there was a living, breathing person standing outside the door.

“H-Husband…” Bai Xue looked at him in terror. When she said it, her hands had not even left Lu Dong’s neck. Under the circumstances, it was impossible to tell which man she was calling.

In an instant, Pei Yuming felt all the blood in his body rush to his head. His eyes went scarlet. He yanked the door open with force, then slammed it shut behind him, trapping the two of them completely inside.

Seeing that he was about to explode, Lu Dong hurriedly tried to talk him down. “Lao Pei, calm down. Let me explain!”

Pei Yuming had no idea what there was left to explain in a situation like this. He stepped forward and grabbed Lu Dong by the collar of his shirt. In his extreme rage, he erupted with far more strength than usual, nearly lifting the refined, slender Lu Dong clean off the ground as he roared, “Explain what?! What is there to explain? Huh? Say it!”

Bai Xue saw Lu Dong’s face turn bright red from being choked, unable to get a word out, and hurried over to pull at Pei Yuming, afraid he might accidentally strangle Lu Dong to death and turn this into a murder.

But Pei Yuming immediately took her tugging as her helping Lu Dong. His fury surged to another level. With almost no effort, he flung Bai Xue aside, then drove a heavy punch straight into Lu Dong’s face.

With a dull thud, Lu Dong fell to the floor. As luck would have it, the back of his head struck the edge of the tempered-glass coffee table in the living room. His eyes rolled back on the spot, and only after several seconds did he slowly crawl up into a sitting position.

“Pei Yuming! Are you insane?” Bai Xue was terrified. She screamed and rushed over to help Lu Dong. In that short span of time, a pool of blood had already formed on the floor.

As a doctor, Pei Yuming could of course tell that Lu Dong’s injury was serious. But right now, he was not a doctor who healed the sick and saved lives. He was a man betrayed by both his wife and his longtime friend. Especially when he saw that pool of blood, a bloodthirsty glint flashed through his bloodshot eyes.

In a rage, he rushed to the nearby kitchen and snatched up the boning knife Bai Xue had left on the counter. Pointing the tip at the two people on the floor, he shouted in agitation, “Tell me! Why would you do this to me? Why?!”

That sort of question was destined to have no answer.

Just as the three people inside were locked in a stalemate, a knock suddenly sounded at the door. Then Su Jin’s concerned voice came from outside. “Bai Xue? Yuming? Are you all right?”

At the sound of Su Jin’s voice, Pei Yuming briefly came back to his senses. Bai Xue seized the chance to slip to the entryway, open the door, and sob to Su Jin for help.

Su Jin stepped inside and glanced at Lu Dong lying on the living room floor, then at Pei Yuming, who was pointing a knife at her husband. Her expression was rather complicated. She walked over cautiously and coaxed him in a gentle voice. “Yuming, put the knife down first.”

Every muscle in Pei Yuming’s face was twitching. It was obvious he was doing everything he could to restrain himself from stepping forward and stabbing Lu Dong to death. Aggrieved, he said to Su Jin, “Su Jin, if you knew what these two did behind my back, you wouldn’t be trying to stop me.”

Su Jin looked at the sharp tip of the knife and swallowed nervously. “Yuming, don’t be rash. No matter what they did, you can’t stab someone to death right now. Think about Xiaobei. Think about your father. If something happens to you, what will they do?”

“I… I…” Pei Yuming clenched his teeth, rage twisting his whole face out of shape. “He’s going to die anyway. I might as well give him a clean end!”

While the two of them were negotiating, Bai Xue had already helped the extremely weak Lu Dong to his feet. From the look of it, she meant to take him outside.

“Stop right there!” Pei Yuming shoved Su Jin aside and moved to block Bai Xue and Lu Dong. “Until this is explained, nobody leaves this house today!”

“Don’t!” Su Jin came over as well and grabbed Pei Yuming. “Yuming, calm down. Let Xiao Xue take Lu Dong to the hospital first. We can talk about everything once he’s all right.”

“No! Today, right here, this has to be made clear!” Pei Yuming shoved Su Jin to the floor, rushed to the doorway, and lunged at Bai Xue and Lu Dong.

Bai Xue was scared out of her wits by Pei Yuming’s murderous appearance as he came at them with a knife, but her body still instinctively moved to shield Lu Dong from him.

Seeing that she was still protecting Lu Dong even now, the last shred of reason in Pei Yuming’s mind was finally burned away by fury. The sharp blade pierced skin and heart more easily than he had imagined. By the time Pei Yuming came back to himself, Bai Xue had already fallen, clutching her chest. Her beautiful, bright eyes were filled with disbelief.

“I…” Pei Yuming trembled all over as he backed away. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…”

“What do you mean, you didn’t mean to?” Cao Lei frowned at his incoherent rambling.
