Chapter 11

This was probably the calmest Flashback yet. As soon as Pei Yuming returned to the subway, he checked his watch. 3:05 p.m. If nothing unexpected happened, he could stay here for four hours, just like last time, and be sent back at 7:05.

He turned and moved toward the doors without hesitation. When the train arrived at the next stop, he got off one stop early, leaving the argument in the carriage completely behind him.

He walked silently along the road, thinking over everything that had happened that night. Officer Cao’s words had reminded him that he could not keep letting his emotions drag him around by the nose. Since he had been given the chance to return to before the incident, why not investigate it himself?

If he actually found something, he could provide the police with a few leads. That might also help clear him of suspicion.

Besides, he had no idea how many more Flashbacks like this he would experience. But now that it had happened, he had no choice but to accept it.

As for Bai Xue and Lu Dong, he had to admit that even now, he still could not accept it.

Why Lu Dong?

All these years, outsiders might have thought he and Lu Dong were close friends, but only Pei Yuming knew the truth. If his junior colleague Su Jin had not married Lu Dong, he would never have deigned to have anything to do with a man like him.

He had never met anyone as good at scheming and opportunism as Lu Dong. The man had no real ability, yet he loved to brag. He carried the title of director at a private dental hospital, but in reality, he could not even handle an ordinary minor surgery properly. The only reason he had made it this far was because he had climbed up through Su Jin and her family’s connections. Otherwise, with his skills, he would not even have managed to become an operating surgeon at a hospital.

And yet Bai Xue had betrayed him for a hypocritical, arrogant man like that, someone impressive on the outside and hollow within. He truly could not accept it.

The more Pei Yuming thought about it, the worse he felt. Even now, the two of them were fooling around in his home. At that thought, Pei Yuming clenched his fists, and that uncontrollable fury surged up from the bottom of his heart again.

He took a deep breath, slapped his own face twice, and forced himself to calm down.

He remembered Officer Cao saying that no one had gone upstairs before the incident. To the police, as the sole survivor, he was naturally the most suspicious.

But Pei Yuming knew he was innocent. So he could be certain of one thing: the person who had poisoned them had to be one of the seven.

But how was he supposed to figure out who it was?

Pei Yuming thought of the evidence bag Officer Cao had shown him earlier. The small bottle of vitamins found in his bedroom had probably been brought there by the killer. If he waited until everyone arrived and searched them one by one, wouldn’t he be able to identify the killer very quickly?

At that thought, Pei Yuming grew a little excited. If he found the poison, what would happen? Would tonight’s tragedy no longer take place? Would everyone be safe and sound?

Would he still return to the interrogation room?

If he did not go back, what about Bai Xue and Lu Dong?

Was he really supposed to get a divorce and let her be with Lu Dong?

Pei Yuming was in agony. He could not understand why something like this had happened to him.

He believed he had treated Bai Xue well all these years. Throughout their marriage, his salary card had always been in Bai Xue’s hands. He did not even know how much savings they had at home. Before this, he had never once imagined she would cheat on him.

But in the end, Bai Xue had actually joined forces with someone like Lu Dong to deceive him!

When Pei Yuming got home, Su Jin and Lu Dong had already arrived. The moment he entered, he saw Lu Dong sitting on the sofa, holding a book and pretending to flip through it. It was the professional book Pei Yuming had been reading while resting in the living room last night.

“Yuming, you’re back?” Su Jin came out carrying a plate of sliced braised beef in soy sauce and happened to see him.

“Mm.” Pei Yuming answered in a muffled voice.

After changing his shoes and stepping inside, he had not intended to pay Lu Dong any attention, but Lu Dong stood up and came over. “Lao Pei, you’re already a chief physician, and you’re still studying this hard? Leave some opportunities for the younger generation, will you?”

Pei Yuming did not respond to the compliment. He snatched the book straight out of Lu Dong’s hands and said mockingly, “Can you even understand it? Why are you flipping through it?”
